Getting Your First Kentucky Driver's License After 18
This page is for an adult in Kentucky getting a license for the first time, or a new resident wondering whether they must test. The main choice up front is standard card or REAL ID, since it changes what you bring. After that the route is fixed: clear the trooper-run knowledge and eye exams, wait on the permit (half a year at 18 to 20, a month from 21), pass a KSP road test, and collect the card from a cabinet Regional Office. You owe no course. Movers with a valid license usually switch within 30 days without any testing.

Step by step
Choose standard or REAL ID
Pick REAL ID if your license will get you onto domestic flights or into federal buildings. It needs two residency documents rather than one.
Pass the State Police knowledge and eye tests
Book online with KSP, bring your papers and score at least 80 percent. The permit is issued at a Regional Office: $15, or $18 if you want the REAL ID version.
Put in the permit time
Drive with a licensed adult 21 or older in the passenger seat for 180 days at ages 18 to 20, or 30 days from age 21.
Take the road test
Book the KSP skills test, show up with a licensed companion and a car that has current registration and insurance, then get through the inspection and the route.
Pick up the license
At a Regional Office, choose a four or eight year term and pay. You leave with a paper temporary license, and the card follows by mail.
Before you apply: which license you are getting
A new adult driver applies for a Class D operator's license, which covers ordinary cars and trucks. Riding a motorcycle takes a separate Class M license or endorsement. A moped can be ridden on a car permit or license. Commercial vehicles require a CDL, and the State Police run those tests too.
Restrictions, like needing glasses or an interlock device, print on the card, and REAL ID versions show a star. A card without the star is still a perfectly valid driving license.
Your document folder
Pack a certified birth certificate or passport to prove identity, the Social Security card, and a residency document no older than a year. REAL ID takes two residency documents, and a name change must be backed by marriage, divorce or court records.
Noncitizens use the separate application process in KRS 186.4121, bring immigration paperwork, and pay $30 more under the fee statute. No office accepts a photocopy of anything, so bring originals or certified copies.
Booking and test day
The State Police give every knowledge, eye and road test; the Transportation Cabinet prints the card. Expect two stops, a KSP testing area and a cabinet Regional Office, often under one roof.
KSP releases appointments at 8 a.m. on weekdays through its scheduler, and any regional site is open to you. Interpreters are welcome at the counter but not in the car during the drive.
Here is a realistic timeline for a 24 year old. Knowledge test and permit in early March, 30 days of evening practice, a road test booked for mid April, and the plastic card in the mailbox a few weeks later.
Getting the car ready
Bring registration and proof of coverage: your insurer's card, the policy, or a binder your agent wrote. Rentals qualify only with your name on the agreement. Paper temporary tags are acceptable when they belong to that car and have not expired.
The examiner looks at brakes, lights, horn, mirrors, wipers, signals, the muffler and seat belts. Heavy tint, aftermarket strobe lights, a broken or obstructed windshield, or junk on the passenger seat can each disqualify the car, so go over it the day before.
What it costs, as of October 2026
KRS 186.531 sets the price. Eight years costs $43 ($48 with the star). Four years costs half: $21.50 ($24 with the star). If you are younger than 21, the card runs at most four years and costs $15, or $18 for REAL ID.
The permit costs $15 or $18. Regional offices take credit and debit cards, cash and checks.
If you are moving here from another state
Kentucky gives you 30 days after becoming a resident to get its license. A license that is current, or lapsed under a year, means no testing at all. Hand in the old card at a Regional Office along with identity, Social Security and address documents.
Lapsed longer than that? Request a certified history or clearance letter from your former state, no more than a month old, then take the knowledge and vision exams. Lost a card that has not expired? The letter and an eye check will do. College students who are U.S. citizens, at any course load, may simply keep their valid home state license and carry a student ID.
If your license is from another country
Kentucky waives testing under KRS 186.480 only for licenses from states that would do the same for Kentuckians. A foreign license generally does not qualify, so plan on the eye, written and road tests.
The cabinet's page for non-U.S. citizens lists the immigration documents it takes. With a foreign license, phone Driver Licensing (502-564-1257) ahead of your trip, since the rules can turn on your status.
Kentucky adult drivers ed: common questions
I am 21 and have never driven. What are my steps?
Knowledge and eye tests with the troopers, then the permit. A month of practice next to a licensed adult of at least 21. Then the road test, and finally the card from a Regional Office.
What does a Kentucky license cost?
In October 2026: eight years is $43 ($48 REAL ID); four years is $21.50 ($24 REAL ID). Under 21, it is $15 or $18 for up to four years.
Is REAL ID required in Kentucky?
Only to use your license for domestic flights or certain federal sites. A passport works instead, and a standard card is fine for driving.
How long do I have to switch after moving?
Thirty days from establishing residence. Your vehicle has a separate deadline with the County Clerk, so check registration rules too.
Will I take a road test after moving to Kentucky?
No, provided your old U.S. license is current or lapsed less than twelve months. If it lapsed longer, you need a clearance letter plus the written and eye tests.
Can I drive myself to the road test?
No. A permit holder always needs a licensed adult of at least 21 riding up front, including on the trip to the test site. Arrive alone and the test is rescheduled.
Can an interpreter help me during the road test?
Not in the car. An interpreter may help before and after the drive, but cannot ride along.
