Your First Kansas Driver's License as an Adult

This page is for a Kansas adult who has never held a license, and who wants a clear checklist rather than a teen guide. The one decision worth making up front is whether to get REAL ID on the first visit. After that, the route is short: a permit once you pass the eye and knowledge tests, practice beside a licensed driver who is 21 or older, then a road test in a car you bring. You owe no course and no waiting period from 17 on. Expect $29 for a new Class C license with testing if you are between 21 and 64.

Step by step

  1. Decide on the gold star

Choose whether you want REAL ID now. Doing it on the first visit avoids a second trip and the $8 fee to add it later.

  2. Bring originals only

Pack your identity and lawful presence document, your Social Security document and two Kansas address documents. A license from another state works only as a backup ID.

  3. Get through the first two tests

Pass the eye screening and the 25 question exam, in person or online through KnowToDrive if eligible. The $10 permit follows.

  4. Put in the practice

Ride with a licensed adult 21 or older, with a year or more of experience, next to you. If you have nobody, book lessons at an approved school.

  5. Check the test car

Make sure signals, brake lights, horn, tires, mirrors, the tag and the heat or A/C pass the handbook list. Carry the insurance card.

  6. Drive the exam and pay

Finish the safety check, the control skills and the road drive, then pay. The card arrives by mail.

Before you book: do you qualify?

The handbook's basic conditions are straightforward. Prove your name, age and address, pass the required exams, hand over any other license or ID card, show lawful presence and meet the medical standard. You also must not owe unpaid moving violation fines or have a license that is suspended, revoked, denied or cancelled in any state.

Settle old tickets first. One unpaid citation from another state can block your application, and KDOR will not write a clearance letter while your own Kansas privileges are restricted or suspended.

Your document folder

A standard license needs three kinds of paper: one identity document from List A or B, one Social Security document from List D, and two address documents from List C. For REAL ID, bring a lawful presence document, a Social Security document, two address documents no older than a year, and records of any name change if your current name differs.

Photocopies and phone images are refused; originals or certified copies only. If your birth or marriage certificate is missing, order a certified replacement well before your appointment.

On test day: three parts in a row

With the knowledge test behind you, the driving portion runs in three stages: a pre-trip safety inspection of the car, a basic control skills section, and the drive itself. Bring your permit, your Kansas residency proof and a car that passes inspection.

The examiner grades individual maneuvers and your driving overall. You fail outright for driving unbelted, not checking blind spots, committing any moving violation, not yielding to a pedestrian, a collision you could have avoided, climbing a curb, or forcing the examiner to take over.

Say you have been practicing in an empty church lot on Sunday afternoons. Add at least a few weekday drives in real traffic before the test, because the route is on public streets and the examiner is watching how you handle other drivers.

What you will pay, by age

According to the fee chart marked updated May 2023, a new Class C license including testing costs $29 at ages 21 to 64 and $23 at 65 or older. Under 21, it is $31: $20 to issue, $3 for the test and $8 for the photo, and it runs out on your 21st birthday.

K.S.A. 8-247 sets expiration. If you are 21 to 64 when you apply, the license lasts until the sixth birthday anniversary closest to that date; at 65 or older, the fourth. Retesting inside six months costs $1.50, and what you already paid carries forward until you pass.

If you are new to Kansas

Plan to switch within 90 days of moving. A valid out-of-state license makes it easy: present identity and residency papers, pass the eye test and pay, with no knowledge or road exam.

An expired license means taking the eye, knowledge and road exams. Waiting beyond 150 days of residence adds a $1.00 penalty on the fee chart. KDOR also lists a reciprocity agreement under which holders of a valid South Korean license can transfer.

After you pass: mail, moves and renewals

Kansas sends the card by mail, so double-check the address on your record. State law gives you 10 days to report a new address, and an in-state change can be made online at no cost when you do not need a new card.

At least 30 days before expiration, KDOR mails a renewal notice. Renewing late costs a $1.00 penalty, and letting the license lapse for over a year puts you back through the eye, knowledge and road exams.

Kansas adult drivers ed: common questions

Do adults in Kansas still need a permit first?

Yes. You pass the eye and knowledge tests and get an instruction permit, but from 17 on there is no minimum time you must hold it.

What does a first adult license cost in Kansas?

On the fee chart marked updated May 2023, $29 including testing at 21 to 64 and $23 at 65 and up. The $10 permit is extra.

How many years is a Kansas license good for?

Six years if you are 21 to 64, four at 65 or older, and until your 21st birthday if you are younger. K.S.A. 8-247 sets these terms.

What papers do I need for REAL ID in Kansas?

A lawful presence document, a Social Security document, two Kansas address documents from the past year, and name change records if your name changed. Originals or certified copies only.

Is my old out-of-state license enough ID?

Only as a secondary document. It does not prove your legal name and birth date, so bring a birth certificate, passport or immigration document as well.

If I fail the road test, how soon can I retry?

The next working day, for $1.50. A fourth failure means waiting at least six months.

How do I update my address after I get the card?

Report it within 10 days. An in-state address change can be filed online for free if you do not need a new card printed.
