Kentucky Traffic School: From Ticket to Finished Class
This page is for a Kentucky driver holding a minor ticket who has heard traffic school can keep points away. Your decision is which door to try first: a county attorney program before your case is decided, or asking the judge for State Traffic School at your court date. Both can keep points off. State Traffic School is run by the Transportation Cabinet, and a District Court judge sentences you to it; finish, and no points are assessed. Many county attorneys run their own programs earlier in the case. Either way, you cannot just sign up online without a referral.

Step by step
Look over the citation
Find the court date and see whether the ticket can be prepaid. If you want traffic school, do not prepay, because payment is a conviction and brings points.
Phone the county attorney
Find out if your county has its own safety program, called CATS, and if your charge is eligible. These programs close the case before any finding of guilt.
If not, ask the judge
At your District Court date, request a State Traffic School sentence. The judge decides and sends the referral to the cabinet.
Watch the mailbox
Your sign-up instructions arrive by mail, sent to whatever address your license shows. If you have moved, update it within 10 days.
Enroll and finish on time
Take the $39 online class, or call 502-564-1257 to book a $15 classroom or Zoom seat, within 30 days. Then check your record.
First, what you are actually getting
KRS 186.574 makes State Traffic School a sentence a District Court can impose in place of other penalties. Pay the $15 fee, or $39 online, finish the class, and that sentence is your entire penalty apart from court costs. The cabinet assesses no points.
Do not mistake it for a dismissal. Employers and insurers, who mostly order the 3-year record, will not see the conviction there; judges and officers, using the longer record, will. Plan on paying the court costs on your case even though the fine is replaced.
Before court: do you qualify?
Two basics first: a valid license on the day of the stop, and a charge that does not automatically take your license. If you had no license, or yours was suspended or revoked when you were cited, you are ineligible. Impaired driving under KRS 189A.010 is never eligible.
One attendance per year is the cap, except for teens taking it as their Graduated Licensing course. When an ineligible driver is referred anyway, the cabinet sends the case back to the judge, who must choose another sentence.
- Kentucky license valid on the day of the ticket
- A minor violation with no mandatory suspension
- No State Traffic School in the last 12 months
- Not a DUI
- Out-of-state drivers only on a specific court order
The county attorney route (CATS)
Subsection (6) of KRS 186.574 allows a county attorney to divert a case into a safety class before any ruling. Each county prices its own class. On top of that, everyone pays the circuit clerk $25 and pays the county attorney $30 that stands in for court costs.
Not eligible: impaired driving, no insurance (KRS 304.39-080), commercial license holders, and anyone who would be turned away from State Traffic School. Because each county runs things its own way, ask the county attorney's office how your case is closed after you finish and whether you still have to appear in court.
After referral: online versus classroom
RightLane Kentucky Courses hosts the $39 online class, which you cannot start until the cabinet's enrollment letter arrives. You then have a month, counted from the referral or conviction, to complete it.
The classroom class lasts 4 hours, costs $15 and meets around the state, with a Zoom option. Seats in rural counties can be six weeks or more out, but you still must enroll inside the 30 days. One phone reschedule is allowed. A no-show triggers a suspension that lasts until you book again. Fees are not returned in either format.
Example: your court date is June 2 and the judge refers you that day. Book a seat by July 2, even if the first opening near you is in mid July.
If you do not finish
Once referred, you are under a court order to attend. The cabinet may refuse or suspend your license until you rebook or finish, and the judge can hold you in contempt.
The usual way drivers end up suspended is an outdated address on the license, so the enrollment letter never comes. Update your address within 10 days of moving, and if two weeks pass after court with no letter, phone 502-564-1257.
If you hold a CDL or an out-of-state license
Commercial drivers, and anyone cited while driving a commercial vehicle, may attend and keep points away, yet the conviction is posted regardless; federal masking rules (49 CFR 384.226) require it. County attorney programs are off limits to CDL holders.
A second federal rule, 49 CFR 383.31, requires CDL holders to report a moving conviction to their employer within 30 days. If your license is from elsewhere, the school is closed to you without an explicit order from the judge; check with your own state's licensing office about what the conviction will mean there.
Insurance and traffic school
The cabinet does not promise any insurance discount for State Traffic School, since it is a punishment ordered by a judge, not a class you choose. Call your insurer before assuming savings. Where it helps your rates is indirect: no points, and nothing on the 3-year record insurers usually check.
Kentucky's actual discount course is a separate program, the cabinet approved Over 55 Driver Improvement Course. Drivers 55 and up can take it voluntarily and ask their insurer how big a discount it earns.
Kentucky defensive driving: common questions
Will Kentucky traffic school dismiss my ticket?
No. It swaps out the penalty and blocks points, yet the conviction remains visible to courts and police. If your county has a CATS program, that can end the case before any conviction.
How do I get a referral?
Either the judge orders it as your sentence, or the county attorney admits you to the local program. Self-enrollment is not possible.
What does it cost?
In October 2026, the in-person or Zoom class is $15 and the online class is $39. Court costs are separate.
What is the deadline to finish?
You have one month from referral or conviction to sign up, and online students must also be done within that month.
Can I use it for a speeding ticket?
Usually, for ordinary speeding. Charges with a mandatory suspension are excluded, and the judge always decides.
I live in another state. Can I attend?
Only if a Kentucky court specifically orders it. Otherwise, your own state decides what the ticket means for your record.
Can I get a refund if I change my mind?
No. Neither the $15 classroom fee nor the $39 online fee is refundable.
