First-Time Adult Drivers in Montana: Getting Licensed
This page is for adults in Montana getting a first license, and for newcomers swapping in a license from elsewhere. The decision you face is simple: test now, or practice first on a learner permit. Either way there is no course and no waiting period. Take your identity, residency and lawful presence papers to an MVD exam station, get through the eye and written tests, and come back for the road test once you feel ready. On the October 2026 fee table, a standard card issued between ages 21 and 63 is $62.32 for 12 years, and anyone moving in should begin the switch inside 60 days.

Step by step
Pre-apply from home
The MVD has an online pre-apply form; filling it in beforehand shortens your time at the counter.
Book the written test
Choose any MVD station on the online scheduler, or phone Customer Care on 1 (406) 444-1772.
Pack your documents
Papers for identity, residency and lawful presence. Memorize your Social Security number.
Pass vision and written
Pass both and you walk out with a twelve month learner permit.
Practice until you are ready
Someone licensed sits beside you on every drive. There is no minimum for adults.
Take the road test and pay
Show the permit, registration and insurance, drive a car with nothing broken, and pay the fee once you pass.
Before you book: how the adult route works
At 18 and up, the MVD names three tests: vision, written and driving, and you cannot sit the driving test until the written one is passed. None of the teen requirements (traffic ed, a six month permit, logged hours) follow you.
You could skip the permit and test as soon as you feel capable, but most people find it useful. For up to a year it lets you drive anything but a motorcycle as long as a licensed driver is in the passenger seat. Read form 25-0100M, the Montana Driver Manual, before the written test.
Before you book: the document check
Identity takes two documents: two from the primary list, or one primary and one secondary. Primary choices include a birth certificate certified by a government office, a passport book or card, a military photo ID, or a photo license or ID card from the United States or Canada that expired four years ago or less. Secondary choices include the Social Security card, a certified copy of your marriage certificate, a health insurance card, or a court order stating your full legal name and birth date.
Lawful presence can be shown with the certified birth certificate, the passport, a naturalization or citizenship certificate, or a green card. Residency needs a document with the street address where you live in Montana, plus a mailing address or P.O. box if mail goes elsewhere.
The MVD runs your name and birth date against Social Security's file. If you changed your name at marriage and never told Social Security, sort that out first or the visit may stall.
Budgeting: fees as of October 2026
The price is built from how many years the card will be valid, so it moves with your age. Numbers below already include administrative costs; the figure in parentheses is the all-in price if you add REAL ID.
- You are 18 (card good until 21): standard $15.97, REAL ID total $41.72
- You are 19 (until 21): standard $10.82, REAL ID total $36.57
- You are 20 (until 21): standard $5.67, REAL ID total $31.42
- You are 21 through 63 (twelve years): standard $62.32, REAL ID total $67.47
- You are 75 or over (four years): standard $21.12, REAL ID total $46.87
- Lost or damaged card: $10.30 to replace
Deciding on REAL ID
With REAL ID you can fly domestically without a passport. It has its own checklist of documents, separate from the standard license list, so print the MVD's REAL ID checklist before you go.
A newer change: starting January 1, 2026, Montana law calls for an eagle on the licenses of U.S. citizens to show citizenship. You will see it on the MVD's redesigned card, which also uses a black and white portrait.
On road test day
Have three things ready: the learner permit, current registration for the test car, and proof of insurance (paper card or a screen on your phone). The examiner will also check the car itself. Glass must be free of cracks, and taillights, brake lights and blinkers all have to work.
You certify that the car represents the class of license you want. A passenger car covers a standard license; a motorcycle endorsement has separate tests.
If you moved here with a license
Montana treats you as a resident for licensing once you have lived here more than 60 days in a row, and the MVD wants your application started within 60 days of the move; CDL holders get only 30. Go in person and take a hard copy of your current out of state license, which is what lets you skip testing.
A license that is current, or lapsed by less than a year, converts to the same Montana class after an eye test and the fee. You will also need identity papers, a residency document showing a street address, lawful presence proof and your Social Security number. Where a health condition or worsening eyesight might affect driving, expect the MVD to request form 20-1900 (Driver Medical Evaluation) or form 22-1801 (Eye Evaluation).
Service members on active duty, and their spouses, can keep driving on a valid license from home while posted in Montana. Switching anyway but want the old card as ID? The MVD can stamp it for nondriving use only.
If your license is from Taiwan or Korea
Montana has reciprocity with Taiwan (in effect since October 10, 2020) and with the Republic of Korea (in effect since April 23, 2026). A valid license from either can be converted with no knowledge or driving test. Phone the MVD ahead of time to check the paperwork.
Montana adult drivers ed: common questions
Do I have to hold a permit before my road test as an adult?
There is no holding period. You do need to pass the written test first, and the permit lets you practice with a licensed driver beside you.
What will a 25 year old pay?
On the October 2026 table: $62.32 for a standard card valid twelve years, $67.47 if you want REAL ID.
Why is a license so cheap at 19?
Montana bills by the year and every card issued before 21 ends on that birthday. So at 19, the standard card is $10.82.
How soon must I switch my license after moving?
Begin within 60 days of moving (30 with a CDL), and take a hard copy of your current license to skip the tests.
Do I need to bring my Social Security card?
Not the card. Know the number, and check that Social Security has your current name and correct birth date.
What kind of car can I test in?
A car that is registered and insured, has uncracked glass and working lights and blinkers, and fits the license class you are after.
Can I keep my old state's card as ID?
The MVD can mark it valid for nondriving purposes only, so you can hold on to it for identification.
