Your First Oregon Driver License as an Adult
This page is for adults in Oregon, 18 or older, who have never held a license, and for newcomers converting one. Most people want to know how long it takes, and it can be quick. You need a pass on the 35 question written exam, a pass on the road test (or a course that excuses you from it), and a passed eye check at DMV. Classes are optional and you do not have to wait any set period. The October 2026 price for a first license valid 8 years is $64, rising to $94 if you choose REAL ID.

Step by step
Get the knowledge test out of the way
Do the written exam first, from home with a webcam or in an office. DMV will not schedule your road test until you have passed it.
Take a permit only if you need practice
Need practice on real roads? A Class C permit allows it with a licensed adult (21 or older) in the passenger seat. Confident drivers with a car to test in can skip straight ahead.
Reserve the drive test
Choose DMV ($45, booked online) or a Class C testing business. Either way, the car you bring needs valid registration, insurance and equipment that works.
Gather the papers
You need something proving identity and birth date, something proving an Oregon address, and your Social Security number. For REAL ID, follow the list on Form 7479.
Collect the license at DMV
At the counter you read the eye chart, turn in any license or ID card you already hold, pay, and pose for the photo. Watch the mailbox for the card in 5 to 10 days.
The adult path, start to finish
Turn 18 and the permit and the class both become optional in Oregon. There is no six month holding period and nothing to log, which is why an experienced but unlicensed driver can be done in a couple of weeks.
What slows people down is usually the car. The one you test in has to be currently registered and insured, and a permit holder may not drive alone, so you will need a licensed friend to get you and the car to the appointment.
A realistic timeline for a confident driver: knowledge test online on a Monday, a drive test booked for the following week, and the card in the mailbox about a week after that.
Before you go: documents and REAL ID
A regular card takes three proofs: your identity with a birth date (original or certified copy, since DMV turns away photocopies), a document putting you at an Oregon address, and a Social Security number if you were ever issued one.
Opting for REAL ID raises the bar. Form 7479 lists what you need: unexpired documents proving identity and lawful status, and two printed address documents that come from different sources. It is a $30 add-on and cannot be done online. Driving does not require it, but airport security has required it, or a passport, for domestic flights since May 2025.
On test day: what the examiner grades
Before you pull out, the examiner inspects the car; fail that check and the appointment may be over. On the road you are graded on turns, reversing, parking, changing lanes, managing speed, using signals and handling the car in general.
Did not pass? You may go again starting the next business day, paying again. Private Class C testers have their own fees and calendars, and passing with one of them still means a DMV visit to get the license printed.
If you take an approved course: skipping the drive test
The road test exemption teens get is open to adults too. Pass an ODOT-approved course, apply within 2 years, and DMV drops the road test. Schools have been sending those completions to DMV electronically since October 14, 2024.
What the course will not excuse: the written exam and the eye check. Because most approved programs are built for teenagers, ask the school directly whether an adult can join the approved course and not just buy lessons.
If you are moving to Oregon
Newcomers who want to drive have 30 days after becoming residents to switch to an Oregon license, and the same 30 days to title and register a vehicle. DMV considers you a visitor, not a resident, if you are here on military orders, pay out-of-state tuition, or keep permanent residence in another state.
Licenses from other U.S. states, territories and D.C., plus Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, normally convert with no tests if they are current or lapsed a year or less. A motorcycle endorsement carries over without testing only from a U.S. jurisdiction, Canada or Japan, and only if you ask for it.
At the counter: fees in October 2026
Here is the price list. Written exam, $7 each time. DMV road test, $45 each time. Class C permit, $30. First license good for 8 years, $64, or $94 with the $30 REAL ID upgrade. When it is time to renew, plan on $54, or $84 for REAL ID.
You pay for each test before you take it, and again for every retake. DMV also keeps test fees and the license fee as separate transactions. Should your license ever be suspended, getting it back costs $85, so a careful first few years saves money too.
Oregon adult drivers ed: common questions
Do I need a permit before the drive test as an adult?
No. A permit only matters if you want to practice on public roads before testing. Passing the written exam does have to come before booking the road test.
What does the first license cost?
In October 2026: $64 for 8 years, or $94 for a REAL ID. Each written attempt is $7 and each DMV road test attempt is $45.
Can I convert a license from another country?
Licenses from Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan transfer like U.S. ones, usually without tests. Others mean taking Oregon's knowledge and drive tests.
Can a private business give my drive test?
Yes. A Class C testing business can test you, and then you visit DMV to have the license issued.
How soon can I retake a failed drive test?
On the next business day at the earliest, paying the fee again. Rebook through DMV online or through a testing business.
Will I skip the drive test as a new resident?
In most cases. Turn in your old license, and if it is still valid or lapsed within the last year, the tests are normally waived.
Can I drive myself to the drive test on a permit?
No. A permit holder must have a licensed driver 21 or older beside them, so bring one along.
