Georgia · Getting Your First License as an Adult
Your First Georgia Driver's License at 18 or Older
This page is for adults in Georgia who have never been licensed, and for new residents. The common question is whether a course is required. It is not. The path runs: online form, document check, eye exam, two short written tests, learner's permit, practice, road test, Class C. In October 2026 that license was $32 and good for 8 years. Moving here with a license from another state? You get 30 days to switch.

Step by step
File the online form
DDS needs the License/ID/Permit Form on file before you show up. It expires after 60 days, and you must enter all nine digits of your Social Security number.
Gather REAL ID papers
One identity document, two Georgia residency proofs from different sources, and any records of a name change. If you are not a citizen, follow DDS's immigration document list, and bring originals rather than translations.
Earn the permit
Pay $10, pass the eye exam, then score 15 of 20 on both Road Rules and Road Signs. You leave with a Class CP.
Practice with a licensed adult
Your practice partner must be over 21, hold a Class C and ride up front beside you. Paying for lessons at a certified school is up to you.
Pass the road skills test
Book online and arrive with your permit and a car that is insured, registered and tagged. Score at least 75 percent, smile for the photo and pay $32.
Start here: no course, same exams
The teen requirements (Joshua's Law, ADAP and school enrollment proof) stop applying at 18. From 18, DDS handles you as a Class C applicant, and what remains is documents, exams and the fee.
If you are 17 and thinking of waiting, understand the trade. Per DDS, an 18-year-old applying for a Class C with no permit or Class D behind them still passes the written tests and must swear or affirm, under penalty of law, to 40 practice hours including 6 at night.
Before your visit: the REAL ID folder
For a U.S. citizen, one identity document does it. Most people use an unexpired passport or passport card, or a birth certificate with a raised seal. Others use a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or a certified naturalization or citizenship certificate. If you have changed your name since, bring the certified papers for each change (marriage, divorce, adoption or a court order) so the chain is unbroken.
For residency you need two items, from two different sources or accounts, each with your name and street address. A utility bill or bank statement older than 6 months will not count, but a tax, medical or employer record from this year or last will. Your Social Security number is normally verified electronically; only if that fails will DDS ask for the card, a W-2 or something similar.
Step one at DDS: the permit
DDS's road test checklist for applicants 18 and over includes a learner's permit, so in practice the permit is your first goal. It costs $10, stays valid for 2 years, and allows driving whenever a Class C holder aged 21-plus is in the passenger seat.
Unlike teens, adults face no set holding period. If you want to road test soon after the permit, check availability at your center and book online.
Example: you pass the permit tests on a Monday, practice with your partner most evenings for three weeks, and book the first available road test after that. Nothing in the adult rules makes you wait longer.
Road test day
Bring a safe car that is insured for liability, registered, and wearing a plate that has not expired. The traditional test puts an examiner in the passenger seat, and you need 75 percent. The virtual version has the examiner watching through a two-way camera while a licensed adult aged 21 or more rides with you.
Expect to parallel park, back up around 50 feet, turn the car around, and show clean stops, turns, yielding, overtaking and spacing. Fail once and you can retry the next day; fail twice and you wait a week; a crash or violation during the test means 30 days.
If you already hold a license from elsewhere
New residents apply within 30 days. A license that is current, or lapsed for 2 years or less, is surrendered, and after an eye test that is it. Beyond 2 years lapsed, you test from scratch (vision, written and road) and need a certified copy of your record from the issuing state.
The minimum age to transfer is 18, or 17 if your out-of-state license is the equivalent of a Class C. Licenses from U.S. territories follow the DDS reciprocity page, and foreign licenses follow the Drivers From Other Nations page, because whether you test depends on where yours was issued.
After you pass: paying and saving
As of October 2026, an 8-year Class C is $32 and each permit testing attempt is $10. Customer Service Centers take cash, cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. On the website or in the DDS 2 GO app you pay by card, and some transactions done there cost $5 less.
Before buying any course for insurance reasons, talk to your agent. Under O.C.G.A. 33-9-42, an insurer may lower your premium after the 6-hour Driver Improvement class at a DDS-certified clinic, but eligibility and the size of the cut are its call.
Georgia adult drivers ed: common questions
Is any course required for adults in Georgia?
No. Courses are a teen requirement under Joshua's Law. From 18 you go straight to the Class C process.
Do I need a permit before the road test?
Plan on it. DDS lists the permit on the road test checklist for applicants 18 and over. It costs $10 and requires the eye exam and both written tests.
What does a Class C cost?
In October 2026, $32 buys 8 years. Some online transactions are $5 cheaper.
Can adults use the Virtual Road Test?
Yes, DDS runs a remote version using a two-way camera, with a licensed adult over 21 in the car. Ask about availability when booking.
My old license expired. Do I have to test again?
Only if it lapsed more than 2 years ago. Then expect all three exams, plus a certified record from the old state.
Will DDS take a translated document?
No. Translations are refused. Each document has to be in English with both your first name and surname on it.
What if DDS cannot verify my Social Security number?
Then it asks for proof such as your card or a W-2. Normally the number is checked electronically and no card is needed.
