South Carolina · Getting Your First License as an Adult
Your First South Carolina Driver's License as an Adult
This page is for adults in South Carolina who have never held a license, or held one long ago. Your decision is which route you are on, and for most beginners it is three visits or fewer. First, pass the eye and knowledge tests for a beginner's permit. Next, keep that permit 30 days or more. Last, pass the road test. You need no course, and as of October 2026 the eight year license is $25 and arrives by mail.
- Course at 18 or older
- Not required
- Shortest time on the permit
- 30 days
- Eight year license (October 2026)
- $25
- Waits after a failed road test
- 2 business days, then 7 days, then 30 days
- New residents
- 45 days to apply
- Driving record
- $10
Step by step
Pick REAL ID or standard first
REAL ID takes two proofs of a South Carolina address, a standard card one. Settle it now so a single trip covers everything.
Clear the eye and knowledge tests
Bring originals of everything on Form MV-93 or MV-94. The test is $2.00 and the permit $2.50.
Use your 30 days well
Practice with a licensed driver 21 or older who has a year of experience. Cover every maneuver on the road test, not just your commute.
Find a test car
Bring the registration card, the insurance card and a current plate, and make sure everything on the car works. You can use a rental if the contract names you as insured.
Show up for the road test
Walk in between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. (from 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays), book an afternoon slot, or go to an authorized third party tester.
Pay and wait for the mail
Pay $25. Your temporary certificate covers you for up to 30 days, and the eight year card arrives in 7 to 15 business days.
First, which route are you on?
Start by placing yourself. Brand new driver: Section 56-1-50(F) makes you begin on a beginner's permit, and because of Section 56-1-50(G), in force since November 13, 2024, you can test after 30 days instead of 180 once you are 18. Current license from another state: no permit, just a transfer. Licensed long ago: the same 2024 law gives SCDMV the option to excuse you from the permit if your earlier experience is enough, so bring an old license or driving record.
If your license from another state expired nine or more months ago, expect the knowledge and road tests in addition to the eye test.
Before your first visit: documents
Originals or government-issued copies only. SCDMV turns away photocopies and scans and checks your Social Security details with the Social Security Administration, so your documents need to match the name on your Social Security record.
Married, divorced or changed your name in court? Bring the full paper trail from birth name to current name. A U.S. passport or passport card in your current name can replace that whole chain, and SCDMV prints the passport name on the license.
- A birth certificate or a valid U.S. passport
- Your Social Security number
- Physical South Carolina address proof dated within nine months (two for REAL ID)
- Any name change documents
- If you are a lawfully present non-citizen, the Form MV-94 documents instead
On road test day
First the car gets inspected. Brakes, horn, headlights, wipers, signals, mirrors, defroster, speedometer and seat belts must all be in working order. Then you drive, and the examiner will look for smooth lane changes and turns, have you name road signs, and ask for parallel parking, a 100 foot back-up, straight line backing, hill parking and a three point turnaround. Light rain is acceptable if the wipers on low or intermittent keep the glass clear.
Only you and the examiner can be in or around the car while you test, but a licensed driver does have to come to the branch with you. Failures bring waits: two business days after the first, seven calendar days after the second, 30 calendar days after the third and any after that.
So if you get your permit on June 2 and practice steadily, a first road test in early July is realistic; a failure that day would push the retry back only two business days.
Testing through a third party or One Stop school
Some approved driving schools are One Stop Driver Training and Testing Programs, meaning the same school that teaches you can also test you for a first regular permit or license, which may spare you a trip to a branch. SCDMV can still call anyone back for a retest by its own examiners, so choose a program from SCDMV's official list.
What you will pay
Here is the October 2026 bill for a first adult license. Each knowledge test attempt is $2.00. The beginner's permit is $2.50. The license, good for eight years, is $25. Pay by card and SCDMV adds a service fee of $1 plus 1.7 percent.
Lawfully present non-citizens may get a shorter license tied to the length of their authorized stay, priced at $12.50 for four years or less. If you need your old state's driving record as proof of history, order it from that state's agency before you come in.
If you already have another state's license
If you have moved here for good and your license is valid, apply within 45 days. Expect an eye test and the same identity and address documents a new applicant brings. Every license and ID card from another state gets surrendered, and the fee is $25. Turning in a REAL ID from your old state does not count as proof for a South Carolina REAL ID; you document your identity all over again.
Cannot hand in the old license? A driving record from that state works instead. Vehicles are a separate matter: you also have 45 days to register them with SCDMV.
South Carolina adult drivers ed: common questions
Can an 18 year old skip the permit in South Carolina?
Only in limited cases. A first-time driver must hold a beginner's permit for 30 days or more, but SCDMV can waive the permit when you have enough earlier driving experience, for example a past license.
How long does the whole process take at 18 or older?
At least 30 days from the permit, then up to 15 business days for the card to arrive by mail. The rest depends on how fast you are ready for the road test.
Can I test in a rental car?
Yes. The contract must name you as an insured driver, and the car needs its plate, registration, insurance card and fully working equipment.
How long is the license good for?
Eight years for most people, at $25 in October 2026. International customers can be issued a shorter one that matches their authorized stay.
I just moved here. What is my deadline?
Forty-five days after a permanent move. Military members and students here only temporarily can keep a valid out-of-state license.
Where can I take the road test?
Your choice of an SCDMV branch (with or without an appointment), an authorized third party tester, or a One Stop Driver Training and Testing Program that SCDMV has approved.
Does someone have to come with me to the road test?
Yes. You must bring a licensed driver to the branch, even though only you and the examiner are in the car during the test.
