Rhode Island · Getting Your First License as an Adult
First Rhode Island Driver's License at 18 or Older
This page is for adults in Rhode Island who have never held a license, or who arrive with one from somewhere else. Your decision is whether you test or transfer. If you test, there is no required course, just three stages: pass a computer exam in Cranston to earn an instruction permit, drive on it for a month or more (30 days minimum), and then pass a road test. Those cost $8.50, $28.50 and $44.50 as of October 2026. If you hold a current out-of-state license, you can usually transfer it for $49.50 with no testing.

Step by step
Decide: test or transfer
You test if you have no license at all, only a foreign one, or a Rhode Island card that lapsed over five years ago. You transfer if your card from another state is current or has been expired under five years.
Complete the LI-1 and gather documents
Page three of the application is the DMV's own document checklist; work straight from it. Planning on REAL ID? Pack its extra papers now.
Reserve your exam
Book online for the Cranston headquarters, the only place adults can test. Give yourself time to read the entire Driver's Manual beforehand.
Spend 30 days on the permit
Practice as much as you can, and take lessons if no one can ride with you. Schedule your road test on the DMV website or at any branch.
Pass the closed-course road test
Arrive in a car registered in this state and in good enough shape to clear the pre-test check. Need a different date? Cancel two full days (48 hours) ahead.
Pay and collect the license
Pay the $44.50 first license fee after you pass. Card payments carry a processor fee.
First, find your route
Four groups have to take the tests, according to the DMV's road test page. You are in one of them if you have never been licensed anywhere, if the only license you hold was issued by another country, if your license (from here or another state) ran out over five years ago, or if the DMV has placed a restriction on you because of a physical condition. If none of those describes you and you are arriving from another state, you are a transfer applicant.
If you are under 18, this page is not your path. Teens follow graduated licensing, which starts with the 33 hour course.
Before your first visit: documents and REAL ID
Download the LI-1 first. The checklist on it tells you which papers the DMV accepts to prove who you are, your Social Security number and that you live in the state. Non-citizens should bring their full set of immigration documents, since staff review all of them.
Whether to add REAL ID is up to you. Federal enforcement started May 7, 2025, and from then on the card matters only if you plan to board a domestic flight, or walk into a secure federal building, using your license rather than a passport. If you want it, the DMV asks for two documents such as utility bills that prove where you live, the number on your Social Security card, a single identity document (an unexpired passport works, as does a certified birth certificate), and paperwork for any name change. Rhode Island AAA branches issue it as well as DMV offices.
Visit one: the knowledge exam
No school can give you this exam as an adult. You reserve a seat at DMV headquarters in Cranston and take it on a computer, choosing English, Portuguese or Spanish. If you need another language, the DMV arranges a printed version ahead of time, and you supply a translator to help you before you go in and after you come out.
Study all of the manual, and give extra time to the online chapters flagged as testing material. A failed attempt locks you out for a minimum of 8 days.
Between visits: your 30 days on the permit
Thirty days is the minimum time between getting the instruction permit and your first road test. One surprise: according to the permit page on the DMV site, adults on a permit may drive solo in that window. G.L. 31-10-7 backs that up with no supervision condition. Since it is rare, get a yes from your insurance company before you try it.
Your permit lasts 12 months. You may renew it a single time, in person with a reservation, through the drop box or by mail. If it expires after that renewal, you go back to the knowledge test.
For example, if you pass the exam on April 2, the earliest road test date is early May. Use that month to practice the skills in the test guide rather than just driving around.
Visit two: road test day
Expect a closed course, with the examiner watching from outside the vehicle. Before you start, the car gets checked: Rhode Island plates and a current registration, working tires, signals and lights, and a valid inspection sticker. A car skips the sticker requirement only when it is younger than two years and has under 24,000 miles on it.
Leave rentals, antique and low-speed vehicles at home, along with cameras and pets. A failed test means 30 days before the next one. A second failure means 90 days, and every failure after that means 180 days, until the permit expires.
Moving here with a license from another state
The clock starts when you establish residency, and you get 30 days. Your current card from the other state is the key document, as long as it is valid or lapsed under five years. Lost it? Ask your former state for a certified driving record; it has to show your license number plus when the license was issued and when it expires.
The license you get on a transfer is good for a maximum of two years and runs out on your birthday. A few details trip people up. A REAL ID from your old state is not automatically honored, so bring the documents if you want one. If your license comes from a U.S. territory, only the Cranston office can process it. Endorsements come along with you, with two exceptions, HazMat and passenger. People who drove a taxi or limousine for pay need to send the CDL section a chauffeur application.
After you pass: the first license period
State law treats your new card as a first license, and G.L. 31-10-26 keeps an eye on that period. A single moving violation, or a single reportable crash, is enough for the Traffic Tribunal to call you in. The judge reviews your driving history and then rules on whether your license stays valid.
Keep your address up to date with the DMV and drive carefully through the first year. If you moved here from another country, an International Driving Permit is useful on trips abroad, but it is not a substitute for a Rhode Island license now that you are a resident.
Rhode Island adult drivers ed: common questions
I'm 18 and have never driven. How do I get licensed in Rhode Island?
Three stages, with no class required at your age: the computer knowledge exam at DMV headquarters, a minimum of 30 days on the instruction permit, and finally the road test.
What is the total cost of an adult's first license?
$81.50 in all, as of October 2026: the permit is $8.50, the road test is $28.50 and the license itself is $44.50. A $3.50 technology surcharge is already built into each one.
Can I swap my out-of-state license without taking tests?
Usually. A license that is still valid, or that lapsed under five years ago, transfers without tests. Once it has been expired five years or longer, you start over with the permit exam in Cranston followed by a road test.
Does another state's REAL ID carry over?
It does not. If you want the Rhode Island version, bring the REAL ID paperwork with you when you come in to transfer.
Can I take the adult exam at my local branch?
No. For adults, the exam happens in one place, the headquarters building at 600 New London Avenue in Cranston, and you need a reservation.
What if I get a ticket soon after I'm licensed?
During the first license period, one moving violation or one reportable crash can get you summoned to the Traffic Tribunal, where a judge looks at your history and decides if you keep driving.
If I pass the exam today, when can I take the road test?
No sooner than 30 days later. That is the shortest time an adult can be on the instruction permit before testing.
