Your First Louisiana Driver's License as an Adult

This page is for adults in Louisiana who have never held a license this state recognizes, and for newcomers unsure which group they fall into. Your first decision is whether you count as a first-time applicant, because that alone decides whether you take a course. If you do, the order is a TIP from OMV, then 14 hours of pre-licensing instruction at a school OMV licenses, and passing eye, knowledge and road tests before it issues a Class E license. After 17 there is no 180 day permit wait. Holding a valid license from another state instead means a 30 day transfer with only an eye test.

Step by step

  1. Find out if the course applies to you

First-time applicants need driver ed. Holding a current license from another state, or from a country with reciprocity, exempts you; use OMV's DouxWe tool or phone OMV if unsure.

  2. Get the TIP

Take a primary ID, Social Security proof, residency proof and one extra ID (an employee badge or insurance card works) to OMV. Pass the eye test and leave with the Temporary Instructional Permit.

  3. Do the 14 hours

Complete the classroom portion (6 hours, in a room or through a state approved online format), then fit the 8 instructor drives into the 90 days that follow.

  4. Clear both exams at the school

The school gives the knowledge test (80 percent) and the road test (80 points). An instructor who thinks you are ready may skip the 70 point check and go straight to the real road test.

  5. Finish at OMV

Hand over the TIP and course certificate, bring the extra REAL ID papers if you want the gold star, pay, and have your picture taken.

Before anything: are you a first-time applicant?

OMV considers you first-time if you have never held a license Louisiana recognizes. That covers adults who only ever drove on a permit in another state, and holders of licenses from countries without a reciprocal agreement. If that describes you and you are 18 or older, you owe the 14 hour adult course; the 38 hour course is an optional substitute.

The exempt list: any valid U.S. state license; licenses from Germany, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan; and licenses from U.S. territories and freely associated states (Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, the Mariana and Marshall Islands, Palau and Micronesia). Holders skip driver ed and the knowledge and road tests, though they still take the eye test.

Your document folder

For a standard card, OMV asks for four things: a primary document such as a passport, military ID or certified birth certificate; Social Security verification; a Louisiana address document; and a secondary ID, like a photo work badge, a high school diploma or an insurance card. Bring originals or certified copies.

Your Social Security number can be proven with a W-2, an SSA printout or the card, or you can simply recite it to the clerk. No number at all? Bring a letter from the Social Security Administration. Names must match across documents, or be tied together by marriage or court records.

If you want REAL ID

The REAL ID version is marked with a gold-edged white star near the top edge, and its price matches the standard card. Since May 7, 2025, domestic flights and some federal facilities require it or an alternative like a passport.

For the star you need identity, birth date and lawful status documents, Social Security verification that OMV runs through the federal SSOLV check, and two residency documents from different sources, say a utility bill plus a bank statement or lease. If a relative supplies your residency proof, that relative must come with you.

On test day

Eyesight is checked at OMV (20/40, using either eye or both). The written exam happens at your school and draws on the state driver's guide, with an 80 percent pass mark; a translator may help except on commercial tests.

The road test scores parking, backing, lane changes, turns and yielding, and you need 80. Adults have a shortcut: if your instructor thinks you are ready, the road test can replace the end-of-course assessment, so you may finish the course and pass the test on the same day.

One realistic pace: classroom hours online over a week, four Saturday sessions of 2 hours each in the car, and the road test at the end of the last session.

At the counter: what you pay

In October 2026 the basic Class E fee was $32.25 under age 70 and $18.75 from 70. A local service charge may apply at some offices and tag agents; OMV's pages give $6 in one place and $8 in another as the maximum. Turning the TIP into a license costs nothing more.

A Class E license runs to your birthday about six years out. Tuition is your own arrangement with the school, and private road testers may bill separately. Issuing the license also signs up male U.S. citizens, up to 26, for Selective Service automatically.

If you are moving here with a license

You get 30 days after establishing a Louisiana domicile to transfer. If your non-commercial license is current and comparable to a Louisiana Class E or D, the eye test is all you take. Bring your primary ID document, Social Security number, an address document, and the old photo license; OMV keeps it and destroys it.

If the old card is gone, a certified record from your previous state, listing your name and license number, fills in. Upgrading to a Louisiana chauffeur license (Class D) from an out-of-state car license requires the written exam only. Registering a car here also means getting Louisiana insurance.

After you are licensed: insurance

Check whether your insurer rewards new adult drivers for having finished driver ed. La. R.S. 22:1457 separately allows up to 10 percent off for an approved defensive driving course, but you cannot combine that with a driver education discount.

Louisiana adult drivers ed: common questions

What are the steps to a first Louisiana license at 18 or older?

Get a TIP at OMV, complete the 14 hour course at a licensed school, pass the school's knowledge and road tests, then return to OMV with the certificate, pass the eye test and pay.

Is REAL ID required in Louisiana?

Optional. Since May 7, 2025, though, U.S. air travel requires either the star card or a substitute like a passport. Both versions cost the same.

How many residency documents does REAL ID need?

Two, from different sources, each showing your name and Louisiana street address. Even a standard card needs proof of where you live, but REAL ID requires both.

Will I be tested when I switch from another state?

Only on eyesight, if your non-commercial license is current and comparable to Class E or D. Switch within 30 days of moving.

How long will my license be good for?

A Class E license runs out on your birthday roughly six years after issue.

Can I finish the course and road test on the same day?

Possibly. If your instructor decides you are ready, the real road test replaces the end-of-course check, and 80 points passes.

I only ever drove on a permit in another state. Am I first-time?

Yes. Permit-only experience does not count as a license, so the 14 hour course applies to you.
