Adult Drivers Ed in Indiana: Your Route to a First License

Optional

This page is for anyone 18 or older in Indiana who has never held a license, or who is coming back after a long gap, and wants to know whether a class is mandatory. It is not. You can go straight to a branch, earn a learner's permit with a vision screening and a knowledge exam, practice with a qualified licensed driver, and then take the road test. The BMV's practice standard is 50 supervised hours with 10 at night, which is why a handful of paid lessons often saves time.

Step by step

  1. Collect your originals

The BMV wants to see who you are, your lawful status, your Social Security number, and two different papers that put you at an Indiana address. Check the BMV's online checklist first. Matricula Consular cards are not accepted.

  2. Walk in for the permit exam

Show up with half an hour or more to spare before closing. Appointments are only for people who need the questions read aloud or who are deaf or hard of hearing. Expect a vision screening on the same visit.

  3. Drive with a qualified passenger

The person beside you holds a license and is 25 or over, or is your husband or wife with a license and at least 21. Keep a running record on the BMV log form, working toward 50 hours that include 10 after dark.

  4. Fill gaps with a few lessons

BMV licensed driver training schools take adult students. Many can also give you the skills test, which saves a branch trip.

  5. Take the road test

Reserve a branch slot and be there a quarter hour before it starts. If your school is set up to test, that works too.

  6. Pick up your license

New drivers younger than 21 get a probationary card that limits hours and passengers. At 21 and up you get a standard license. The fee is $17.50 if you are under 75.

First, the short answer on classes

Indiana's driver education rules exist to control how early a teenager can be licensed. They do not apply to adults. At 18 or older you can skip any course and move straight through permit, practice and test.

What you cannot skip is the testing. Adults sit the same knowledge exam and drive the same road test as teenagers, so you still need to prepare. The Driver's Manual is free on the BMV site, and a licensed school can cover the driving side if you have nobody to practice with.

Before you apply: documents and translations

Your stack of originals has four jobs. It has to establish who you are, show you are lawfully in the U.S., confirm your Social Security number, and place you at an Indiana address with two separate papers. A Matricula Consular card will be refused for any of these.

If a document is not in English, you need a typed English translation on letterhead from a government office, an accredited school or a translation agency. The translator signs a statement that it is accurate and that they did not do it for a friend, relative or business contact. A branch cannot take a homemade translation, so sort this out weeks ahead.

Your learner's permit

From 16 on, nobody needs a course to get a permit. You show the documents, pass the eye check and pass the written exam, then pay $9 (the fee as of October 2026).

Once you are 18, your practice partner can be any licensed driver aged 25 and up, or a spouse of 21 or more who holds a license. Their own driving privileges have to be in good standing: not lapsed, suspended or revoked. Keep an eye on the expiration date: if the permit lapses for more than 180 days, you sit the knowledge exam again to renew it.

While you practice: the log and the waiting period

According to the BMV's license page, Indiana law expects permit holders to put in 50 or more supervised hours, 10 in darkness, and the same page names the people allowed to ride with learners older than 18. You hand the log in when you apply.

The BMV does not say this the same way everywhere. A separate FAQ frames the log as something for new drivers who are 18 or under. If you are in your twenties or older, phone the branch ahead of test day, and fill in a log anyway. It costs you nothing and protects you from a wasted trip.

There is also a minimum wait. Under 21, you keep the permit 180 days before the probationary license. And according to the BMV page for new residents, someone who arrives here with no valid license from elsewhere also has to spend 180 days on an Indiana permit. Treat that six months as your practice window, and book a test date early.

On test day

Book through myBMV no sooner than three weeks out and no later than 48 hours before. Get there 15 minutes early, driven by someone with a license. Your car needs current registration and insurance and has to pass a quick safety look, and lane assist or similar features must be switched off. Have your practice log with you.

Expect to be graded on how you hold your lane, how much room you leave, how steady your speed is, how you handle intersections, and how you reverse out of a space and park. Four errors stop the test immediately: disobeying a sign or signal, speeding, going over a solid yellow center line, and not yielding. After a fail you wait 7 days or more, and a third fail means two months.

If you already hold a license from another state

New residents get 60 days to make the switch. Bring the license you hold now, either your driving record or a letter verifying it, and the usual identity, status, Social Security and address papers. You will take an eye test. As long as your old license is still valid, there has been no written exam for transfers since July 1, 2019.

If the old license has lapsed, you sit the written exam. Lapsed over five years, or held under a year, and the road test is added. Every license or ID from your old state gets surrendered, and you drive on a 30 day temporary card while the BMV verifies your papers.

When paying for lessons makes sense

Lessons pay for themselves in three situations: nobody aged 25 or more with a license is free to ride with you, your driving habits were formed in another country, or you have one failed road test behind you already. Some schools also handle the test, which is handy where branch slots fill fast.

Already licensed and hoping to cut your premium? The BMV approved Driver Safety Program lasts 4 hours or more and comes with a 4 point credit on your record. We found no Indiana rule forcing companies to discount for it, so have your agent confirm any discount by email.

Indiana adult drivers ed: common questions

Is a class required for adults to get an Indiana license?

No. Pass the eye test and written exam for a permit, put in your practice with an eligible rider, then take the road test. No class is involved.

Who can supervise me if I am over 18?

Any licensed driver aged 25 or more, or a spouse with a license who is 21 or more. Their license must be in good standing.

Will the branch ask for a 50 hour log from an adult?

Possibly. The license page sets 50 hours, 10 of them at night, for permit holders, while an FAQ ties the log to drivers 18 and under. Call ahead and bring a completed log either way.

I just moved to Indiana. How long can I use my old license?

You have 60 days. With a valid license you skip the written test. With a lapsed one you take it.

What will my first Indiana license cost?

Per the January 1, 2026 fee chart: $17.50 if you are younger than 75, $11 between 75 and 84, and $7 from 85 up. Add $9 for the permit.

Can I take my road test at a driving school instead of the BMV?

Yes. According to the BMV, licensed schools may test any permit holder who is at least 16, adults included.

Which documents do I bring for the permit?

Papers that establish your identity, lawful status and Social Security number, plus two that show where you live in Indiana. Anything not in English needs a certified translation. Matricula Consular cards are not taken.

How far in advance should I book the road test?

Branch slots open three weeks out and close 48 hours before. A licensed school may be able to fit you in as well.

Is my license probationary if I am 19 or 20?

Yes. Anyone licensed before 21 gets the probationary version, with its hour and passenger rules, after at least 180 days on the permit.
