Step by step

  1. Complete MV3001 and assemble documents

Complete the Wisconsin Driver License Application (MV3001). Then gather documents for your citizenship or legal status, your name and birth date, and your identity, along with your Social Security number and two items proving a Wisconsin address.

  2. Decide now about REAL ID

Want a REAL ID? Bring the full set of documents on this visit, including any name change papers. A standard card carries a not for federal purposes marking.

  3. Pass the written and vision checks

Testing is walk in and free at the service centers that offer it. Expect to spend about 45 minutes.

  4. Drive on the permit for a week or more

Practice with a qualified supervisor until parking, lane changes, merging onto highways and night driving feel easy.

  5. Book and take the skills test

Schedule online, bring a registered car in safe condition and pay the $15 fee. If you cannot make it, cancel at least 24 hours ahead.

  6. Buy the probationary license

Pay $28 and keep the paper receipt, which is good for 45 days, until the card shows up in the mail.

Before the first visit: documents and REAL ID

For each category, Wisconsin wants an original or a certified copy: legal presence, identity, name and date of birth, Social Security number, two proofs of where you live, and any name change records if your name no longer matches your birth certificate. Sometimes one document covers two categories.

REAL ID is your choice in Wisconsin, and WisDOT marks compliant cards with a star. Federal enforcement at airports started May 7, 2025, so to board a domestic flight you now need either a REAL ID or another accepted document, for instance a passport. No passport? Ask for REAL ID on your very first card and avoid a return visit and a duplicate fee.

Visit one: tests and permit

On the first trip you sit the signs test and the knowledge test and have your eyes checked. All three are free at a service center, take around 45 minutes and are walk in only. If you fail, come back the next day; you may try up to five times in a year.

Holders of a valid license from another country who pass the knowledge test do not have to wait seven days, so they can move straight to booking the road test.

Visit two: the road test

Before you drive anywhere, the examiner inspects the car for safety defects and current registration. A car that fails that check can cost you the test, so sort out lights, tires and paperwork beforehand. You will also be asked to show the wipers, the defroster and the parking brake.

The drive itself follows a route the examiner chooses and includes the maneuvers described in the Motorists' Handbook. An interpreter is not allowed in the car, though examiners can communicate with cards and gestures.

If the road test goes badly

WisDOT sets a waiting period of 1 to 14 days based on how you did, and each attempt costs $15 whether you pass or fail.

Skipping the appointment, or cancelling with less than 24 hours' notice, costs $15 too and is scored as a failed test, and you then wait seven days or more before retesting. If something comes up, cancel early.

After you pass: the probationary years

Wisconsin starts every new driver on a probationary license. Adults escape the passenger and nighttime rules teens live with. What still applies: from your second conviction on, points are doubled, and hitting 12 points in a 12 month span suspends you for six months, three times the two months a regular license holder would get at that total.

Your probationary license is good until two years past your next birthday. After that you move to a regular license, valid eight years, for $42.50 as of October 2026.

Already licensed elsewhere? Moving to Wisconsin

Moving here with a license? You have 60 days after becoming a resident to switch, 30 if you hold a CDL. As long as your old license is current, or expired for eight years or less, a vision test is normally the only test. You are issued a regular license at 21 or older with three or more years of experience and a license expired no more than six months. Anyone else starts on a probationary license.

REAL ID status from another state does not come with you, so bring every REAL ID document. Settle any suspension in your previous state before applying. And if another state convicted you of an alcohol or drug related driving offense within four years, WisDOT will want proof that you are complying with the assessment or treatment plan there.

Service members

Are you on active duty with Wisconsin as your home of record? Then your Wisconsin license remains valid while you serve. It runs out at the earlier of 30 days after you get back to Wisconsin or 90 days after you are discharged. If service is why it lapsed, WisDOT waives the late fee.

Wisconsin adult drivers ed: common questions

What will my first Wisconsin license cost in total?

As of October 2026, the permit is $35, the skills test $15 and the probationary license $28. Pass the road test on the first try and you spend about $78 in total.

Do I really need a permit before the road test as an adult?

Yes, for at least seven days. The one exception is someone with a valid foreign license who has passed the knowledge test.

May I bring my own car to the road test?

Yes, provided the car is registered and in safe condition. The examiner looks it over before the drive and may refuse a car with defects.

How long until the license card arrives?

Cards come by mail, normally about 10 days later. Meanwhile, the paper receipt from the service center is valid for driving for 45 days.

Do I have to get a REAL ID?

No, REAL ID is optional. For domestic flights, though, you will need one or another accepted ID such as a passport.

I just moved to Wisconsin. What is my deadline?

You have 60 days from becoming a resident, or 30 with a CDL. You are a resident once Wisconsin is your principal home, or you pay Wisconsin income tax, or you are registered to vote here.

What happens if I skip my road test appointment?

You are charged $15, the test counts as a fail, and you must wait at least seven days for another attempt. The same applies if you cancel with under 24 hours' notice.
