A First New Mexico Driver's License for Adults, Visit by Visit
This page is for adults who have never held a New Mexico license: a 19 year old who skipped driving in high school, a 40 year old learning late, or someone arriving from another state. What you need to decide first is which card to apply for, REAL ID or Standard, and whether None for the Road applies to you. If you are 18 to 24, it does. At 25 and up it applies only after a DWI conviction. Then it is one in-person visit with three exams (eyes, written, driving) and a fee of $18 for four years or $34 for eight, as of October 2026.

Step by step
Get None for the Road done (18 to 24)
Order the study-at-home class from UNM Continuing Education online, or call (505) 277-0051 or (877) 663-7465. An old certificate is just as good as a new one.
Pick your card, then your papers
REAL ID means one more document than Standard: proof of an identification number, on top of identity and residency proof.
Show up in person, before mid-afternoon
No online application exists for a first license. If you arrive after 3 p.m., the office may not start your written test.
Read the chart, then take the written test
One eye has to manage 20/40. A failed written test can be redone that same day, no more than twice in the week.
Bring a car for the drive
It must be safe, registered and insured, and you need a licensed driver to come with you.
Pay and pick up your temporary
$18 or $34, plus $15 if you are moving here from another state. The permanent card follows in the mail.
Before you apply: the DWI awareness class
Section 66-5-9 makes every first-time licensee between 18 and 24 hand over a None for the Road Certificate of Completion. UNM Continuing Education runs this teach-yourself course, not the MVD. You can pick up a brochure and an application at any field office, and the program's office takes calls 8 to 5, Monday to Friday.
Over 25? The class only matters if a DWI conviction appears anywhere in your history, in any state, from any year. In that case finish None for the Road or document another approved DWI prevention and education program. A clean history means no class.
An example: you are 23, moving from Arizona where you never drove. You still need None for the Road. At 26 with no DWI, you would not.
Before you apply: REAL ID or Standard paperwork
REAL ID requires three kinds of document: an identification number, identity and age, and two separate proofs of New Mexico residency. The Standard license skips the identification number. If you cannot show lawful status, Standard (license or ID) is the only route open.
Bring certified English translations of anything in another language. The translator signs, prints their name and gives contact details, certifying the translation is complete. Summaries and abstracts are turned away.
Before the road test: getting practice in
The MVD manual links the instructional permit to driver ed enrollment and sets a supervision rule: a licensed driver of at least 21, licensed three years or more, in the next seat. No adult holding period appears in the pages we read.
Driving with no valid license or permit is illegal, so ask the field office before your first drive whether you should hold a permit at your age. If you have never been behind the wheel, a few lessons at a Traffic Safety Bureau licensed school are the safest way to start.
On test day: three exams in one visit
Vision first, then the written knowledge test, then the road test. Because offices generally will not start a written test after 3 p.m., come in the morning.
Bad first attempt on the written test? Try again right away, as long as you stay within two attempts that week. Three failures, written or road, send you away for six months from your application date.
After you pass: cost and length of the license
The October 2026 fees are $18 for a four year license and $34 for eight years. Someone transferring from another state adds the one time $15 DWI records check, so the totals become $33 and $49.
You cannot get the eight year term if you would turn 79 during its second half. Starting at 79, licenses are good for one year and renewing costs nothing.
If you are moving here with a license
Establish residency, then swap: hand in the other state's card and apply for New Mexico's. You take the eye exam, but a current out-of-state license excuses you from the written and road tests. The clerk punches a hole in your old card and gives it back; with your temporary it works as ID for 45 days.
If your license has lapsed, you may hit a contradiction. The public license page triggers the written test after one year expired; the procedures manual uses five years for both tests. Ask the office which applies. A current license from abroad always means the written test.
A valid license does not excuse anyone 18 to 24 who is getting a first New Mexico license from None for the Road. Bring the certificate.
If something blocks your license
No license will be issued while your driving privilege is suspended, revoked or denied, here or in any other state. Clear that first, normally with the state that put the hold on.
New Mexico adult drivers ed: common questions
Is driver ed required for adults in New Mexico?
No full course. First-time licensees between 18 and 24 do have to complete None for the Road, a home-study DWI class.
What does a first adult license cost?
As of October 2026, $18 for four years or $34 for eight. Movers from another state add $15 once for a DWI records check.
Will I have to take a road test?
For a first license, yes. If you hold a current license from another state, the road and written tests are both waived.
Can I get a license if I cannot prove lawful status?
Yes, a Standard license, which uses proof of identity and age plus two residency documents.
How soon do I get my card?
You leave with a temporary license the same day. The permanent card is mailed.
What if I fail the driving test three times?
You wait six months, counted from your application date, before testing again.
Whose car do I use for the road test?
Any safe car that is registered and insured. Bring a licensed driver along with you.
