First Oklahoma Driver License at 18+: The Adult Path
This page is for adults in Oklahoma, 18 or older, heading for a first Class D license, and for newcomers bringing a license from another state. The question most people have is how much of the process they can skip. Quite a lot: no permit, no course and no practice log are required. You pass a vision check, the 20 question knowledge test and a road test, then pay $42.50 for four years as of October 2026. If you already hold a valid license elsewhere, you usually skip both tests and just bring documents and pass the eye check.

Step by step
Gather the paperwork
Find one identity document, one lawful presence document and proof of residency, two if you want REAL ID, and know your Social Security number. If your name has changed, bring the marriage certificate or court order that links the names.
Book the knowledge test
Use Service Oklahoma's Find a Location tool to schedule the Class D knowledge test, which includes the vision check. Remote testing is also an option, and a commercial or public school drivers ed certificate lets you skip the knowledge test.
Decide whether to practice on a permit
The road test can be as soon as the next business day after the knowledge test. If you want legal practice first, take a permit and keep it 30 days.
Pre-apply and book the road test
Fill in the online pre-application, which gives the examiner a record to enter your result against, and then schedule at an office or with a designated examiner who is eligible to test you.
Drive the test
Arrive in a registered, insured car that will pass inspection, with no pets or passengers. Examiners do not test when roads are slick or hazardous.
Pay and leave with a temporary
Choose the four year card at $42.50 or the eight year card at $81.00, and add $4 per failed test. You get a temporary paper credential and the card arrives by mail.
The whole adult route on one screen
Graduated licensing ends at 18 in Oklahoma. From then on the state asks for three things: a vision screening, the knowledge test and the road test. A course, a permit and a practice log are all optional.
Skip the permit and, per the Driver Manual, your road test can be the very next business day after the knowledge test. That shortcut is only useful to someone who can already drive, since nobody evaluates you before the examiner does.
An example: you pass the knowledge test on a Tuesday afternoon. If you already drive confidently, you could take the road test Wednesday. If you have barely driven, a permit and 30 days of practice will serve you better than a quick fail and a 30 day wait later.
Before you go: documents and REAL ID
Bring the original or a certified copy of your proof of identity and lawful presence; a plain photocopy or a notarized copy will be turned away. A U.S. passport, a green card, or a certified birth certificate are the usual choices.
Anything you use for residency has to list you by name at your home address. Statements issued monthly need to be less than 60 days old, yearly ones like a W-2 less than a year old, and leases or titles must still be in force. Two are required for REAL ID, which (or a passport) has been needed at airport security for domestic flights since May 7, 2025.
Your Social Security number is needed but the card is not. If your name has changed, possibly more than once, bring the paper trail for each change, for example a marriage certificate or a divorce decree.
On test day: vision and knowledge
Expect 20 questions pulled from the state manual and a pass mark of 15. Topics include traffic law, road signs, safe habits, and alcohol and drug rules. A failure means waiting until at least the following day.
Completed a course at a commercial or public school? Its certificate gets you out of the knowledge test. Your eyesight is checked in person regardless, during the same appointment you booked for the knowledge test.
On test day: what the road test grades
You will be graded on turning, reversing, parking on a slope and parallel parking, and on whether you signal, hold your lane, obey signs and lights, yield properly and keep watch for cars and people. An automatic fail comes from piling up errors, doing something dangerous, breaking a traffic law, hitting something, or declining to attempt a maneuver.
You have three tries, each at least a day apart. After the third fail there is a 30 day wait, then one attempt per 30 days. The Driver Manual adds that someone who fails three times on the no-permit route must hold a learner permit for 30 days before testing again. Service Oklahoma's own New Driver License page mentions only the 30 day wait, so ask the examiner whether the permit applies to you.
There is one alternative to the state office. If you have had a permit for 30 days and completed a school course (public, private or commercial), a certified designated examiner can give your road test.
At the counter: fees
A first Class D license is $42.50 for four years as of October 2026, and Service Oklahoma lists $81.00 for eight years. Every failed test adds $4 when the credential is issued, and a replacement later costs $25.
Under the June 1, 2025 fee schedule, anyone 65 or older gets a Class D free. Some offices do not accept cash, so check payment options before you go.
If you are moving to Oklahoma with a license
New residents must switch to an Oklahoma license. Provided your old license is current, or lapsed within the last 6 months, and you are not switching vehicle class, Service Oklahoma can waive the knowledge and road tests when your record meets its standards. The vision screening still applies.
Along with the old license, bring the identity, lawful presence and residency proof every applicant needs. Two things will not transfer at all, an expired commercial license and a permit, and a license that lapsed more than 6 months ago puts you through the full testing process.
If you are not a U.S. citizen
If you are not a citizen, you show your immigration documents each time you get, renew or replace a license, and the card's expiration date matches theirs. Each of those transactions is handled by a Service Oklahoma examiner.
Green card holders get more flexibility: while the card is valid, any Service Oklahoma office or licensed operator can handle the renewal or replacement. Check the Required Documents form for your exact list before the visit.
Oklahoma adult drivers ed: common questions
Do I need a permit before my first license if I am 18?
No. Adults can test without one. If you choose a permit for practice, keep it 30 days before you apply for the license.
What does the first adult license cost?
Four years costs $42.50 and eight years costs $81.00 (October 2026), with $4 more for every failed test.
Can I take the road test the day after the knowledge test?
Yes. If you skip the permit, the manual allows the road test on the next business day after you pass.
What do I need for a REAL ID license?
Identity proof, lawful presence proof, a pair of residency documents, and your Social Security number. Bring originals or certified copies, never photocopies.
I am moving from another state. Do I retest?
Usually not, if your license is valid or expired 6 months or less and your record meets Service Oklahoma's standards. You still take the vision screening.
Can a drivers ed certificate replace the knowledge test for an adult?
Yes, as long as the course was through a public school or a commercial driving school.
Will they test me if it is icy?
No. Examiners do not give road tests when roads are slick or hazardous, so watch the weather and have a backup date in mind.
