Wyoming · Getting Your First License as an Adult

Your First Wyoming Driver's License as an Adult

This page is for adults who have never had a Wyoming license and want to know how much work stands between them and one. If you have never been licensed anywhere, you pass a written test and an eye check, get a learner's permit, keep it at least 10 days and then pass a skills test in your own car. No course is required. If you hold a valid license from another state, it is usually simpler: the written and road tests are normally skipped, and you just switch within a year.

Step by step

  1. Work out which tests you face

Never licensed, or lapsed two years or more: written, vision and skills tests. A valid out of state license: usually just vision, possibly with an examiner skills check.

  2. Collect REAL ID documents

One identity document, two residence documents showing your physical address, and Social Security proof. Add name change papers if they apply.

  3. Begin online, finish at the station

Start on oneWYO, then go to a driver exam station for the photo, eye check and any written test.

  4. Practice on the permit

If you have never been licensed, you get a learner's permit and keep it 10 days or more. Every practice drive needs a licensed driver aged 18 or older in the next seat.

  5. Schedule the skills test

Many stations require an appointment, made through oneWYO or by phone. Bring a car that is registered, insured and roadworthy.

  6. Wait for the card

Plan on four to six weeks. Need it sent somewhere else? Submit a Forwarding Request form.

Before you start: the adult route

Adults have a short road. The learner's permit is the same one teens carry, but anyone 17 or older skips the intermediate permit stage entirely. Ten days after getting the permit, you are eligible to take the skills test for full privileges.

Treat 10 days as the legal floor, not a plan. With little experience, give yourself several weeks of supervised practice, winter driving in particular, before booking the test.

Your documents, in detail

Under W.S. 31-7-111, every application needs proof of identity and of residence. On the identity side WYDOT accepts, among others, a valid U.S. passport, a state certified birth certificate, a permanent resident card, an employment authorization document, a certificate of citizenship or naturalization, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a foreign passport carrying a U.S. visa.

On the residence side you need two documents, each showing your name and your physical address in Wyoming and dated within roughly the last 30 to 45 days. Leases, rent receipts, bank statements, pay stubs, utility, phone or insurance bills, tax papers, voter registration and vehicle registration all work. Born outside the United States? Bring every document listed, because WYDOT verifies lawful status.

Visit one: the written test and eye check

Your first visit includes an automated written test based on the Rules of the Road manual, with questions on seat belt use and Wyoming law. Two attempts at the same test are allowed per day. Non commercial tests can be taken with an interpreter, and an oral version reads the questions to you through a phone.

For the eye check you need 20/40 using both eyes and a 120 degree field of vision.

Visit two: the skills test

You supply the vehicle. Before the drive, make sure the horn, wipers, mirrors, signals, lights and brakes work, that the driver and front passenger have seat belts, that each door opens from inside and from outside, and that the tires are not bald or bulging.

If you do not pass, the examiner tells you how long to wait before retesting.

Fees and how to pay

WYDOT's fee list as of October 2026: Class C license or permit, $45. Renewal, $35. Duplicate, $25. Identification card, $10. Adding a motorcycle class, $11. Stations take cash, checks and money orders, and some take cards for an extra charge.

Because the permit and the license are bought separately, a first time adult driver pays at both stages. Confirm the right fee with the counter before paying.

Already licensed elsewhere? Converting

Most new residents have a year after establishing Wyoming residency. CDL holders and drivers licensed in Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee or Wisconsin do not; they must switch on becoming residents. Either way, apply in person and hand in your old license.

The examiner looks you up in the national Problem Driver Pointer System, and a suspension or revocation anywhere has to be cleared before Wyoming will license you. A valid out of state license can get the skills test waived. If yours lapsed two or more years ago, you take the written test.

After you are licensed

Moving house? WYDOT needs to know within 10 days; use oneWYO or the Notice of Change of Address form. Drivers older than 21 can renew in the 120 days before their license expires, while drivers under 21 have a 90 day window.

Drivers with a qualifying record may renew by mail every second renewal. A license that lapses means applying in person again, and possibly retaking every part of the exam.

Check your insurance before you ever drive alone. Wyoming's minimum is $25,000 for one person's injuries, $50,000 for all injuries in a crash and $20,000 for property damage, and it applies to the car you test in as well as afterward. Insurers are not required by law to discount a new adult driver who takes a course, so ask your agent whether a class would change your premium before enrolling.

Wyoming adult drivers ed: common questions

Do adults in Wyoming need a learner's permit first?

If you have never held a license, yes. After passing the written and vision tests you hold the permit 10 days or more, then take the skills test.

What does a first Wyoming license cost?

WYDOT lists $45 for a Class C license as of October 2026, and the same $45 for a permit. Ask at the exam office which charges your visit involves.

Can I use a rental car for the road test?

The car must be licensed, registered, insured and roadworthy. Check that your rental contract permits a road test and keep the insurance papers in the vehicle.

Will Wyoming accept my out of state license without new tests?

Usually yes for the road test: a valid out of state license typically gets the skills test waived, and you take a vision screening. If your license lapsed two or more years ago, you also take the written test.

How long until my card arrives?

WYDOT mails it, and it normally arrives four to six weeks after issuance.

I am on active duty. Do I need a Wyoming license?

No. Service members and their dependents can keep their home state license. A member who does get a Wyoming license can have its expiration date waived while on active duty.

How soon do I report a new address?

Within 10 days of moving, through oneWYO or on the Notice of Change of Address form.
