California · Getting Your First License as an Adult

Your First California License at 18 or Older

This page is for adults in California who have never held a license here, from first time drivers to people who just arrived from another state. The first decision is which kind of license to ask for, because that sets your document list. No course is required once you are 18. You start an application online, take your documents to a DMV office, pay $46, pass the eye exam and the knowledge test, practice on the permit beside a licensed adult, and finally pass the road test. If you have just moved in, the switch is due within 10 days.

Step by step

  1. Pick your format first

Go with REAL ID if you want your license to get you onto domestic flights, a federal noncompliant license if that does not matter, or AB 60 if you cannot document lawful presence. Your choice determines the paperwork.

  2. Start online, then book a visit

Fill in the license and ID card application at dmv.ca.gov. If you own a computer with a webcam, choose the online knowledge test.

  3. Bring documents and pay in person

Carry identity, residency and Social Security documents. At the office you pay $46, read the eye chart, and give a thumbprint and photo.

  4. Pass the written test

Score 80 percent or more, online or in the office before 4:30 p.m. The instruction permit follows.

  5. Practice, then take the road test

Drive with a California licensed adult aged 18 or above, then book the road test in a safe, insured car. Pass, and an interim license covers you until the card arrives by mail.

Decision one: which kind of license

REAL ID cards carry a star and count as federal identification at airport checkpoints and in secure federal buildings. Enforcement began in May 2025, so anyone flying within the country without one needs a passport or some other accepted document.

The federal noncompliant license lets you drive just the same but lacks federal status, and some people prefer it because the document list is shorter. AB 60 is the option for residents unable to document lawful presence: fully legal for driving in California, not usable for federal purposes.

Whichever you choose, the tests and the fee are the same. Only the paperwork differs, and the DMV posts a separate checklist for each format.

Before the visit: building your document folder

Every format needs proof of identity, proof that you live in California, and your Social Security number. If your name appears differently on any of them, add the document showing the change. The handbook generally asks for two residency documents, with exceptions.

REAL ID applicants need identity papers that are originals or certified copies, for instance a permanent resident card, a certified birth certificate or a U.S. passport. Uploading them with the online application lets staff spot a missing item before your visit.

  • Identity: a passport, a certified birth certificate or something similar
  • Two California address documents, such as a lease, a mortgage statement or a utility bill
  • Your Social Security number (some applicants are exempt)
  • Paperwork linking different names, if needed

At the office and after: the tests in order

The eye exam comes first. Glasses mean a corrective lens restriction on the license; if you do not pass, your own eye doctor completes form DL 62 for the DMV. Next is the knowledge test, multiple choice, 80 percent to pass, three tries per application.

The road test needs an appointment and opens with a check of your car's equipment. Have insurance and registration ready; nobody rides along except the examiner. If you fail three road tests, you reapply and pay the fee again.

For example, someone who applies in February, passes the written test the same day, and practices a few evenings a week could reasonably book a road test in April. Adults have no minimum waiting period, so skill is the only clock.

Before you practice: insurance

California requires every driver to be financially responsible. As of October 2026, the floor the DMV publishes is $15,000 of property damage cover plus $30,000 per injured or killed person, capped at $60,000 when several people are involved.

Practicing in a friend's or relative's car? Check that their policy covers a permit holder. Take the insurance card to the road test, because the examiner asks for it.

If you are moving from another state

Once you are a resident, you have 10 days to get a California license. The DMV links residency to things like voting here, paying in state tuition or claiming the homeowner's exemption. Visitors over 18 can use a valid home state license for as long as it remains valid.

Expect a written test (online is fine) and bring the license your old state issued. Ask the DMV whether you will face a road test as well. Drivers carrying a valid license from another country must, per the DMV, arrange a companion to drive them to and from the road test.

If you need a bigger vehicle: noncommercial Class A and B

A standard Class C covers passenger cars, pickups and most small motorhomes. Pulling a heavy trailer or driving a big motorhome can push you into a noncommercial Class A or B.

As of October 2026 the noncommercial Class A or B also costs $46. Check the handbook's size and weight cutoffs before committing to a rig.

California adult drivers ed: common questions

At 18, do I still need driver ed in California?

No. Get the permit, practice beside a licensed adult, and pass the two tests; lessons are optional.

What does a first California license cost an adult?

Forty six dollars for the original Class C as of October 2026, plus $9 per road test retake.

Is REAL ID worth getting?

If you plan to fly within the U.S. on your license, yes. Since May 2025 a standard license alone will not get you through airport security unless you also carry something like a passport.

How long does the paper interim license last?

Up to 60 days. If the card has not arrived by then, contact the DMV.

I am moving from another state. Is there a written test?

Yes, the written test applies to newcomers, and you can do it online. Whether a road test is also required is a question for the DMV.

Can a rental car be used on the road test?

Yes, if you are named on the rental agreement and it does not exclude drive tests. The car still has to pass the equipment check.

What if I fail the eye exam?

Your eye doctor fills in a DL 62 for the DMV. Passing with glasses adds a corrective lens restriction to the card.
