North Dakota · Getting Your First License as an Adult

First North Dakota Driver's License for Adults

This page is for adults in North Dakota going for a first Class D license, or coming back after a long lapse. The decision in front of you is how much practice you need before booking the road test, because the state sets no minimum. You pass the knowledge and vision tests for a permit, practice, then pass the road test. As of October 2026 each test is $5 at an office (the knowledge test is $10 online) and the license $15, and every office visit is by appointment.

Step by step

  1. Get on the calendar

Every driver license service in North Dakota needs an appointment. Schedule online or by phone at 855-633-6835.

  2. Clear the knowledge test

Test at home through nd.knowtodrive.com for $10 an attempt, or at the site for $5, one attempt a day.

  3. Leave with the permit

Hand over your identity, Social Security and address papers, read the eye chart and pay $15.

  4. Put in the practice

Drive with a supervisor who is licensed for the vehicle, at least 18 and three years experienced, seated beside you.

  5. Pass the drive

Arrive in a car that is registered, insured and in good working order, pay the $5 test fee, and if you pass you leave with a Class D license.

Before you start: how short the adult path is

For applicants 18 and up, NDDOT's age chart has only two items: practice on a permit with a supervisor, then pass the road test. You will not be asked for a course certificate or a practice log.

Nor is there a minimum time on the permit, so if you already drive well you can book the test as soon as an appointment opens up.

Example: you pass the knowledge test online on a Monday, pick up the permit at your appointment that Thursday, practice with your spouse over two weekends and book the road test for the third week. Nothing in state rules stops that pace if you are ready.

Before your appointment: the documents

One original or certified identity document is required. Accepted examples include a passport or passport card, a certified U.S. birth certificate, a permanent resident card, a naturalization certificate, or a temporary status document like an employment authorization card. Photocopies and hospital certificates are refused.

For Social Security, bring something that shows all nine digits. For address, bring two recent items that show where you physically live in North Dakota; bank statements, leases, utility bills, insurance policies and property tax statements all work. A post office box does not qualify.

If you have changed your name since that document was issued, the link is a certified marriage certificate, an adoption document or a court order with the court's seal.

On test day: the car and the drive

You supply the vehicle, with current registration and proof of insurance. Before you pull out, the examiner walks around the car checking the horn, mirrors, doors, seat belts, wipers and windshield, the exhaust, the turn signals, the brake lights and taillights, both headlight beams and the brakes.

Self-parking must be off. No passengers, pets or phones ride with you. The examiner wants to see you follow directions, hold your lane, signal correctly, parallel park, sit with good posture and obey every sign and law. If it goes badly, you come back another day.

If you are moving here with a license

Licensing residency starts after 90 days in a row living here. Tourists, nonresident students and nonresident service members are exceptions. Once you are a resident, a valid license from your old state lasts 60 more days, or 30 if it is a commercial license.

Bring your newest license. It cannot be suspended, cancelled, revoked or more than a year past expiration. Bring the usual identity, Social Security and address proofs and $15. According to the manual, new residents sit whatever tests are necessary; a phone call to 855-633-6835 beforehand tells you which.

If you are a North Dakota resident on active military duty out of state, your valid license stays good until 30 days after you are discharged or separated.

After you are licensed: renewals, lapses and replacements

You may renew up to 10 months early without losing time on the current license, and some drivers qualify to renew online. Renewing in person always includes a vision screening.

Let a license lapse for more than a year and you retest, which puts a returning resident back on the first license path described here. As of October 2026 a replacement is $8, or $3 if you are only changing your name or address.

When paying for lessons makes sense

No course is required, but an NDDOT approved driver training school is worth a few hours if you learned abroad or have never handled gravel or snow. Some schools on NDDOT's list are part of the road test waiver program.

Once licensed, you can also earn an insurance break. Insurers must, by state law, lower premiums for drivers who finish an accident prevention course carrying State Highway Patrol approval. The discount lasts at least two years, or three at 55 and older.

North Dakota adult drivers ed: common questions

Do I still need a permit if I am over 18?

Yes, the permit tests come first, but there is no minimum time on it. Book the road test when you feel ready.

What does a first license cost in North Dakota?

In October 2026: $5 each time you sit the knowledge test at an office ($10 online), $5 for the road test and $15 for the card.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

No. NDDOT requires an appointment for every service, including picking up a permit after testing online.

How long does my old state's license stay valid here?

Sixty days from the point you become a resident, and residency begins once you have lived here 90 days straight. Commercial licenses get 30.

My license has been expired for over a year. Can I still transfer it?

You retest. An out-of-state license that far past expiration cannot be transferred either.

My car has self-parking. Can I use it for the test?

Only with the self-parking feature switched off. Otherwise bring a different car.

How much is a replacement card?

As of October 2026, $8, or $3 when only the name or address is changing.
