Lowering Your Oklahoma Point Total: A Practical Guide
This page is for an Oklahoma driver who has pulled their record, seen the number, and wants to know how close they are to trouble and what can bring it down. The danger line is 10 points accumulated inside five years; cross it and Service Oklahoma suspends you. A typical ticket is worth 2. You have two ways down. One is a 6-hour state approved class, which subtracts 2 and can be repeated only after 24 months. The other is simply staying clean: every ticket-free year subtracts 2, and three in a row wipe the total.

Step by step
Get your record
A three year record costs $25 from Service Oklahoma. Write down your total and the date of every conviction, then cross off anything older than five years, since only the last five count.
Check when you last used the course
If you have not taken credit in the past 24 months, you can earn 2 points off. Find the date of any earlier course before paying for another.
Pick a school from the approved list
Choose from the defensive driving schools Service Oklahoma lists online. A safety class through your job will not count for points.
Finish all 6 hours
Sit through the full class and file the certificate. Before you leave, find out how the school sends completions to the state.
Verify the credit
Check your record again a few weeks later. Totals cannot drop below zero, so a course taken on a clean record earns no state credit.
Start here: how the Mandatory Point System counts
You start with a blank record. Points arrive with convictions for offenses on the state's schedule, and it makes no difference where you were convicted: per the Driver Manual, a conviction from any court with authority over the offense counts, in Oklahoma or elsewhere.
The number that matters is your rolling five year sum. Let it reach 10 and Service Oklahoma suspends the license, even when every ticket behind it was minor.
Point values for the tickets people actually get
The manual groups offenses by risk. A short list of the most dangerous carry 4 points, serious speeding carries 3, and most everyday moving violations carry 2. Anything not listed, apart from offenses that bring automatic suspension or revocation, is 1 point.
Worked example: a careless driving conviction (2), a red light (2) and a 30 mph over speeding ticket (3) within two years leave you at 7. One more ordinary ticket puts you at 9, one step from the line.
- 4 points: reckless driving, or passing a school bus that has stopped to load or unload children
- 3 points: going faster than 25 mph above the posted limit
- 2 points: ordinary speeding, careless driving or tailgating
- 2 points: ignoring a red light or stop sign, not yielding, crossing the center line, going the wrong way down a one way street
- 2 points: breaking a restriction on your license
- 1 point: an unsafe or defective vehicle, plus any pointable offense not listed above
If you reach 10: how long the suspension lasts
Each time it happens, the penalty grows. Your first points suspension runs a month. A second runs three months and a third runs six. From the fourth on, each lasts a year. When the time is up you still owe the reinstatement fee set by statute, and some drivers are also called in to see a Driver Compliance Hearing Officer.
If you have no realistic way to get to your job or other necessities, ask Service Oklahoma about a modified driver license for the length of a points suspension. DUI-related cases are excluded from that option.
Offenses that skip the point count entirely
A handful of convictions bypass points and go straight to revocation, for terms ranging from 6 months to 3 years. The manual's list includes causing a death with a vehicle (manslaughter or negligent homicide), DUI, a felony committed with a vehicle, fleeing a crash where someone was hurt or killed, and lying under oath on a license application.
Anyone under 21 caught driving with alcohol in their system, in any measurable amount, also faces revocation. A points class is useless in these situations. DUI cases follow their own path through the Impaired Driver Accountability Program.
Letting time do the work
The quiet way down is a clean calendar. For each full year with no pointable conviction, Service Oklahoma subtracts 2, and once you string together three years with no traffic conviction at all, your total is wiped.
In practice, one 2 point ticket disappears after twelve quiet months on its own. Save the class for the moment you are near 10 and the calendar is too slow.
Using the course credit
The class you want is one Service Oklahoma approves as a driver compliance or defensive driving course; the agency puts it at 6 hours. Completing it subtracts 2 points. After that you must wait 24 months to use the credit again, and your total cannot go negative.
Safety classes offered through an employer, officially called Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Courses, will not touch your Oklahoma points. Service Oklahoma still recommends mentioning one to your insurer, because some carriers discount premiums for it.
If the driver is a teen
Under 18, every Oklahoma license is probationary, and a single moving violation can be enough for Service Oklahoma to cancel or suspend it; the 10 point rule is not the limit for teens. A conviction also stops a teen from advancing to the next license stage for 6 months from the conviction.
Oklahoma defensive driving: common questions
How many points cause a suspension in Oklahoma?
Ten or more within five years. A first points suspension is 1 month, and a fourth or later one is 12 months.
When do Oklahoma points come off?
Every clean year (12 months with no pointable conviction) subtracts 2. Three years in a row without a traffic conviction resets you to zero.
How much does a defensive driving course take off?
Two points. You can claim that once every 24 months, using a 6-hour class Service Oklahoma approves.
What does reckless driving cost in points?
Four. Passing a school bus while it is stopped for children is also 4.
Where can I see my current points?
Buy a copy of your record from Service Oklahoma. The three year version is $25 as of October 2026.
Is a course worth it if I have no points?
Not for your record, since the total cannot go below zero. Ask your insurer whether it offers a discount instead.
Can my teen lose a license before reaching 10 points?
Yes. A license held before 18 is probationary, and Service Oklahoma can cancel or suspend it after a single moving violation.
