How to Pass the Oklahoma Permit Test the First Time

This page is for an Oklahoma teen, or an adult, about to sit the Class D knowledge test, and the parent wondering whether to let them do it from the kitchen table. The test is 20 multiple choice questions taken from the Oklahoma Driver Manual, and you pass with 15. You can test at home on a webcam computer from age 14, or at a Service Oklahoma or Licensed Operator location. Sitting the test costs nothing, but every failure adds $4 to the bill you pay when the permit is issued, as of October 2026.

Step by step

  1. Get this year's manual

Go to the Driver Study Hub on Service Oklahoma's site and save the current manual. Questions track the 2026 edition, so an older printed copy can mislead you.

  2. Use the official practice test

On that same hub is a free practice exam, also 20 questions and laid out like the real thing. Keep taking it until you pass comfortably, and go back to the manual for every question you miss.

  3. Choose home or office

To test from home you need a computer (not a tablet or phone) with a camera facing you and a working mic, somewhere quiet, and if you are a minor, a parent or guardian in the room. Need the questions read to you, or lack the equipment? Book an office test instead.

  4. Take the test

You have an hour for 20 questions and see your score immediately. If it does not go well, wait at least a day, review, and go again.

  5. Apply for the permit

Head to an office or a licensed operator (tag agent) with your main ID, your Social Security number, course paperwork if you have it, and a parent if you are a minor. Eyes get checked there, and you pay the permit fee plus $4 per failed attempt.

Before you study: who takes this test

Every first-time Class D applicant sits it, from a 15 year old in a school course to a 40 year old who never learned to drive. You do not have to wait for permit age to take it. Remote testing opens on your 14th birthday, or six months sooner for kids who live or work on a farm. Get it done early and the knowledge part is already behind you when your permit date arrives.

The testing page lists one thing that blocks you: a license currently suspended in Oklahoma or any other state. Adults test under the same rules but can skip the permit and go straight to the road test. If an adult decides to get a permit for practice, it has to be held 30 days before the license application.

Study plan: what the 20 questions cover

Everything on the exam is drawn from the manual itself: state road law, good driving habits, and what alcohol and drugs do to you and what the law says about them. The manual also suggests learning your own town's traffic ordinances, and your local police can fill you in. For a final review, the shorter official guide on the Study Hub, Overview of Oklahoma Driver License, is a good last read.

If time is short, put most of it into seven chapters of the 2026 manual: the one on signs, signals and pavement markings, plus right-of-way, the basic speed rule, stopping and following distance, parking, sharing the road, and alcohol and drugs. Skim the license chapters at the front as well. They describe the stages, hours and limits your teen is about to live with.

A realistic schedule for a teen: one chapter a night for two weeks, then the practice test every other day in the third week. If your teen is still missing right-of-way questions by then, spend the extra night there before booking.

  • Signs: shapes and colors, railroad crossings, work zones, lane control signals
  • Who yields: at intersections, to funerals, to a pedestrian with a white cane or guide dog, near children playing
  • Speed, stopping distance, and following distance on wet or icy roads
  • Parking: hills, parallel parking, places you may not park
  • Sharing the road: 3 feet when passing a cyclist, plus trucks, trains and motorcycles
  • Zero tolerance for drivers under 21 and implied consent

On test day at home: how the online version works

A private company runs remote testing for Service Oklahoma, and there is no added fee. After signing up for Class D and agreeing to the rules, the system snaps two pictures of you, a camera check and a reference shot it compares you against while you work. Changing your look mid-test, such as slipping on glasses or resting your chin in your hand over your face, can set off that check, so keep your starting position.

Phones and tablets will not work, so plan on a real computer with a camera pointed at you and a mic that works. For a minor, a parent or guardian has to be there to confirm identity; the system calls that adult the proxy. A dropped connection freezes the clock, and you can rejoin as long as the hour has not run out, though several drops in a row may mean starting over. Test on your most dependable internet.

On test day in person: oral tests and accommodations

Office testing is available both at Service Oklahoma sites and at licensed operators (what most Oklahomans call the tag agent). Carry your birth certificate or state ID. Two failed remote attempts send you here, and so does needing to hear the questions: the manual offers an oral version to anyone who asks, sometimes by appointment only.

As of October 2026 the online test is English only. If reading English is the real obstacle rather than road knowledge, call the office before booking and ask about the oral option and any other accommodation so the right examiner is scheduled.

If you fail: retakes and the $4 charge

State law, as the manual describes it, requires at least one day between a failed attempt and the next, and Service Oklahoma's own advice is simply to try again tomorrow. There is no limit on total attempts, but only two can be online; every attempt after the second online fail is in person.

Nothing is charged at the time. Instead, every failed try is logged as a $4 debt, settled on the day the permit is printed, together with the $42.50 permit price (October 2026). Three fails before a pass adds $12, for $54.50 at the counter.

After you pass: the counter visit

Passing earns you a trip to an office, not a permit. The examiner there checks your eyes and your papers. Pack your main ID, your Social Security number, course enrollment or completion proof if you have it, any documents covering a name change or immigration status, and a parent or legal guardian for minors. Want REAL ID? Add a second residency document.

If the eye check shows you need glasses or contacts, the permit will carry a corrective lens restriction. Wear or bring them so the screening reflects how you will actually drive.

Oklahoma teen drivers ed: common questions

How many questions are on the Oklahoma knowledge test, and what passes?

Twenty multiple choice questions, and 15 correct is a pass. Online, you have an hour.

Can my teen take the permit test at home?

Yes, on a laptop or desktop with a camera and microphone. A parent or guardian must be present for the identity check if your teen is under 18, and after two online fails the next attempt is in person.

What is the youngest age to sit the test?

Fourteen, or 13 and a half for teens who live or work on a farm. The permit itself still waits until 15 with drivers ed or 16 without.

Is there an official practice test?

Yes, and it is free. Look on Service Oklahoma's Driver Study Hub for a 20 question practice exam and a study guide you can download.

What happens after a failed attempt?

Wait at least a day before trying again. Each fail adds $4 to the fees collected when the permit is issued, and two online fails move you to in-person testing.

Can I take the test in Spanish?

Not online; as of October 2026 the remote test is English only. Ask an office about the oral version the manual mentions and what language help it can arrange.

Do adults have to take the knowledge test?

Yes. Every first-time Class D applicant passes the knowledge and vision tests, then adults can go straight to the road test without a permit.

What should my teen study first?

Signs and right-of-way, then speed and following distance. Those chapters carry the most testable rules in the 2026 manual.
