Oklahoma Defensive Driving Courses and Your Driving Record

Can reduce points

This page is for Oklahoma drivers who just got a ticket or are watching their point total creep up. The decision in front of you is whether a class will help, and the answer is yes, in one narrow way. Six hours in an approved driver improvement or defensive driving class earns a 2 point deduction, and you can claim it once per 24 months. The ticket itself stays put. Making a case go away is the job of whichever court has it, and a few cities, Oklahoma City among them, run their own driving school for exactly that.

Step by step

  1. Start with the court on your ticket

Pull out the citation. Note which court is listed, the case number, and your deadline to appear or pay. Whether a class can do anything for this ticket is that court's call.

  2. Call before you pay

Phone the clerk ahead of your date and ask whether driving school or deferral is offered for your charge. If you pay first, you have generally been convicted, and the option is gone.

  3. Sign up for a course that will count

When the court has a program, take whatever class it names. When you only want the 2 point credit on your state record, choose from the defensive driving schools approved by the Department of Public Safety, which Service Oklahoma lists.

  4. Sit the full 6 hours

Finish every hour and guard the original certificate. Courts commonly want that original in hand by a fixed date.

  5. Hand in proof by the deadline

Get the certificate to the court in time, or follow the school's directions if you are after point credit. A blown deadline can turn into a conviction that is sent to Service Oklahoma.

  6. Confirm the result on your record

Buy a copy of your record from Service Oklahoma ($25 for three years as of October 2026) and look for two things: how the case ended and whether the 2 points came off.

First question: will a course make my ticket go away?

Not by itself. A state approved class changes your point total by 2; it does nothing to the citation. Dismissal belongs to the court, and courts differ on whether they offer anything at all.

Oklahoma City Municipal Court is the clearest example. The program is open to drivers holding a valid license who have just one eligible active violation and have not gone through it within three years. You enter a plea of guilty or no contest, fill in an enrollment form, and pay. Get the original certificate back to the court before the deadline and the case is dismissed.

Before you act: how points pile up in Oklahoma

Convictions for most moving violations, and a few other offenses, put points on your Service Oklahoma record. Hit 10 inside any five year window and you lose your license for a while.

The penalty grows each time it happens. Suspension number one is a month. Number two is 3 months, number three is 6, and from the fourth on it is a full year. Even after the time is served, there is a statutory reinstatement fee to pay before you drive again.

The calendar also helps. A year with no pointable conviction subtracts 2 points automatically, and a three year clean run wipes the slate to zero.

  • Suspension trigger: 10 points within any 5 years
  • Suspension length: 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, then 1 year each time after
  • Automatic deduction: 2 points per clean year
  • Full reset: three clean years in a row

What the 2 point course credit looks like

Service Oklahoma frames these as 6-hour classes built to correct careless habits. Pass one from the approved list and 2 points come off, but the credit is good only once in any two year period.

The approved list sits on Service Oklahoma's drive schools page, sorted by city with phone numbers. When you call, ask two questions: how does the school report completions so the credit actually posts, and can the class be taken online?

A worked example helps. Suppose you are sitting on 8 points and a May speeding conviction adds 2, landing you on 10. If you have not claimed course credit in the last 24 months, finishing an approved class drops you to 8 right away instead of waiting out a clean year.

Point values for everyday tickets

Oklahoma's Driver Manual assigns each offense a point value that applies no matter which court convicted you. The bulk of ordinary tickets cost 2 points each, which means five run-of-the-mill convictions over five years can put you on the suspension line.

  • 4 points: reckless driving
  • 4 points: going past a school bus while it loads or unloads
  • 3 points: more than 25 mph over the posted speed
  • 2 points: other speeding, careless driving, or tailgating
  • 2 points: running a red light or stop sign, failing to yield, crossing the center line or driving the wrong way
  • 2 points: driving outside your license restrictions
  • 1 point: an unsafe vehicle, and most remaining moving violations

Courses and situations that earn no credit

An employer's Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Course will not lower your Oklahoma points. Service Oklahoma does mention that your insurer might reward it with a discount. Taking two approved classes in the same 24 months gets you nothing extra.

If you drive commercially, read this twice. The Oklahoma City court says it reports every ticket involving a CDL holder or a commercial vehicle to Service Oklahoma because the law requires it. Its driving school cannot shield those tickets.

Before your court date: paying or contesting

Where your case lands depends on the officer. A ticket from city police goes to that city's municipal court. Tickets from troopers or sheriff's deputies normally go to district court in the county where you were stopped. In Oklahoma City, paying over the phone counts as pleading no contest, and the result is a conviction on your state record.

To dispute the charge, use the instructions printed on the citation and get your case set on the docket ahead of your date. Tulsa's municipal court, as one example, takes add-ons to the docket between 8 and 9 a.m. on regular session days and gives you 10 days to appeal a conviction.

Whatever you choose, do not let the date pass. Tulsa cautions that a missed appearance or unpaid fine can lead to a warrant for failure to appear or for costs, and cases handed to collectors can carry an extra charge as high as 35 percent.

If your ticket is in Oklahoma City

The city charges two $50 fees for its program, one administrative and one for driving school, for $100 total, with court costs on top. All of it is due when you enroll (October 2026 figures). A suspended license disqualifies you, and some violations are excluded, so phone (405) 297-3898 and ask about yours.

Enrollment runs through the court's online eligibility form. Drivers under 18 need a parent, guardian or attorney to sign. Wait for the court's instructions before paying anything on the case, and treat the completion date as fixed: if the certificate is late, a conviction goes on your record and is sent to Service Oklahoma.

If your ticket is anywhere else

Oklahoma City's rules apply to Oklahoma City cases only. Every other city and every county sets its own fees and decides which tickets qualify, if any do. Ask the court on your citation before you count on a class.

If that court offers nothing, you can still take the state course after you are convicted and collect the 2 point credit, provided you have not used it within the past 24 months.

If you are already suspended or facing a DUI

During a points suspension, Service Oklahoma may grant a modified driver license, a limited Class D privilege meant for people who have no other reasonable way to get around. The agency can restrict the hours, places and reasons you drive. Its suspensions hub rules out modified licenses for anything DUI related.

DUI is handled separately. For arrests on or after November 1, 2022, you must complete the Impaired Driver Accountability Program, IDAP, before reinstatement, and no defensive driving class substitutes for it.

Insurance after a course

Do not assume a premium cut. The state makes no promise about insurance, and each carrier decides its own discounts. Service Oklahoma even notes that some insurers reward accident prevention classes that never touch your points. Call your agent first, and file the certificate somewhere safe.

If you hold a CDL: the federal masking rule

Under 49 CFR 384.226, no state may mask, defer or divert a traffic conviction to keep it off the record of someone with a CDL or a commercial learner permit. It does not matter whether you were driving a rig or your personal car. Parking, weight and equipment defect violations are the only carve-outs.

The upshot: a program that clears an ordinary driver's ticket will not clear yours. The 2 point state course is still open to you, but employers will still see the conviction.

Oklahoma defensive driving: common questions

How many points will a defensive driving course take off my Oklahoma record?

Two. That is the credit for an approved driver improvement or defensive driving class, and you can use it only once in 24 months.

Is there traffic school in Oklahoma that dismisses tickets?

Only if your court runs one. There is no statewide version. Oklahoma City Municipal Court is one court that dismisses a qualifying case after you finish its driving school by the deadline.

At how many points does Oklahoma suspend a license?

Ten, counted over any five year period. A first points suspension is one month long.

How long does the Oklahoma defensive driving class take?

Six hours, according to Service Oklahoma. Pick a school from the approved list on its drive schools page.

Do points ever come off by themselves?

Yes. Each 12 months without a pointable conviction removes 2, and three clean years in a row bring you to zero. A course adds another 2 point deduction once every 24 months.

My employer runs a safety class. Does it reduce my points?

No. Employer accident prevention courses do not count toward points, though your insurer might still offer a discount for one.

I have a CDL. Can I use Oklahoma City's driving school?

Expect not. The court reports CDL holder and commercial vehicle tickets to Service Oklahoma because the law requires it. Phone the court before enrolling.

What if I miss the Oklahoma City driving school deadline?

You are convicted. The court sends the conviction to Service Oklahoma and tells the city prosecutor, so get the original certificate in early.

How many points is a speeding ticket in Oklahoma?

Usually 2. Going more than 25 mph over the limit raises it to 3, per the point table in the Driver Manual.

If I just pay my ticket, is that a conviction?

In most cases, yes. In Oklahoma City a phone payment is treated as a no contest plea and becomes a conviction on your state record, so ask about driving school first.

How do I check whether my 2 point credit posted?

Wait a few weeks after the class, then buy your record from Service Oklahoma. A three year record is $25 as of October 2026.
