Behind the Wheel in Oklahoma: Planning Your Teen's Practice
This page is for the Oklahoma parent who has just become a driving coach. Your job between the permit and the road test is to rack up a minimum of 50 supervised hours, including 10 after dark. Whoever rides along must be licensed, at least 21, and licensed for 2 years or more. If you chose a parent-taught program, the target rises to 55 hours. There is no logbook to hand in. Instead you sign the Affidavit of Driver Training, which means the honesty of those hours rests with you.

Step by step
Before the permit, use an instructor
Pre-permit driving needs a certified instructor, someone employed by a school (public, private, parochial) or a commercial driving business. Mom and Dad sit this stage out.
After the permit, bring in the family
With the permit in hand, family takes over: you, or any licensed adult old enough and experienced enough to qualify. The permit stays in the car on every drive.
Keep a notebook even though nobody asks for it
Write down the date, start and finish times, weather and road conditions, and who supervised. Service Oklahoma will not look at it, but it is what lets you sign the affidavit truthfully.
Get the night hours done in winter
Ten hours must be in darkness, and permit driving ends at 10 p.m. Early sunsets in November through February make night practice easy to fit in.
Rehearse every graded skill
Hill parking, parallel parking, reversing, lane changes and signals all appear on the road test. Add highway merging and rain so test day is not the first time.
Sign off and pack for test day
Once the 50 are in, fill out the parent sign-off form (Service Oklahoma calls it the 50-Hour Driver Training Sign-off) and put it in the test day folder next to the Work Zone Safe certificate.
Before the first drive: who is allowed in the passenger seat
It depends on the stage. Ahead of the permit, only a certified instructor may ride along, and that instructor has to work for a school program or a commercial driving business. Service Oklahoma is explicit that parents do not qualify yet.
After the permit, any licensed adult of 21 or more can ride along. For the 50 hours that count, though, that adult also needs 2 or more years of licensed driving. An older brother or sister who only recently got a license may fall short.
During the permit months: 50 hours and the dark
Service Oklahoma sets 50 hours as the minimum before the intermediate road test, and 10 must be at night. Because permit driving is allowed only from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., night practice has to happen in the early evening or before dawn.
Treat 50 as a floor. Spread across the full 180 day permit period, it works out to roughly two hours a week, which leaves room for bad weather, highway runs and parking drills rather than circling the same neighborhood block.
Picture a teen who gets the permit in early October. Fall evenings get dark around 6:30, so two weeknight drives of 45 minutes each through December can cover the 10 night hours before spring, leaving weekends for longer daytime trips.
If you chose parent-taught: 30 plus 55
The parent-taught program asks for more than the general rule. According to the Oklahoma Driver Manual, students complete 30 classroom hours and 55 hours of actual driving, and an approved provider builds those hours into its course.
The teaching parent has to pass a record check. Expect Service Oklahoma to look for a current, valid license, a year free of any suspension, cancellation, revocation, denial or alcohol and drug conviction, no ticket still pending, a total of point violations under 5, and no history of administrative action or the IDAP program.
Order matters here. The online application comes first, then the email with your approval number, and only then the provider's course materials. The old paper form is gone. If the number is slow to arrive, write to [email protected].
If you hire professionals: school lessons
A school or commercial course puts your teen in the car with a certified teacher for part of the program. How many hours that is varies, since the state's family pages give no standard number. Before you sign, get each school to tell you the in-car hours and whether you may count them toward the 50.
The approved school list is sorted by city and marks which schools also act as designated examiners for the road test. Testing with a school examiner carries a fee; testing at a Service Oklahoma office does not.
At the end: why there is no log to turn in
Families used to be told to submit a driving log. That is no longer the case. The state no longer takes logs at all. What it wants is your signature on the training affidavit, swearing that the 50 hours, night hours included, really happened.
Keep your own record anyway. It shows you which skills are still thin, and it gives you something concrete if anyone ever questions the hours you signed for.
The week before the road test: the car
Most teens test in the family car they learned on, and the examiner looks it over before the drive starts. That means a current tag, proof of insurance and working equipment. No pets and no extra riders are allowed during the test.
Service Oklahoma posts a Road-Ready Checklist for test vehicles on its driver education page. Go through it a week early so a burned-out brake light does not cost you the appointment.
While you practice: insurance
Every Oklahoma driver needs liability coverage of at least 25/50/25. When the permit is issued, call your insurer to confirm your teen is covered while practicing and ask what will change once the intermediate license arrives.
Oklahoma teen drivers ed: common questions
How many practice hours does an Oklahoma teen need?
At least 50 supervised hours, 10 of them at night, before the intermediate road test. Parent-taught students complete 55 hours behind the wheel.
Can my 21 year old nephew supervise practice?
He can supervise any permit driving, but for the 50 counted hours he also needs to have been licensed for at least 2 years.
Do we have to hand in a driving log?
No. Service Oklahoma does not take logs. A parent signs the Affidavit of Driver Training confirming the 50 hours and the 10 at night.
Can I teach my 15 year old to drive before the permit?
No. Until the permit is issued, supervision is limited to certified instructors. Being the parent-taught teacher does not change that.
Where is the Affidavit of Driver Training?
Look on Service Oklahoma's driver education page for the 50-Hour Driver Training Sign-off. It is a PDF you can fill in on screen.
Will driving school lessons count toward the 50 hours?
Ask the school. Service Oklahoma does not explain how school in-car hours relate to the affidavit, so confirm before you count them.
When should we fit in the night hours?
Early. Permit driving stops at 10 p.m., so winter evenings, when it gets dark early, make the 10 night hours much easier to collect.
