Wyoming Driver Licensing for Adults, Start to Finish
Optional
This page is for adults in Wyoming who have never had a license, and for people moving here with one. The question is usually whether a course is required. It is not. A first time driver passes a written test and a vision screening, then practices on a learner's permit, with a licensed passenger older than 18 along, for 10 days or more. After that comes a skills test in your own car. New residents get a year to switch to a Wyoming license, but drivers from a handful of states must switch immediately.

Step by step
Assemble REAL ID paperwork
You need one identity document, two recent documents (roughly the last 30 to 45 days) showing your Wyoming address, and Social Security proof. If your name has changed, add the marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order.
Open your application on oneWYO
Start online, then go to a driver exam office in person with the documents on WYDOT's requirements list.
Take the written test and eye check
Expect an automated test built on the Rules of the Road manual, Wyoming law and seat belt use. If you fail, you may retake that test, but no more than twice in one day.
Collect your learner's permit
It costs $45 as of October 2026. Until you are licensed, drive only with a licensed passenger older than 18 in the front seat.
Practice for 10 days or longer
Ten days is the minimum before you can apply for full privileges. Adults have no required practice hours, so judge readiness honestly.
Bring your car to the skills test
It has to be registered, insured and in good working order. Certain stations only test by appointment, booked on oneWYO or by phone.
Watch the mailbox
Wyoming mails license cards, and they take about four to six weeks. If the card should go elsewhere, file a Forwarding Request form.
Before you start: do you need a course?
No. Wyoming's driver education rules are written around minors. The Department of Education's Chapter 39 programs are for students under 21 earning a first license. An adult's route is simpler: pass the permit tests, practice, then sit the skills test.
The legal wait is only 10 days, so for most adults the real limit is how quickly they become comfortable behind the wheel. If nobody is available to supervise you, paid lessons fill that gap.
Who has to sit the written test
WYDOT gives the written test to two groups: people who have never been licensed, in Wyoming or anywhere else, and people whose license lapsed two or more years ago. The requirement to examine applicants comes from W.S. 31-7-114.
Tests are in English only. For non-commercial written tests you may use an interpreter, and if reading is a struggle, an oral option reads the questions to you over a phone system.
Driving on an adult learner's permit
The regular learner's permit is for anyone learning, adults included. It is valid for a year, with unlimited renewals. You need to have held it for 10 days or more before applying for full privileges.
Your supervisor sits up front, is older than 18 and is licensed for the class of vehicle you are in, or a higher one. The teen intermediate permit's limits on passengers and late driving do not apply to adults.
On test day: the skills test and your car
You bring the car, and it must pass inspection before the test. Make sure it is licensed, registered and insured, that the horn, lights, signals, wipers and mirrors work, that the driver and front passenger have seat belts, that every door opens from both inside and outside, and that no tire is frayed or bulging.
The examiner will take you through intersections, traffic lights and ordinary traffic. Fail, and the examiner sets your waiting period, typically according to how much more practice you appear to need.
Arriving from another state
Once Wyoming becomes your home, you have one year to get a Wyoming license. That grace period does not apply to CDL holders or to anyone licensed in Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee or Wisconsin; they must apply as soon as residency begins.
Go in person, turn in your old license and bring the documents WYDOT requires. The examiner checks you against the national PDPS database. If your privilege is suspended or revoked in any state, Wyoming will not license you until that is resolved.
If you already drive, the road test is usually skipped: per the manual, showing a valid license from another state can get the skills test waived. Military families get extra room, since people on active duty and their dependents do not have to switch at all. A member who does get a Wyoming license can ask for an "I" restriction, which waives the expiration date during active duty.
What it costs
WYDOT's fee list, as of October 2026: a new Class C license or permit is $45; renewing a Class C license is $35; a duplicate is $25; a copy of your driving record is $10. Bring cash, a check or a money order. Some stations accept cards for an added fee.
Do not count on an insurance break. Since July 1, 2021, Wyoming insurers are no longer required to discount drivers who complete an accident prevention course, so whether an adult class saves you money is your insurer's call. Ask first.
Paperwork and the vision screening
First time applicants need one identity document from WYDOT's list, for example a state certified birth certificate, a valid passport, a permanent resident card or a certificate of citizenship or naturalization. You also need two documents proving residence at a physical address (P.O. boxes do not count), and ideally proof of your Social Security number, which is recommended but optional. WYDOT specifically says Amazon packages are not acceptable proof of residence.
The vision screening happens at the counter. The manual's standard is 20/40 with both eyes and 120 degrees or more of combined field. If your acuity is between 20/40 and 20/100, expect to be asked to pass a skills test. Fail the screening and you will need an eye specialist to fill in WYDOT's Vision Evaluation form.
Wyoming adult drivers ed: common questions
I am 25 and have never driven. Do I need a course in Wyoming?
No. You pass the written test and vision screening, keep a learner's permit for at least 10 days and then take the skills test.
What is the shortest permit hold for adults?
Ten days before you can apply for full driving privileges.
Will I have to take the written test when I move my license to Wyoming?
That depends on your history. WYDOT gives the written test to anyone never licensed before and to anyone whose license lapsed two or more years ago. For unusual cases, call Driver Services at 307-777-4800.
How long do I have to switch after moving to Wyoming?
Normally one year after you establish residency. CDL holders and drivers licensed in Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee or Wisconsin must apply right away.
What does a Wyoming license cost?
As of October 2026, WYDOT charges $45 for a new Class C license or permit and $35 for a renewal.
Do I have to bring my own car to the road test?
Yes, and it must be in good working order, licensed, registered and insured. WYDOT does not supply cars.
Which documents prove who I am and where I live?
One identity document, two documents showing a physical Wyoming address, Social Security proof and, if your name changed, the paperwork for it. Begin on oneWYO and bring the originals to the exam office.
How good does my eyesight need to be?
With both eyes, 20/40 or better (glasses are fine) and a combined field of 120 degrees or more. Anyone between 20/40 and 20/100 also has to pass a skills test.
Can I take the written test in another language?
No, it is English only. You may bring an interpreter to a non commercial written test, though, and the oral option can read questions to you.
