Montana Drivers 18 and Older: Your First License

Optional

This page is for anyone 18 or older in Montana who has never held a license, or who has just moved here with one. Your main question is whether you need a course first. You do not. Montana's course, six month learner period and logged hours are all rules for minors. As an adult you clear an eye test and a written test at an MVD driver exam station, practice on a learner license for as long as you like, and then drive for an examiner.

Step by step

  1. Collect your papers

Three things to prove: lawful presence, who you are, and that you live in Montana. For identity alone, expect to show two documents.

  2. Book a slot

Reserve through the MVD website. Plenty of stations will not serve you without an appointment.

  3. Clear the vision and knowledge tests

The written part asks about signs and state driving law. A pass earns a learner license that lasts twelve months.

  4. Practice with someone licensed beside you

A licensed driver rides in the front passenger seat whenever you drive. You can test whenever you like.

  5. Drive the road test

Bring a vehicle that fits the license class you want. Pass, pay, and smile for the photo.

Before you start: no course required

Section 61-5-132, the law with the course and the six month wait, only governs applicants younger than 18. Adults meet the general requirements instead: show lawful presence, identity and Montana residency, pass the tests, hand in any license from elsewhere, and satisfy medical standards if they apply to you.

School traffic education takes students up to 19, so if you finished high school recently you might still get a seat. Ask your district. If not, a handful of paid lessons with a professional instructor is the usual way to get ready for the road test.

Getting ready: what to bring to the written test

Three kinds of proof come with you: who you are, that you live in Montana, and that you are lawfully present. The Social Security card is optional, but the number is not; the MVD checks it, and it compares the name and birthday you give against what Social Security holds.

Make the appointment online or by phoning Customer Care on 1 (406) 444-1772. There is also an online pre-apply form; fill it in at home and the counter visit moves faster.

At the station: the three tests

State law puts every first license applicant through three checks: eyesight, a written exam on road signs and Montana driving law, and an on-road skills test. For that last one, you supply a vehicle and confirm it matches the license class and type you are applying for.

Your study book is the Montana Driver Manual. Wear your glasses or contacts if you need them; the license will record it.

Between the tests: practicing on a learner license

Once the knowledge and vision tests are behind you, the MVD can issue a learner license good for one year. Carry it whenever you drive, and drive anything except a motorcycle only with a licensed driver seated next to you.

Teens have to wait six months on this license. You do not. Book the road test whenever you feel ready, and treat the year as practice time. If you are 30 and nervous on highways, for example, you can spend two months on quiet roads and still test the same season.

On road test day

Have the learner permit with you, plus the car's registration and insurance; a phone screen is fine for those. The car itself has to be in sound shape.

Examiners can refuse to start if the windshield is cracked or any brake light, taillight or blinker is out. Walk around the car the night before.

Paying for it: license fees by age

Montana bills by the number of years on the card. At ages 21 through 63, the October 2026 figure is $62.32 for twelve years, or $67.47 with REAL ID added.

Younger adults pay less because their card ends on the 21st birthday: $5.67 if you are 20, $10.82 if you are 19, $15.97 if you are 18.

If you just moved here

Once you have made Montana your permanent home, your current license from the old state carries you for 60 days in a row, no more. After that, hand it in and get a Montana one.

Under Section 61-5-110, if that license is current or has been expired under a year, you trade it for the matching Montana class by paying the fee and passing an eye exam. The MVD keeps the right to give you the written and driving tests too, if something gives it reason to doubt your driving.

Military members on active duty, and their dependents, can drive here on a valid out of state license; that changes only if they take paid work in Montana.

After you pass: two rules worth knowing

Montana is unusual about small speeding tickets. Section 61-8-725 says that on a basic highway limit, being 10 mph or less over in daylight, or 5 or less over after dark, is no crime, stays off your driving record, and cannot be held against you by your insurer, although you still pay the fine. It does not help above 90 mph, in special speed zones, for tickets sent in from other states, or for CDL holders.

As for a course: we found no Montana law requiring insurers to discount a new adult driver who takes one. The required discount comes later, at 55, for drivers who complete an approved highway traffic safety program. For now, the payoff of lessons is passing on the first attempt.

Montana adult drivers ed: common questions

Do I need to take driver education as an adult in Montana?

No. The course, the six month learner period and the logged hours apply only under 18. You pass the vision, knowledge and road tests.

Is a learner license required before my road test?

Montana sets no holding period for adults. The one year learner license simply lets you practice with a licensed driver beside you.

I just moved here. How long can I drive on my old license?

Sixty days in a row after you settle here permanently. Then it gets swapped for a Montana card.

Will I have to retake tests to transfer my license?

Usually you only read the eye chart, provided your old license is current or less than a year expired. The MVD can still ask for written and driving tests.

I am 18. Can I still join a school traffic ed class?

Possibly. State approved courses take students from 14 and a half to 19, so ask your district about open seats.

Where will I take the driving test?

At an MVD driver license station. Book online and bring a vehicle that matches the license class you want.

How much does an adult license cost?

In October 2026: $62.32 (twelve years) if issued between 21 and 63, $67.47 with REAL ID. Cards issued at 18, 19 or 20 are cheaper since they stop at 21.

What gets a car turned away from the road test?

Cracked glass, or a brake light, taillight or blinker that does not work. Also have the permit, registration and insurance.

Do I need my Social Security card?

Leave it home if you like. Know the number, and make sure Social Security has the same name and birth date you give the MVD.
