Nebraska Drivers 18 and Up: Earning a Class O License

Optional

This page is for Nebraska adults who have never been licensed, and for newcomers bringing a license from elsewhere. The question most people ask first is whether they need a course. In Nebraska, no. An applicant 18 or older who never had a POP takes vision, written and driving tests for a Class O, and a current Learner's Permit, or one less than a year expired, removes the written test. The only time Nebraska forces training on an adult is after three driving test failures in a row.

Step by step

  1. Gather documents

Proof of citizenship or lawful status, two or more papers with your Nebraska home address, and a Social Security number the DMV can verify.

  2. Get an LPD if you need practice time

Clear the eye and written tests for a Learner's Permit, $13 and good for a year, and drive with a licensed driver aged 21 or more beside you.

  3. Pass the written test

Twenty five questions; five misses allowed. A pass is good for six months.

  4. Take some lessons if you are starting cold

A school from the DMV's Driver Training Schools list can get you ready. Their tests do not stand in for the DMV's.

  5. Drive the test

At a driver licensing office. A failed test cannot be repeated the same day.

  6. Pay and get your Class O

Five years costs $24 plus the $5 security fee. Most licenses run the full five years.

Before you start: do you need a course?

No. If you are at least 18 and the state never issued you a POP, your first license comes after three checks: eyes, written and driving. An LPD in your wallet, current or lapsed under a year, removes the written one.

Training becomes mandatory only after repeated failure. Fail three driving tests in a row for a Class O and you may not reapply until you either complete a DMV approved driver training course of at least 6 classroom hours and 6 behind the wheel hours, or have held an LPD for 90 days or more.

Before the visit: what to bring

Pack a citizenship or lawful status document printed with your whole name and birthday, two or more items proving where in Nebraska you live, and your Social Security number for the DMV to check. People relying on immigration documents should know the DMV confirms them with USCIS first; allow as long as 20 federal working days, and bring the same documents each time you come in.

If your name today differs from your birth record, carry the certified paper that links the two, such as a marriage license, divorce decree or court order. An out of state Real ID card may save you some testing, yet it does not count by itself as identity proof.

At the office: the written and driving tests

Twenty five questions make up the Class O written test, and you can get five wrong, an 80 percent minimum. You can take it on paper or by audio, in English, Spanish or American Sign Language, and anyone whose first language is something other than English may choose a picture based version with 24 questions and no reading.

Fail and you come back another day; pass and the result stays good for six months. Every question is drawn from the state driver's manual, and the DMV site has practice tests built from it.

Between tests: practicing on an LPD

Adults can hold an LPD just like teens. It is $8 plus the $5 security fee and runs a year from issue. Every drive needs a licensed driver aged 21 or more in the seat beside you.

No interactive wireless device may be used while you drive on it. Adults face no minimum time on an LPD, unless they are using it to get past the three failed drive test rule. For example, someone who passes the written test in April can practice weekends through May and book the road test whenever they are ready.

If you just moved to Nebraska

Newcomers holding a current license get 30 days from the move to convert. The old card is surrendered. Adults whose card is still valid skip the written exam, and DMV policy decides whether they drive for an examiner.

Expired less than a year ago? Expect the written test. Expired longer, or you cannot hand it in? Expect written and driving tests. A license issued in Canada, Germany, Mexico or a U.S. territory always means sitting the written exam.

Paying: Class O fees, terms and the star

October 2026 pricing: $29 for a five year Class O, which is a $24 fee and the $5 security charge. Shorter terms cost less, as little as $10 for a year or under. A replacement is $16.

If you are licensed before 21, the card ends on your 21st birthday and can be renewed 30 days ahead. A license tied to an immigration document ends when that document does, and a bioptic or telescopic lens restriction means renewing every year.

A Real ID compliant card carries a star at the top right. Since March 2026 it is a white star inside a black circle; older cards with a white star in a gold circle stay valid through December 2031.

After you pass: points worth knowing

Nebraska revokes a license automatically at 12 points within two years. In town, 6 to 10 mph over is already worth 2 points, and handling a phone to read or send messages at the wheel costs 3.

Drivers younger than 21 have a tighter rule: hit six points in a year and the DMV will order a certified improvement course, due within three months, with suspension as the penalty for skipping it. The suspension page says four hours minimum while the POP page still says eight; your notice settles it.

Is a driving school worth it for an adult?

Nothing we found in Nebraska rules makes insurers reward an adult for taking lessons. The real return is a first time pass and never getting near the three strikes rule; paying a certified school for a handful of sessions is often cheaper than several failed office visits.

Nebraska keeps two lists, so look at the right one. The Driver Safety Schools list is for teenagers working toward a School Permit or POP. Adults usually want the Driver Training Schools list, a separate DMV document last revised in March 2026, where some schools also teach truck or bus driving.

Two cautions before paying. A test passed at a driver training school does not replace the DMV's tests, so you still test at a licensing office. And a few programs on the list, run by hospital rehabilitation departments, are meant for drivers with physical disabilities and older adults, not for people working off the three failure rule.

Nebraska adult drivers ed: common questions

Do I need drivers ed as an adult in Nebraska?

No. Adults just pass the three tests. Only after three straight driving test failures does Nebraska demand a course, and even then 90 days on an LPD is an alternative.

How long is the written test?

Twenty five questions. You may miss five, which is the 80 percent passing line.

Must I get a permit first?

No permit period applies to adults. An LPD is useful for legal practice beside a licensed driver aged 21 or more, and it removes the written test later.

How long after moving do I have to switch?

Thirty days. At 18 or older with a current out of state license, the written test is waived.

What does a Class O cost?

In October 2026, $29 for five years: $24 plus the $5 security fee.

I failed the road test three times. What now?

Before your fourth attempt, either finish an approved course (6 hours in class, 6 in the car) or spend 90 days on an LPD.

Will a driving school's test count at the DMV?

No. Passing a test at an adult training school does not excuse you from the DMV's. Testing on the DMV's behalf is limited to teen safety schools, for School Permits and POPs.

What is the star on the card?

It means the card meets Real ID rules. Cards made since March 2026 put the white star on a black disc; older ones use a gold disc.

Can I take the written test in Spanish?

Yes. Spanish is offered on paper and by audio, as is American Sign Language, and a picture test exists for those whose first language is not English.
