Getting a California Driver's License as an Adult

Optional

This page is for Californians aged 18 or over who need a first license, plus people who have just moved to the state. The question most of you are weighing is whether to pay for lessons. The DMV does not make you: at 18 and up, neither driver education nor driver training is required. You apply for an instruction permit, get through an eye exam and a written knowledge test, practice beside a licensed adult, and then take the behind the wheel test. Lessons are a choice, and a sensible one if you have never driven at all.

Step by step

  1. Start the application online

Complete the DMV's combined license and ID card application on the website, then reserve an office appointment. Line up documents proving your identity, your California address and your Social Security number.

  2. Go in for the office visit

You pay the application fee, which is not refundable, give a fingerprint, pose for a photo and read the eye chart. If you wear glasses or contacts, have them with you.

  3. Pass the written test

Questions are multiple choice, taken from the official handbook, and 80 percent passes. Each required test allows three attempts before the application has to start over.

  4. Practice on the permit

Whoever rides with you needs a California license, an age of 18 or more, and the ability to take over if needed. You face no minimum time on the permit and no log to keep, so practice until you feel steady.

  5. Take the road test

Book a slot and show up in a car that is road legal and safe. Retesting costs $9, and a third failed road test means a fresh application.

  6. Use the interim license until the card comes

A pass may earn you a paper interim license that lasts up to 60 days while the real card is mailed. If 60 days pass with no card, call the DMV.

First question: do adults need a course?

No. Look at the DMV's permit requirements for applicants 18 and over and you will not see any driver education or driver training certificate. Self study from the official handbook is enough, pass the knowledge test, and begin practicing with a licensed adult on the day the permit is issued.

A 16 year old, by contrast, cannot skip any of it: classroom hours, professional lessons, a practice log and half a year on the permit. As an adult, the only thing setting your pace from permit to road test is your own skill.

If you have never driven: when lessons pay off

Optional is not the same as pointless. A first time driver learns the maneuvers the examiner scores much faster with a DMV licensed instructor, in a school car that has a brake on the instructor's side. Plenty of adults also book one lesson the week of the test just to drive around the local test route.

Stick to schools the DMV has licensed and bonded. You can vet any school or instructor in two places on the DMV site, its school list and its license lookup tool,, and the DMV takes complaints if something goes wrong.

Before your appointment: documents and REAL ID

Bring your Social Security number, proof of identity and proof that you live in California. If your name is not the same on every document, add the legal name document that connects them. The handbook asks for two residency proofs, with some exceptions, so bring two and avoid a second trip.

Three formats are on offer. One is REAL ID; another is a standard license that is not federally compliant; the third is the AB 60 license. Federal enforcement started in May 2025, so for domestic flights you now need a REAL ID or a passport at airport security. If you are collecting documents anyway, REAL ID is usually the sensible pick.

AB 60 serves residents who have no way to document lawful presence in the U.S. It is a real California driving license, but its face says it cannot be used for federal identification. Each format's document list is on the DMV's REAL ID and AB 60 pages.

At the office: the eye exam and knowledge test

The adult route is for people who are 18 or older. During the visit you pay the fee, pass the eye exam, have a photo taken and sit the knowledge test, which has to be started before 4:30 p.m. if you take it in the office.

The pass mark is 80 percent. The application and fee last 12 months; fail the same test three times and the application is void, so you reapply.

Or test from home: the online knowledge test

Adults have had an online option since 2022. Pick the online option once your application is in, then test on a laptop or desktop that has a webcam, any weekday from 8 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon. You get two online tries; after that, testing moves to an office.

Afterward you still go in so staff can check documents, take a thumbprint and photo, and test your eyes. Online testing only replaces the time you would spend at a testing terminal.

While you practice: who can ride with you

Your practice partner, per the handbook, needs a California license, must be 18 or older, and has to be capable of taking over the wheel. Teens need someone 25 or older, so the adult rule is looser. A permit never lets you drive alone, which means you cannot drive yourself to the test.

Suppose your roommate is 22 and licensed in California. They can supervise your practice drives; they could not supervise a 16 year old's.

On test day: the car check and the drive

There are no walk in road tests; you need an appointment. Experienced or not, the DMV fact sheet tells you to practice first and to read its separate sheet on getting ready for the test. Retesting for a Class C is $9 as of October 2026, and a third failure means starting a new application.

Before you drive, the examiner looks over your car, and a car that fails goes home with the test rescheduled. Expect the examiner to check that the driver's window rolls down, the windshield is clear, there are two rearview mirrors (one of them on the driver's side), and the horn, wipers, signals, brake lights, parking brake and belts all work. Tread must be at least 1/32 inch deep, and a donut spare is not allowed.

Have proof of insurance and registration ready. Rental cars are fine if the agreement lists you as a driver and does not forbid using the car for a DMV test. You may not use automated parking or adaptive cruise control during the test.

After a pass you may leave with a paper interim license lasting as long as 60 days, which lets you drive solo until the plastic card arrives or the paper expires.

If you just moved to California

Once you become a resident, the DMV expects a California license in your wallet within 10 days. Things that show residency include voting in a California election, paying in state tuition, or claiming the homeowner's property tax exemption.

Visitors who are 18 or older can use a valid home state license for as long as it remains valid. Residents are different: plan on the knowledge test, ask the DMV whether you also face a road test, and carry the old state's license to your appointment.

Insurance and courses for older drivers

No California rule ties an insurance discount to a beginner course for adults. Some insurers rate new drivers differently after professional lessons, so ask your own company. Drivers 55 and older have a different option, the DMV approved Mature Driver Improvement Program, which the defensive driving page covers.

California adult drivers ed: common questions

I am 19. Does California make me take driver ed?

No. Nothing on the DMV's adult permit list calls for a course. Get the permit, pass the tests, and practice beside a licensed adult.

Do adults have to wait six months on a permit in California?

No. Adults have no minimum holding period; that rule is for applicants under 18.

What do I need to pass the California knowledge test?

Eighty percent. One application allows three tries on each required test.

Can a friend supervise my practice drives?

Yes, if they are 18 or older, hold a California license and can take control of the car. Teens need a supervisor who is at least 25.

I just moved here. When do I need a California license?

The DMV allows 10 days after you become a resident. Book a visit and take your old license along.

What does an adult pay for a California license?

Forty six dollars for the original Class C application as of October 2026, plus $9 every time you retake the road test.

Can I take the written test online as an adult?

Yes. Use a webcam equipped computer on a weekday between 8 and 4; two online tries are allowed, and an office visit for the photo, eye check, thumbprint and documents still follows.

Is there a license for residents without proof of legal presence?

Yes, the AB 60 license. It makes driving in California legal for residents who cannot document lawful presence, though it will not get you through airport security or serve any other federal purpose.

Can I borrow a car or rent one for the road test?

Any registered, insured car in safe condition that passes the examiner's equipment check. With a rental, you must be named on the agreement and it must allow drive tests.

Can I drive myself to the road test on my permit?

No. A permit never allows solo driving, so bring a licensed driver who is at least 18.
