Oregon Drivers Ed for Adults: What You Need and What You Can Skip
Optional
This page is for Oregonians 18 and up getting a first license, and the question on your mind is probably whether you have to pay for classes. You do not. There is no adult course requirement and no minimum time on a permit. Clear three hurdles (an eye check, a 35 question written exam, a road test) and pay the fee. The one shortcut a course offers: an ODOT-approved driver education course passed within the last 2 years removes the drive test, though never the knowledge test.

Step by step
Read the manual first
All 35 questions come out of the Oregon Driver Manual. DMV has free practice tests in English and Spanish to check yourself once you have read it.
Pass the knowledge test
Take it online or at an office for $7 per try. Nothing else can be scheduled until you pass, including the drive test.
Get a permit only if you need practice
You need a permit only to practice on public roads before the drive test. With one, you may drive whenever a licensed adult of 21 or more sits next to you, for up to two years.
Think about lessons or an approved course
A DMV-certified driver training provider can teach you. If the program is ODOT-approved and you pass it within 2 years of applying, the drive test is waived, so ask about approval before paying.
Take the drive test
Schedule it either through DMV, which charges $45, or through a Class C testing business. Show up in a car that is registered, insured and in good working order.
Finish at the DMV counter
Show who you are and where you live, provide a Social Security number (or certify that none was issued), read the eye chart, and pay. The October 2026 price for an original license good for 8 years is $64; REAL ID makes it $94.
First question: do adults have to take a class?
No. When DMV lays out how someone 18 or older gets a first license, training and the permit are both marked optional, and adults have no hour minimum to log.
DMV does say a permit is needed if you plan to practice on the road before your test. Already a capable driver with access to a test car? Then you can book the road test as soon as the written exam is behind you.
Before you apply: papers for a standard card
Bring one original identity document showing your birth date. A U.S. birth certificate works, as does a passport that has not been expired for more than five years or a Permanent Resident Card. Without one of those, DMV will take two secondary documents from separate sources, for example a current year W-2 plus certified school records.
For address, one paper with your name and the Oregon place you live will do: a rental agreement, a utility bill dated within the last six months, or a paycheck stub from within the last year. Provide your Social Security number if you have been assigned one; DMV checks it with the Social Security Administration.
Before you apply: REAL ID or not
REAL ID adds $30 and requires unexpired proof of identity and lawful status, plus two printed address documents from different sources. It cannot be added online, so you apply in person, by appointment or on standby.
You do not need REAL ID to drive. Since May 2025, though, you need REAL ID or a passport to board a domestic flight, so weigh the extra $30 against how often you fly.
On test day: knowledge and vision
New drivers sit the Class C written exam, 35 questions, either online or in an office, and each try costs $7. Some offices can fit in a second attempt on the same day.
There is always a vision screening. If you wear glasses or contacts for it, you will have to wear them to drive. If you fail it, DMV gives you a form for your eye doctor to fill out.
If you take a course: getting the drive test waived
The road test exemption is not limited to teenagers. Adults who pass an ODOT-approved course, and apply within 2 years, get it as well. Completions from October 14, 2024 onward reach DMV electronically. The knowledge test still has to be passed.
From DMV's Learn to Drive page you can find training providers DMV has certified to teach in ordinary passenger cars. Many sell both ordinary lessons and the ODOT TSO-approved Driver Ed course. Lessons build skill but do not earn the waiver, so ask for the approved course by name if the waiver is what you want.
On test day: the drive test
No walk-ins: reserve a slot on DMV's website or with a Class C testing business, and only once the written exam is passed.
Your car needs up-to-date registration and an insurance card, and the examiner will look over its lights, brakes and other equipment before you start. A failed test can be retaken from the next business day on.
At the counter: how the fees stack up
DMV collects each test fee separately and before the test. That is $7 for every knowledge test attempt and $45 for every DMV drive test attempt, so a retake means paying the whole fee again. The license itself is a separate payment.
Carry your identity and birth date proof to each test, too; DMV checks it every time, not just at issuance. Expect the plastic card in the mail in about 5 to 10 days. Mail forwarding does not apply to it, so update DMV with any new address before you apply.
If you are moving to Oregon with a license
Arriving with a license issued by another state, a U.S. territory, D.C. or the State Department? Hand it in, and if it lapsed no more than a year ago, both tests may be skipped. Oregon gives the same treatment to licenses from Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
Every license, permit or ID you hold, from any state, gets turned in, and your privileges must be in good standing everywhere: no suspension, cancellation or revocation. Bring identity and Oregon address proof.
After you are licensed: how DMV watches adult records
Once you are licensed, DMV tallies every conviction and every crash it judges preventable. Hit three in a 24 month span and you lose late night driving (midnight until 5 a.m.) for 30 days; hit five and you lose the license for 30 days.
Oregon has no class that wipes those entries once they are recorded. That is a good reason for a brand new adult driver to get proper instruction rather than learning by trial and error.
Is a course worth paying for?
Two situations make it worthwhile: you have no car or no experienced driver to practice with, or you would rather earn the road test exemption than face a DMV examiner. As for insurance, DMV has nothing to do with rates, so ask your carrier whether a course earns any credit.
Oregon adult drivers ed: common questions
As an adult, do I need a learner permit in Oregon?
Only if you want to practice on the road before the drive test. It allows driving with a licensed adult 21 or older beside you and lasts two years.
Will a drivers ed course get me out of the knowledge test?
No. An ODOT-approved course passed within 2 years can replace the drive test, but DMV says the knowledge test is still required.
What will my first Oregon license cost?
The card itself is $64 for 8 years, or $94 as a REAL ID (October 2026). Add $7 per written attempt and $45 per DMV road test attempt.
I just moved here. Do I retake the tests?
Usually not. Turning in a license from another state that lapsed a year ago or less typically gets both tests waived.
Can a private company give my drive test?
Yes. Class C testing businesses give the drive test, and afterward you go to DMV to be issued the license.
Is there a minimum number of practice hours for adults?
No. The 50 or 100 hour rule is for drivers under 18. Adults just pass the tests.
How long does an adult instruction permit last?
Two years from the issue date, according to Oregon DMV.
How soon after moving must I switch my license?
Within 30 days if you plan to drive. Titling and registering your car has the same 30 day window.
Will Oregon accept my license from another country?
Licenses from Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan generally transfer without testing, like a U.S. license. For other countries, ask DMV first and expect to take the Oregon tests.
Is REAL ID required for a first license?
No, it is an optional $30 upgrade. Since May 2025, though, domestic flights require either a REAL ID or a passport.
