Alabama Drivers Ed for Adults: What You Actually Need
Optional
This page is for anyone 18 or older in Alabama who has never held a license, or who is arriving from another state, and is wondering whether a course is mandatory. It is not. Once you are 18, Alabama's graduated license stages drop away entirely, and ALEA will give you a full license when you pass the written knowledge exam and the road skills exam. The real decision is whether you want lessons anyway, and that depends on how much driving you have already done.
- Is a course mandatory at 18+?
- No
- Graduated stages for adults
- Do not apply
- Tests you take
- Written knowledge exam, then road skills exam
- Fees as of October 2026
- $5 exam plus $36.25 license
- How to pay
- Cash or money order; checks refused
- Transferring from another state
- $5 transfer fee plus $36.25 license fee
Step by step
Sort your ID documents first
Pick either two IDs (one of them with your photo) or three IDs without photos, and add your Social Security card. Make sure at least one comes from ALEA's primary list, such as an unexpired U.S. passport or a certified birth certificate.
Add two residence documents
ALEA wants two proofs of where you live: a mortgage, lease, voter registration or utility bill no older than 90 days all work. If the bill is in your spouse's or parent's name, carry the marriage or birth certificate that ties it to you.
Read the whole driver manual
Everything on the knowledge exam comes from the Alabama Driver Manual. Give the signs and right of way sections a second pass before you go.
Take the written exam
Sit the test at an ALEA examining office after paying the $5 fee. A pass qualifies you for a learner license, so you can practice with any licensed driver in the next seat.
Line up the car, the insurance card and a licensed companion
For the driving portion, ALEA asks adults to show up with a licensed driver, proof of insurance on the car, and a car whose equipment passes the examiner's check.
Pass the road skills exam and pay
When you pass, pay the $36.25 license fee. That is the same amount ALEA lists for an 18 year old who skipped Stage II altogether.
The short answer: no course is required
Alabama's Graduated Driver License law, Act 2010-735, stops applying on your 18th birthday. The SDE driver education course and the 50 hour practice form that teens must produce simply are not part of an adult application.
Skipping a requirement is not the same as being ready, though. If you have rarely driven, a few paid lessons with a driving school can be the quickest way to get comfortable at highway speed and to rehearse the exact maneuvers the examiner will score.
Before your ALEA visit: what to collect
Adults use ALEA's standard process for applicants 16 and older. You prove who you are, your Social Security number and where you live, then you take the written exam, then the road test.
- Two IDs including one photo ID, or three IDs with no photo, plus your Social Security card
- At least one of those IDs from ALEA's primary list
- Two documents showing your principal residence
- $5 for the test and $36.25 for the license, paid without a check
Between the two exams: using a learner license
You do not have to do everything in one day. If driving skill is the only thing you lack, a passed written exam earns you a learner license (the rule covers anyone 16 and up). It looks like a regular license with a Y restriction, lasts four years, and lets you drive only with a licensed driver sitting next to you.
Adults face no minimum time on that license, so you pick when to book the road test. A good rule of thumb: book it once you can drive a full practice loop near the testing office without your companion needing to say anything.
On test day: what the examiner checks
Arrive with a vehicle that will pass inspection, an insurance card for it, and a licensed driver. Missing any one of those usually means being sent home to try again another day.
ALEA's road test study guide lays out the scored items. You will back up in a straight line for roughly 50 feet, turn the car around in three moves without pulling into a driveway, stop and pull away on a hill, signal at least 100 feet before each turn, and keep a two second gap behind the car ahead.
Some mistakes end the test on the spot: any collision, breaking a traffic law, driving recklessly, or refusing to cooperate with the examiner.
Booking is flexible. At certain locations you can schedule online up to two weeks ahead, and every testing site accepts walk ins. Driving the streets around your chosen office the day before is a cheap way to calm your nerves.
If you are moving to Alabama with a license
Section 32-6-1 of the Code of Alabama gives you 30 days from the day you become a resident to switch to an Alabama license. Until then, ALEA lets you keep driving on your valid license from the previous state.
The transfer has to happen at an ALEA office. Carry your current license from the old state, the Social Security card, one primary list document and two residence proofs. As of October 2026 you pay $5 for the transfer plus the $36.25 license fee.
Whether you test again depends on your old license. If it has been expired for no more than a year, ALEA says you skip the driver examination. If it lapsed longer ago, plan on both the written and road tests.
Some people never need to switch: out of state military personnel posted in Alabama along with their families, and nonresidents studying full time who carry a valid license from home.
If you are not a U.S. citizen
Start with either a resident alien card or a valid foreign passport carrying an acceptable visa. You also need Social Security verification, or a letter from the SSA saying you are not eligible for a number, plus a secondary document proving you are authorized to be in the country for over 30 days.
Bring originals, not copies. Examiners compare them with ALEA's secondary list, where you will find documents like I-797 approval notices and I-94 records. Fees match everyone else's: $5 to test or transfer, then the license fee.
After you are licensed: can a course cut your insurance?
If you are 55 or older, yes. State law entitles drivers of that age who finish an approved motor vehicle accident prevention course to a lower premium. Approved means sponsored by AAA, AARP or the National Safety Council, or an equivalent the state has signed off on.
Under 55, it is entirely the insurer's call. Before you enroll in anything, phone your agent and ask which course names and certificates actually earn a discount. That one call can save you paying for a class that changes nothing on your bill.
Alabama adult drivers ed: common questions
I'm 18 and have never driven. Do I have to take drivers ed in Alabama?
No. Graduated licensing stops at 18, which means you can head straight to the two exams, written first and then the road test. Lessons are optional but often worth it if you are a true beginner.
Which documents prove my identity for a first Alabama license?
Either two IDs with one carrying your photo, or three non photo IDs, plus your Social Security card. One of them has to be on ALEA's primary list. Add two proofs of principal residence.
What will my first Alabama license cost?
As of October 2026, $5 for the exam and $36.25 for the license. Some counties charge a little more, and ALEA does not take checks.
What should I bring to the road test?
A licensed driver, proof of insurance on the car, and a car that passes the examiner's inspection. Without all three the examiner will not begin the test.
How does an out of state license transfer work in Alabama?
Take your old license, Social Security card, a primary list ID and two residence proofs to an ALEA office, then pay $5 for the transfer and $36.25 for the license.
Is there a driving course discount for older drivers in Alabama?
Yes. At 55 and up, completing an accident prevention course sponsored by AAA, AARP, NSC or a state approved equivalent earns a premium reduction under Alabama law. Ask your insurer how much.
I just moved here. How long can I drive on my old license?
Thirty days from becoming a resident, per Section 32-6-1. Get the Alabama license within that window.
Will I have to retest when I transfer my license?
Not if your old license has been expired for a year or less. ALEA requires the examination when it lapsed longer ago.
Can I practice before the road test as an adult?
Yes. Pass the written exam and you can get a four year learner license with a Y restriction, so you can practice next to a licensed driver for as long as you need.
