Georgia Defensive Driving: Using the DDS Course to Cut Your Points

Can reduce points

This page is for licensed Georgia residents who have points on their record, a court date, or a letter from DDS. The question is usually whether a course will help, and with what. In Georgia, a 6-hour DDS-certified Driver Improvement (defensive driving) course can take up to 7 points off your record, with a 5-year wait between uses. The course alone will not make a ticket vanish; how it affects your case is up to the court. And for anything involving your license, online courses are worthless to DDS.

Step by step

  1. Look up your points and eligibility

Your current total is visible in your DDS online account or the DDS 2 GO phone app. Point reduction is open to licensed Georgia residents, once every 5 years.

  2. Deal with the court before anything else

Respond to the citation with the court named on it by the date given. Hoping a course will help your case? Check with the prosecutor or the court first, because the choice is theirs.

  3. Choose a DDS-certified clinic

Pick a Driver Improvement Clinic from DDS's certified list. Uncertified schools, online classes and non-DDS programs like AARP's do not count for license purposes.

  4. Show up for every minute

Clinics enforce attendance strictly, and a late arrival can be turned away and charged again. Complete every session to receive the original Certificate of Completion.

  5. Get the original certificate to DDS

Deliver the original in person at a Customer Service Center, or post it to DDS at P.O. Box 80447, Conyers, GA 30013. Using it for reinstatement as well? Mention that when you submit it.

The decision in front of you: what a course can and cannot do

Georgia's statewide benefit from defensive driving is a points reduction through DDS. It is not a ticket dismissal. DDS lists the reasons someone might take the course: a court order, points reduction, reinstatement, a lower insurance premium, or simply to become a better driver.

Some courts may weigh a completed course when they decide your case, but that is local and up to the court. Before you pay for a class, ask the clerk of the court on your citation whether it accepts one and which type.

How the points reduction works

The authority is O.C.G.A. 40-5-86. If you hold a Georgia license and live here, completing a certified Driver Improvement course entitles you to request a reduction from DDS. The ceiling is 7 points, and the benefit resets only after 5 years.

The class must be a DDS-approved one, delivered by a clinic DDS has certified. Send DDS the original certificate, in person or by mail; a copy is not enough. DDS lets you know when the reduction has been applied.

Worked example: two tickets for 24 to 33 mph over (4 points each) and one for disobeying a traffic signal (3 points) leave you at 11, and you have not used a reduction in 5 years. Finishing the course brings you down to 4, which puts real distance between you and the 15-point suspension line.

Before you sign up: why online will not work

Online Driver Improvement classes carry no weight with DDS for anything connected with your license, and it will not accept an online certificate for any purpose tied to your driving privileges. That rules them out for point reduction and for reinstatement alike.

Approved courses are classroom only, with no time behind the wheel. An online Georgia defensive driving course might satisfy your insurer or a specific court, yet DDS will not take a single point off because of it.

Before you sign up: price, clinics and their rules

As of October 2026, DDS requires clinics to charge $95 when the course is for reinstatement, points reduction or a court. For other purposes, such as insurance or education, the price can be anything up to $95. Lose the certificate and the clinic can issue another, charging $5 at most. Clinics keep records only 3 years, and DDS gives 678-413-8745 as the number to call about courses from clinics that have closed.

Clinics are privately owned. DDS certifies each clinic and each instructor and monitors them under its own rules and the Georgia Driver Improvement Act, yet no instructor works for DDS. Before booking, read the attendance and refund policy. DDS cautions that arriving late can get you sent home and charged again for a fresh start, and that refunds and make-ups are private matters between you and the business. If something goes wrong, complain through DDS's online feedback form.

Find a clinic near you on DDS's Certified Driver Improvement Schools list. A clinic's certification can run as long as 4 years and then lapse, so look it up again shortly before class instead of trusting an old printout.

Know your numbers: Georgia's point schedule

Most convictions in Georgia carry 2 to 6 points, and a driver who reaches 15 points in any 24 months loses the license to suspension.

Two common tickets score zero: speeding by less than 15 mph, and a citation for going too fast for the conditions. The DDS sample schedule lists the values below.

  • 2 points: 15 to 18 mph over
  • 3 points: 19 to 23 mph over
  • 4 points: 24 to 33 mph over
  • 6 points: 34 mph or more over
  • 6 points: aggressive driving
  • 4 points: reckless driving
  • 6 points: passing a stopped school bus
  • 3 points: disobeying a traffic control device
  • 1 point: texting while driving
  • 3 points: every other moving violation

At court: nolo contendere, the once-in-5-years option

Georgia has no statewide traffic school that wipes out a ticket, but DDS rules offer another way to keep points off. DDS's own regulation, Ga. Comp. R. and Regs. 375-3-3-.01, says points are not assessed if a court takes a plea of nolo contendere or instructs DDS to avoid the points. Each driver gets that once every 5 years.

Accepting the plea is up to the judge. As the Athens-Clarke County Municipal Court explains, DDS still receives the nolo plea and it still appears on your driving history, and a repeat nolo within 5 years scores points just like guilty. Drivers under 21 should know that for the under-21 suspension rules, DDS treats nolo the same as a conviction.

When a court or DDS requires the course

A judge can order Driver Improvement as part of your sentence, and DDS can make it a condition of getting a suspended license back. The same certified 6-hour course works for both.

If one certificate is meant to cover reinstatement and point reduction together, say so when you hand it in at the Customer Service Center. DDS has separate FAQ pages laying out the steps for first, second and third points suspensions.

If you were going very fast: the Super Speeder fee

Georgia adds a $200 state Super Speeder fee, separate from the court's fine, when you are convicted of hitting 85 mph or more anywhere, or 75 mph or more on a two-lane road. The bill comes from DDS by first-class mail rather than from the court, and payment is due within 120 days of the date on the notice.

Leave it unpaid and DDS suspends your license, or for an out-of-state driver, the privilege to drive in Georgia. Reinstatement then costs the $200 plus $50 for each unpaid notice. The Super Speeder designation itself adds no points, although the speeding conviction does.

If you missed court or never answered the ticket

Ignore a citation or skip the court date and the court tells DDS. Twenty-eight calendar days after DDS receives that notice, a failure to appear suspension takes effect. Settle the case with the court before that date and you avoid both the suspension and the DDS fees.

Courts in Georgia mostly transmit the release to DDS online. Still, log in to your DDS account and make sure it shows before you get behind the wheel.

Courses that will not count, and the insurance angle

Courses DDS has not approved, AARP's included, cannot be used for license matters, and neither can a class from a school missing from the DDS certified list. Teen driver education under Joshua's Law is a different program and does nothing for points; licensed drivers of every age use Driver Improvement. For alcohol and drug offenses, DDS has the DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program, offered only by certified DUI schools. If a court orders Risk Reduction, a Driver Improvement certificate will not substitute, and it does not work the other way either, so match the program name on your court order or reinstatement letter exactly. If you are unsure, call the court clerk or check DDS Online Services before paying.

For insurance, DDS says people in your household may take the course to earn a lower premium, and it refers drivers to O.C.G.A. 33-9-42 for who qualifies. Your insurer sets the amount and the conditions. Before enrolling, ask whether it insists on a DDS-certified course or will take another program, and keep a copy of your certificate in case it asks again at renewal.

Georgia defensive driving: common questions

Will an online defensive driving class reduce my Georgia points?

No. Online versions are not accepted by DDS for points, reinstatement or any other license matter. The course has to be in a classroom at a certified clinic.

How many points can the course take off?

As many as 7, with 5 years between uses, under O.C.G.A. 40-5-86. Only licensed Georgia residents qualify.

What will the course cost me?

$95 as of October 2026 when it is for points, reinstatement or court. Taken for insurance or personal reasons, it can cost less, but never more than $95.

Will the course get my speeding ticket dismissed?

Not automatically. DDS uses it to reduce points; whether it changes the outcome of the ticket is up to the court, so ask the court first.

At how many points does Georgia suspend a license?

15 inside any 24-month span. Your account on the DDS website or in the DDS 2 GO app shows the current number.

Does a ticket for 10 mph over put points on my record?

No. Speeding under 15 mph over the limit adds no points, and neither does driving too fast for conditions.

Where does the certificate go?

The original goes to DDS, either over the counter at a Customer Service Center or by mail to P.O. Box 80447, Conyers, GA 30013.

I took the AARP course. Does it count?

Not with DDS. AARP's class is not DDS-approved, so it cannot be used for anything involving your license. Your insurer may still accept it for a discount.

Can a nolo contendere plea keep the points off?

Generally yes, provided the judge allows it and you have not used a nolo in the past 5 years. The plea still shows on your record, and under 21 it can still lead to an under-21 suspension.

What is the Super Speeder fee?

A $200 state charge, billed by DDS, for a conviction at 85 mph or more on any Georgia road or 75 mph or more on a two-lane road. Miss the 120-day payment window and the license is suspended; getting it back adds $50.

I lost my certificate. What now?

Ask the clinic for a replacement, which may cost up to $5. Records are kept 3 years, and for a closed clinic DDS gives 678-413-8745 to call.
