Signing Up for California Traffic School After a Ticket

This page is for a California driver with a fresh citation who wants to know if traffic school is on the table and how to get it right. Your decision is whether to request it before the due date or take another route. When it works, traffic school keeps a qualifying one point ticket confidential: no point is added and your insurer is not told. The court makes the call, never the school. To qualify you need a valid license, a ticket that passes Rule 4.104, and no traffic school for any violation in the previous 18 months, and you still pay the bail, a court fee and tuition.

Step by step

  1. Find your case

Pull up the case on the website of the superior court in the county of the stop. Note the due date and whether your courtesy notice offers traffic school.

  2. Run the eligibility check yourself

Look for four things: a single point, an ordinary car rather than a commercial one, a speed no higher than 25 over, and a clean 18 months with no traffic school. A citation showing a license from another state needs correcting before you go further.

  3. Ask before the due date

Clerks take the request online, over the phone or in person; if you are in court, put it to the judge. Either way, the full bail and the court's fee get paid now.

  4. Enroll with a licensed school

Choose an online or classroom traffic violator school, verify it in the DMV Occupational License Lookup, and pay tuition to the school.

  5. Finish early and confirm

Get through the material and the final exam well ahead of the date the court gave you. Schools file results online, but call or check the court's site before the cutoff to make sure yours arrived.

First, what you get and what you do not

You still pay the fine, and the citation still exists. As the handbook frames it, a judge handling a single point offense can allow the class, and once you finish, your insurance company never hears about it. The entry remains on your record, marked confidential.

In practice most drivers experience it as a dismissal: no point toward negligent operator status and no premium bump. Miss the completion deadline, though, and the conviction is reported as usual with its point.

Before you ask: the eligibility test

Clerks across the state apply the same test, found in California Rules of Court, rule 4.104. You need a valid license, and the ticket has to be a DMV reportable infraction under division 11 or 12 of the Vehicle Code.

Clerks must refuse a long list: misdemeanors, drug or alcohol offenses, anything carrying two points or more, speeds above 25 over, tank vehicle offenses, and any citation from behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle. Parking and correctable equipment citations were never part of the program.

Here is how the 18 month rule plays out. If your last traffic school ticket was dated January 5, 2025, a new ticket dated July 6, 2026 or later qualifies on timing; one dated June 2026 does not.

  • A license that is valid
  • An infraction worth a single point
  • Speed no more than 25 mph above the limit
  • No traffic school chosen in the past 18 months
  • No alcohol or drug element
  • Not in a commercial vehicle

If the clerk cannot approve it: the judge's discretion

Judges are not bound by the clerk's list. The same rule lets them grant traffic school on their own judgment, even for certain tickets the clerk had to refuse. Having pleaded not guilty or gone to trial is no bar, and the judge need not say why.

Timing is everything here. In San Francisco, a driver whose judge did not grant the class cannot later turn around and enroll at the clerk's window. Ask while you are standing in front of the judge.

If you hold a commercial license

Commercial licensees (Class A, Class B or commercial Class C) can only ask for the class when the ticket came in an everyday car or a motorcycle. Finishing still leaves the conviction visible.

Tickets earned in the commercial vehicle itself never qualify, and the DMV weights them at 150 percent of the usual points. For professional drivers, contesting is often the only way to keep a ticket off the record.

Paying and finishing: costs, schools and proof

Budget for three charges: all of the bail, the court's fee (which is never refunded) and the school's price. San Francisco lists its administrative fee at $52 as of October 2026. Enroll without qualifying and you forfeit those fees while the conviction is reported regardless.

Online courses are fine from any school the DMV licenses as a traffic violator school. Completions are reported electronically and usually appear at the court the following day. Keep your receipt from the school until the court's records say the case is closed.

If you miss the deadline or do not qualify

If you are behind, phone the court ahead of the cutoff about more time. Once the date passes, the DMV gets the conviction and you get the point.

If you do not qualify, the remaining roads are paying and accepting the point, fighting the ticket in person or on paper (form TR-205), or, when money is tight, asking via MyCitations for installments or a reduced amount. MyCitations itself cannot be used to request traffic school.

California defensive driving: common questions

What is the process to get traffic school in California?

Request it from the county court listed on the citation ahead of the due date, pay what the court asks, and register with a school holding a DMV license. Your finish date comes from the court.

Is my ticket dismissed if I finish traffic school?

Technically no. The conviction becomes confidential, which keeps it away from your insurer and out of the suspension math, yet the fine stays paid.

I had a ticket last year. Can I still do traffic school?

That depends on dates. Compare the old ticket's violation date with the new one; if 18 months separate them, timing is not a problem.

Can someone with an out of state license use California traffic school?

The court needs a valid license on file, and in San Francisco an out of state entry on the ticket must be fixed before enrolling. Check with your own court.

Will my court accept an online traffic school?

Generally yes, as long as the DMV licenses the school, unless your notice says otherwise. Verify the license first.

I missed my traffic school deadline. Now what?

Your conviction goes to the DMV with its point, and the money you paid is usually gone. Next time, ask for more time before the cutoff.

Can MyCitations sign me up for traffic school?

No. MyCitations handles ability to pay requests such as reduced fines and payment plans; traffic school is requested directly from the court.
