Preparing for the California Permit Knowledge Test
This page is for anyone about to sit the California permit test, and for the parent helping a teen study. The decision is when to test: each application, $46 as of October 2026, buys just three attempts, and a teen under 18 has to wait seven days after each fail. The exam is multiple choice and every question comes from the California Driver's Handbook. You need 80 percent. Test from home on a webcam computer or in person at a field office. Free official practice exams exist in multiple languages, ASL included.

Step by step
File the application online
Begin the eDL 44, the combined license and ID application, on the DMV website. Ten languages are available, and online testing is only offered once that online application is done.
Read the whole handbook
Spread the California Driver's Handbook over several days. Every question is drawn from it, and a quick skim the night before will not carry you.
Work the DMV sample tests
There are four official Class C practice exams, and the DMV swaps in new questions now and then. Redo any test where you scored below 80 percent.
Decide where to test
Online needs a webcam computer and runs on weekdays during set hours. At an office, arrive with plenty of time before 4:30 p.m., when knowledge testing stops.
Turn misses into study notes
After a test at a field office, ask staff for the handbook page behind each question you missed, and reread those pages before trying again.
Wrap up at the field office
A pass leads to the eye exam, photo and document check at the DMV. A teen's permit only becomes valid after the first lesson with a licensed instructor.
Before you study: who takes this test
Every applicant for an original California license sits it: the 15 and a half year old holding a course certificate and the 40 year old who has never driven alike. You have to pass it, plus the eye exam, before the DMV will issue an instruction permit.
Renewals work differently. For some Class C renewals, the DMV's no fail eLearning course can stand in for the knowledge test, but original applicants cannot use it, so it is no shortcut for new drivers.
While you study: what the questions look like
Per the DMV, each question has one right answer and two options that are clearly wrong or do not fit. There are no trick questions, and everything comes from the handbook.
The DMV's permit pages give no fixed question count, so focus on reaching 80 percent rather than counting. If your teen keeps scoring in the 90s on the official samples, test day should feel familiar.
You may not consult anything, phone and handbook included. After an office test, ask staff to point you to the handbook page for each wrong answer; which is the quickest way to fix weak areas.
While you study: which handbook sections matter
The online handbook is divided into sections that line up with the test. Rules of the road and safe driving each run across several web pages, and between them they supply most of the questions.
Two sections people skip and regret: the alcohol and drugs chapter and the insurance and collisions chapter. Questions about the blood alcohol limit for drivers under 21, zero tolerance, and what to do after a crash show up on a lot of tests.
A workable two week plan: read one section a day for the first week, take a sample test every other day in the second week, and finish with a full reread of the rules of the road pages.
- The license itself and how to get a permit
- Driving basics and finding your way on the road
- Rules of the road (three web pages)
- Safe driving (three web pages)
- Drugs and alcohol
- Insurance, financial responsibility and what to do after a crash
Free official practice and other languages
On the sample test page you will find the four English Class C exams, an American Sign Language set, and translated sets in Tagalog, Russian, Punjabi, Farsi, Armenian, Vietnamese, Chinese and Spanish. A plain answer sheet works in browsers that cannot run the quizzes.
You can download the handbook as a PDF in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian, Armenian, Hindi and Punjabi, and there is an ASL video edition. A teen more at ease in another language can study in it, but check that the test is offered in the language they pick.
On test day: the online option
Adults won online testing in 2022 and teens followed in September 2023. A webcam equipped computer is required, a proctor watches throughout, and the window is weekdays from 8 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon.
The online test comes in 35 languages. Up to two of your three tries can be online; if both fail, the last one happens in an office.
Clear the desk, close the door and keep the household out of the room. A voice in the background or an extra monitor can look like cheating, and the session may be ended with the attempt lost.
On test day: what teens and adults bring
A teen's folder holds the course certificate, the parent signed application, and identity and address papers. Adults 18 and up skip the course paperwork but take exactly the same test.
Motorcycle permits (M1 and M2) need their own exam based on the motorcycle handbook. The bar is also 80 percent, and a car test pass does not carry over.
If you fail: retakes and the 12 month clock
You get three attempts per application. Teens who fail sit out seven days, the day of the failure excluded. Because the handbook only imposes that wait on minors, adults should ask staff when they may return.
A third fail closes the application, and you start over with a new one and a new fee. And twelve months after payment the application lapses on its own, which catches teens who keep postponing.
California teen drivers ed: common questions
What percentage do I need on the California permit test?
Eighty percent, the standard on the DMV's instruction permit page.
How many tries do I get?
Three per application. After a third fail, you file a new application and pay again.
How soon can I retake it after failing?
Teens wait a week, test day excluded. The handbook gives adults no fixed wait, but the three attempt limit still applies.
Can I take the knowledge test at home?
Yes, at any age, once the online application is filed. Use a webcam computer between 8 and 4 on a weekday. Two online misses send the last try to an office.
Where can I find official practice tests?
The DMV hosts them: four English Class C exams plus translated and ASL sets.
How much does it cost to take the permit test?
Nothing extra. The Class C application, $46 as of October 2026, pays for the tests, the permit and eventually the license; a fresh application after three fails costs another $46.
Can the eLearning course replace the test for a new driver?
No. The no fail eLearning course is only for some Class C renewals, not original applicants.
