How to Prepare for the South Carolina Permit Test
This page is for a South Carolina 15 year old, or an adult, getting ready for the permit test. SCDMV calls it the knowledge test, and it covers traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, alongside an eye check, whenever someone 15 or older applies for a beginner's permit. Your main choice is where to sit it. Branches all offer it, and first-time regular permit applicants can also use a One-Stop driver training and testing program that SCDMV has authorized. In October 2026 each try cost $2. For study, SCDMV offers two official tools: the 2026 Driver's Manual and a free phone app called SC DMV Driver Exam.

Step by step
Download this year's manual
Download the newest edition from SCDMV's website. The 2026 manual follows the AAMVA model layout, so chapters may not line up with an older copy you have lying around.
Practice on the app
Put SCDMV's free SC DMV Driver Exam app on your phone; it serves up random questions every session. Finish with the practice questions printed at the end of the manual.
Send your eye results ahead
Have your optometrist or eye doctor file the Certificate of Vision Examination online through SCDMV; then the branch eye test is skipped.
Choose where to test
Use any branch. For a first regular permit, an SCDMV One-Stop school is an option too. Either way, pack your documents, and if you are under 18, bring the adult who will consent.
Know the test room rules
Leave your phone and notes outside. Talking, leaving early, or bringing in anything that could help you counts as a failure.
What the test is checking
Three things are checked under Section 56-1-130: how well you see, whether you can read and understand the signs that regulate, warn and guide drivers, and how well you know South Carolina's traffic law. SCDMV sums up the knowledge portion as traffic laws, road signs and safe driving rules, with every question sourced from the Driver's Manual.
Neither the testing pages nor the 2026 manual give a question count or a passing score. Ignore numbers you see quoted elsewhere, aim to know the whole manual, and ask the examiner about the format before you begin if it matters to you.
In the weeks before: where to focus
In 2026 SCDMV posted a new Driver's Manual built on the AAMVA model driver's license manual and split into 12 sections. Section 1 explains licensing and the graduated license program. Section 12, Test Your Knowledge, offers sample questions with three answer choices each.
Rules of the road and signs make up most of what matters. Expect to be asked about yielding, signals, what sign shapes and colors mean, pavement markings, lane controls, and alcohol and drug rules.
- Section 2: State laws and rules of the road
- Section 3: Being fit to drive (alcohol, distraction, the hands-free law)
- Section 6: Right-of-way, signals, signs and pavement markings
- Section 7: Turns, turnabouts and using lanes
- Section 10: Sharing the road with walkers, cyclists, motorcycles and trucks
- Section 11: Driving at night, in work zones and on rural roads
On test day: the room rules
The manual is blunt: no manuals or other aids during the knowledge test, and no written material or electronic device of any kind in the test area, whether that is a phone, laptop, iPad or Kindle. Walking out before you finish, talking to anyone, or carrying in anything that might help with answers all mean a failed test.
Think of it as an exam hall. Hand your phone to whoever came with you, and visit the restroom before checking in so you will not need to step out halfway.
Testing through a One-Stop program
State law (Section 56-1-15) tells SCDMV to sign contracts with public schools, local governments and private businesses so they can give both the road test and the signs-and-laws exam. SCDMV's name for them is One-Stop Driver Training and Testing Programs, and the list is on its website. A One-Stop program can test a first-time applicant for a regular Class D beginner's permit, for a driver's license, or for a motorcycle license.
Expect to pay more at a One-Stop program, which the statute allows; ask for the price up front. SCDMV also has to retest a random sample of people who passed through these programs, as a check on how instructors certify students, so a school pass does not excuse you from knowing the material.
The eye test
You can read the machine at the branch or be tested by a licensed eye care professional. An eye doctor in South Carolina files the Certificate of Vision Examination electronically through SCDMV's portal; one outside the state fills in SCDMV Form 412-NC. Since a 2024 change, standard vision certificates stay valid for 36 months.
The minimum is 20/40, with correction, in at least one eye. Meet it only with glasses or contacts and your permit will list a corrective lens restriction, which makes driving without them illegal.
If you fail
The SCDMV fee schedule, as of October 2026, puts the knowledge test at $2 a try and the beginner's permit at $2.50, so every retake at a branch is another $2. SCDMV's pages do not set a wait between knowledge test attempts; ask at the branch whether you may retest the same day.
Treat a failure as a map. Note which topics felt unfamiliar and reread those sections before you come back. The app pulls random questions each time, which suits several short study sessions.
For example, a 15 year old who fails on a Saturday morning might spend the weekend on the signs and right-of-way sections with the app, then retest early the next week for another $2.
Teens, adults and moped riders
Age does not change the car test; a 15 year old and a 40 year old answer the same Class D questions. What differs is the paperwork and the wait. Under 18, a qualified adult consents, and the permit must be held 180 days before road testing. At 18 and up the wait is 30 days. Adults going for Class E or F, the permits for big non-commercial vehicles, study the separate RV manual from SCDMV.
A Class G moped license, available from age 15, takes only the vision and knowledge tests, with no road test. For that one, study the Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual, not just the car manual.
South Carolina teen drivers ed: common questions
How many questions does the South Carolina permit test have?
SCDMV does not publish the question count or the passing score. Study the whole Driver's Manual and practice with the SC DMV Driver Exam app.
What does each attempt cost?
As of October 2026, $2 per attempt at SCDMV, then $2.50 for the beginner's permit. One-Stop programs may charge more.
Can I take the test at home online?
No. As of October 2026 there is no at-home version. Test in person at a branch, or with an authorized One-Stop program.
Is there an official practice test?
Yes, two. The SC DMV Driver Exam app is free and randomizes its questions, and the manual's Section 12 includes sample questions.
Can a driving school give me the permit test?
If the school is on SCDMV's authorized One-Stop list and you are applying for your first regular permit, yes. Be aware SCDMV may pick you for a random retest.
What if I check my phone during the test?
You fail. No electronic devices or written material of any kind are allowed in the test area.
Is there an eye exam?
Yes, a vision screening is part of a first permit. Take it at the branch or have an eye care professional send results to SCDMV.
Is the moped test the same as the car test?
The Class G moped license needs vision and knowledge tests only, and you should study the Motorcycle and Moped Operator's Manual for it.
