Connecticut for Adult Beginners: Course, Permit and Road Test
Required
This page is for anyone 18 or older in Connecticut who has never held a license and wants to know how much training the state demands. The answer is one short class plus some patience. Before any road test you complete the state's 8 hour safe driving class, taught by a licensed school, and the timing within that window is up to you. You also need a learner's permit, which you keep at least 90 days unless you are exempt, and every practice drive needs a qualified trainer beside you.

Step by step
Finish the work zone module first
Click through the state's free work zone lesson online. The DMV will not issue a learner's permit to a new driver without it, so save the confirmation.
Reserve your test slot
Book the vision and written tests online; the testing charge is $40 and the permit adds $19. Arrive with original documents and your appointment verification.
Clear the eye test, then the written test
You must pass the vision screening before you are allowed to take the 25 question test. If either goes badly, you book again and pay again.
Sit the 8 hour class
Take the Safe Driving Practices Course at a driving school licensed in Connecticut. The school sends your completion to the DMV electronically.
Drive with a trainer for 90 days
Only practice with a qualified trainer: someone 20 or older with four consecutive years licensed and no suspension. Keep the permit at least 90 days unless an exemption covers you.
Pass the road test and get licensed
After the waiting period, book the road test online. Arrive in a safe, registered and insured car. A pass means one more payment: $84 for the card.
Before you apply: what Connecticut requires of adults
You do need a class, though a short one. According to the DMV page on adult permits, nobody sits the on-road skills test until the 8 hour safe driving class is done, and you take it through a licensed driving school. Many people book it the week they get the permit; any time before the road test works.
What you skip: the 30 hour teen classroom program, the parent class and a logged 40 hours of driving. Even so, a mandatory course for every adult beginner puts Connecticut on the stricter end compared with many states.
There is one exception worth knowing. If you once held a Connecticut license and it has been expired two years or more, the 8 hour course is not required of you.
Before you apply: the documents
Bring originals only; the DMV refuses photocopies and faxes. Plan for: identity papers from the DMV checklist; your Social Security number, which the DMV cross-checks with the federal agency; a pair of residency documents with your Connecticut address, from separate sources and no older than 90 days; and, if you were born abroad, evidence of legal presence. Add a signed Form R-229 and, from January 1, 2026, a printed copy of your Work Zone Safety Course certificate.
For a REAL ID compliant license you need the full set, and verified licenses go only to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. Residents unable to document legal presence can look at the Drive Only card, which permits driving but is not accepted as federal ID. Check with the DMV which card fits your situation before you book.
While you hold the permit: the 90 day clock and exemptions
Adults wait at least 90 days on the permit before booking a road test. The permit itself is always needed, but the wait is waived for three groups. Service members on active duty posted outside Connecticut are one. People with an earlier Connecticut permit or license on the DMV's own files are another. The third is anyone once licensed in a different state, in a U.S. territory or abroad who brings the old card or a history of their driving.
Example: if you get your permit on June 1 and none of the exemptions apply, your first possible road test date is around the end of August. If you held a license in your home country and bring proof, you could test as soon as your 8 hour course is complete.
While you hold the permit: who sits beside you
Every drive needs a qualified trainer: someone aged 20 or more whose license has run four unbroken years without a suspension. Since you cannot drive solo on a permit, not even to the test, so line up your trainer for test day as well.
While you hold the permit: picking a school for the course
The DMV publishes a list of driving school locations that shows the commercial schools licensed in Connecticut. When you call, find out the class format, classroom or some other format the DMV recognizes, and ask the school to confirm it will file your completion electronically before your road test.
On test day: the written test and the road test
Every test is by appointment. The written test has 25 questions, and you need 20 right. Your study kit is the state Driver's Manual plus the sample questions inside the DMV's phone app. The eye check for an ordinary Class D card wants 20/40 acuity (glasses are fine) and 140 degrees of side vision.
On road test day you need three things: the permit, evidence that you completed the 8 hour class, and a sound car with current registration and insurance. An unsafe car means no test that day, but you can reschedule without paying again. The examiner checks everyday driving: signs and signals, turning, backing, parking and how you handle other traffic.
If something goes wrong: retests and costs
Miss on the written test and you sit out a week, then pay $40 once more. Miss on the road and the gap is two weeks minimum, again with $40 to pay.
October 2026 prices: testing is $40, the permit is $19, and a first regular license is $84. According to the fee chart, that license runs somewhere between 5 and a half and 7 years.
After you pass: insurance and new residents
The 8 hour course exists for licensing, not for insurance. Connecticut law guarantees a discount only to drivers 60 and older who finish an approved accident prevention course. Below 60, a discount is up to the insurer, so ask.
Moving here with a license? One DMV page (on transfers) says you have 90 days from becoming a resident; another (general licensing) says 60. Treat the shorter one as your deadline and check with the DMV. Expect an eye test, identity papers, Form R-229, and fees of $84 and $40.
A card from elsewhere that lapsed over two years ago does not transfer. You go through the beginner steps instead: Connecticut permit, the 8 hour class with a licensed school, and the road test.
Connecticut adult drivers ed: common questions
Is there a required driving class for adults in Connecticut?
Yes. Every first-time driver aged 18 or over sits the 8 hour safe driving class with a licensed school before testing on the road. Beyond that short course, no classroom hours are required.
How soon can an adult book a Connecticut road test?
Ninety days after the permit is issued. That wait does not apply to active-duty service members posted outside the state or to drivers who can prove an earlier license.
Can my friend supervise my practice drives?
Yes, provided your friend is at least 20, with four straight years of licensed driving and not one suspension. That is all a qualified trainer is.
How long is the written test for adults?
Twenty-five questions. The vision test comes first, and a failed vision test means you cannot take the written test that day.
I just moved here. How long can I drive on my old license?
The DMV gives two answers: 90 days on its transfer page, 60 on another page. Plan on 60, ask the DMV, and get an appointment on the calendar soon.
What will the state fees add up to?
At October 2026 rates the state takes $40 to test you, $19 for the permit and $84 for the card. The school's fee for the 8 hour class comes on top.
How many questions do I need right?
Twenty of the 25. Study the state manual and the sample questions in the DMV app, and expect the eye check before you see any questions.
Can my first Connecticut license be a REAL ID?
Yes, if your folder has everything: identity papers, your Social Security number, legal presence evidence and the two Connecticut residency proofs. Verified licenses go only to citizens and lawful permanent residents.
I had a Connecticut license years ago. Do I need the 8 hour course?
No. When an old Connecticut license lapsed two or more years ago, the DMV waives the 8 hour class.
