Rhode Island Driver's License for Adults 18 and Older

Optional

This page is for anyone 18 or older in Rhode Island who has never been licensed, or whose license lapsed long ago, and is wondering whether a class is needed. It is not. You book a computer knowledge exam at DMV headquarters in Cranston, receive an instruction permit, wait at least 30 days and then take the road test. As of October 2026, the permit is $8.50, each road test is $28.50, and the license itself is $44.50.

Step by step

  1. Read the whole Driver's Manual

The DMV tells adults to study the entire Rhode Island Driver's Manual before the exam. Since no class is required, the manual is your textbook.

  2. Book the exam in Cranston

Make a reservation for the computer exam at the headquarters building in Cranston (600 New London Avenue). Take the filled-in LI-1 and every item its checklist names.

  3. Pick up your permit

Pass, pay $8.50 as of October 2026, and you have an instruction permit that lasts a year and can be renewed once.

  4. Use at least 30 days to practice

The road test cannot happen until you have held the permit 30 days. If no friend or relative can ride with you, a few lessons with a licensed school are worth considering.

  5. Schedule and take the road test

Book online or at a DMV branch and bring a car registered in Rhode Island. The fee is $28.50 as of October 2026.

  6. Pay for the license

After a pass, the first license costs $44.50 as of October 2026. Paying by card adds a service fee from the payment processor.

Who this page is for

No class is required for you. The DMV says plainly that a drivers education course is not needed for an instruction permit once you are 18, and the 33 hour requirement applies only to applicants under 18.

The adult instruction permit is the starting point if you live in Rhode Island, are 18 or older, and have never had a Rhode Island license, or your Rhode Island license has been expired more than five years. If you are 18 or older and have just arrived from another country, you begin here too.

Before you apply: the LI-1, documents and REAL ID

Get the License/ID/Permit Application (LI-1) before anything else. Turn to page three: that is the same document checklist DMV staff use, so trust it over any list you find online.

You decide whether you want REAL ID. Federal enforcement began May 7, 2025, so getting on a plane within the U.S. or through the door of a secure federal building now takes a REAL ID or something equivalent, a passport for instance. The application adds paperwork: an identity document (unexpired passport or certified birth certificate), your Social Security number, two documents in your name showing a Rhode Island address, utility bills being the usual choice, and name change records if your name has changed. Both DMV offices and AAA branches issue it.

There is no extra charge for REAL ID during your renewal period. Outside that window it costs $28.50 as of October 2026. Residents who cannot get a standard license may qualify for Rhode Island's Driver Privilege Card, which has its own DMV FAQ and its own reservation category.

Exam day in Cranston

Adults sit a computer knowledge exam at DMV headquarters in Cranston, and only with a reservation. It runs in English, Spanish or Portuguese. Other languages can be given as a printed exam if you set it up in advance and bring someone to translate for you before and after.

If you do not pass, the next attempt has to be at least 8 days later. Rather than drilling practice questions, read the full Rhode Island Driver's Manual.

The permit month: 30 days and an unusual rule

Adults become eligible for the road test 30 days after the permit is issued. Something else on the DMV's permit page surprises people: until the road test, it says, an adult with a permit may drive solo. The statute behind the adult permit, G.L. 31-10-7, lets the holder drive and attaches no supervision condition, so the page and the law agree. Most states do not allow that, though, so ask your insurer before you drive solo.

Adult permits are good for one year and can be renewed for a second year. If you still have no full license after that, you take the knowledge exam again.

The DMV's permit page (checked October 2026) allows one renewal, sent in by mail, left in the drop box or done at a reserved appointment, with no online route. Is your renewed permit about to run out, or has your permit been lapsed two years? Then you sit the knowledge exam again. The statute agrees: G.L. 31-10-7, amended in 2025, allows renewal for only one additional year. The DMV's road test page still talks about two one-year extensions, but that text is out of step with the law, so count on a single renewal.

On road test day

The examiner runs your test on a closed course and stays outside the car. There are four segments, all described in the DMV's skills test guide. Your car needs a valid Rhode Island registration and has to pass an inspection by the examiner first.

Expect the examiner to walk around the car looking at the plates, registration and tires, then ask you to work the headlights, turn signals, brake lights and hazards. Windows have to roll down, and the tint has to be legal. You also need a current inspection sticker unless the car is newer than two years with under 24,000 miles. Do not bring a rental, an antique or a low-speed vehicle, and leave pets, cameras and any recording device behind.

Bad weather or a statewide emergency declared by the Governor cancels testing, and you rebook for free. Questions go to the Road Test Office at (401) 462-5750.

If something goes wrong on the road test

Rescheduling inside 48 hours costs you a second fee, so give notice early. Failing starts a waiting period that gets longer each time: a month after the first fail, three months (90 days) after the second, and six months (180 days) after the third and any later one.

Those growing waits are the best argument for paying for a few lessons before your first attempt, even though no course is required. The DMV does not link any insurance discount to adult lessons, so ask your insurer directly whether it gives credit for them.

Already licensed elsewhere? Transferring to Rhode Island

Once you establish residency, a 30 day clock starts for swapping your license. The card you bring needs to be current or have lapsed within the last five years. If the card is lost, ask your previous state for a certified copy of your driving record instead.

Has the old card been expired five years or longer? Then you are treated as new: knowledge exam in Cranston, then a road test. A straight transfer cost $49.50 in October 2026. Your first card here can last as long as two years and runs out on your birthday.

A REAL ID from elsewhere is not honored automatically, so pack the REAL ID paperwork if you want one here. Cranston is the only office that handles licenses from U.S. territories. HazMat and passenger endorsements stay behind, while others come with you. Former taxi or limo drivers who carried paying passengers send a chauffeur application to the CDL section.

Fees and how to pay

Budget $81.50 across the three steps, using October 2026 prices. The adult permit is the cheap part at $8.50. Each road test attempt is $28.50, and the license you get at the end is $44.50. Every one of those already contains the DMV's $3.50 technology surcharge.

Cash, checks (personal or bank), money orders and major credit cards are all accepted. Cards cost extra: a minimum $1.55 fee, or 2.40% once the total reaches $65.

Rhode Island adult drivers ed: common questions

I'm 19. Do I have to take drivers ed in Rhode Island?

No. Once you are 18, the DMV issues an instruction permit without any driver education class.

How long does an adult wait between the permit and the road test?

At least 30 days. The permit itself is good for one year and can be renewed once.

Where is the adult knowledge exam given?

In Cranston, at the headquarters on New London Avenue, by reservation. Choose English, Spanish or Portuguese on the computer.

What will an adult pay for a first Rhode Island license?

In October 2026 the three fees were $8.50 (permit), $28.50 (road test) and $44.50 (license), so $81.50 if you pass the first time.

I just moved here. How long do I have to switch my license?

You have 30 days from establishing residency. No tests are needed if your old card is current or lapsed within five years.

What if I fail the adult knowledge exam?

Wait at least 8 days, then try again.

Is it true adults can drive alone on a Rhode Island permit?

That is what the DMV's permit page says about adults before the road test. The adult permit statute, G.L. 31-10-7, sets no supervision condition either. Almost every other state requires someone in the passenger seat, so call your insurer before you try it.

Do I need a REAL ID to drive in Rhode Island?

No. REAL ID is a choice, useful if you would rather show your license than a passport at airport security for U.S. flights or at secure federal sites. You can get it at the DMV or a AAA branch, with additional proof of who you are and where you live.

Can I use a rental car for the road test?

No. Rental, antique and low-speed vehicles are not accepted, and the car must have a valid Rhode Island registration.
