Traffic School in Rhode Island: The Real Options for a Ticket
This page is for a Rhode Island driver who has just been handed a ticket and is searching for traffic school. Rhode Island does not offer one, online or in a classroom, that dismisses or hides a ticket. Your real choice is between paying, fighting the charge, or asking for a dismissal based on your record. G.L. 31-41.1-7 allows it when you have been licensed for over three years and nothing else has been written up against you in the last three; you show up in court, ask, and pay a fixed $60. Courses here are something a judge orders, not something you pick.
- Course that dismisses a ticket
- None exists in Rhode Island
- Who can get the good record dismissal
- Licensed 3+ years, no violations in the last 3
- Fixed cost of that dismissal
- $60 ($35 fee plus $25 surcharge)
- Speeding that still qualifies
- 14 mph over or less
- CDL holders
- Not eligible
- Defensive driving when ordered
- 6 hours, $200, in person at CCRI
Step by step
Find your court on the summons
It names the Traffic Tribunal or a municipal court and gives your hearing date. Municipal courts run their own payment rules.
Pull your driving record
Order a certified copy through the state's online portal or at the DMV Adjudication Office. If your license is from another state, ask your home state for it at least 30 days before court.
Compare your charge to the exclusions
Check the statute's list. Speeding more than 14 mph over or a crash with damage, for example, rules the dismissal out.
Appear and make the request
Go in person. Sending money by mail is treated as a guilty answer. When your name is called the first time, request the dismissal for a good driving record.
Pay the $60 and any other costs
Two charges are fixed by law, $35 and $25. Anything beyond that may be waived.
Confirm the record later
A dismissed charge should not show on your DMV record. Order a fresh copy a few weeks later and check.
Before you search for a course: why none exists
Civil traffic charges in Rhode Island go through the Traffic Tribunal and municipal courts, and nothing in state law lets you trade a course for a dismissal. The DMV is explicit that no online program can replace its court-sanctioned defensive driving program.
Any site selling you a dismissal course for a Rhode Island ticket is selling something useless here. Outcomes change in three ways only: a dismissal for your clean record, pleading not guilty and winning at trial, or an appeal.
At your first appearance: asking for a good record dismissal
The statute, G.L. 31-41.1-7, has two conditions: more than three years as a licensed driver, and no other violation issued to you during the last three. Prove the second point and the judge must dismiss, unless there is a good reason not to. Past parking tickets do not hurt you.
The practical side is in the Judiciary's Know Your Rights notice: nobody gets this by mail, you ask in person, and if your license is from another state, a certified record from that state has to come with you.
For example, say you were licensed in 2015, got a speeding ticket in 2021, and were stopped this month for going 9 over. The 2021 ticket is more than three years back, so you can ask for the dismissal at your first hearing.
If your charge is on the excluded list
Some charges can never be dismissed this way. If yours is listed below, your real options are pleading, going to trial or appealing. Timing matters too: once six months have passed since your case was closed, the tribunal loses the power to grant this dismissal, so raise it at your first hearing.
- Speeding more than 14 mph over the limit
- Any violation involving a school bus
- Any charge from a crash that hurt someone or damaged property
- Child restraint violations under G.L. 31-22-22
- Refusing a chemical test
- Charges in the original jurisdiction of the Superior or District Court
- Anything charged to a CDL holder, or to anyone driving a commercial vehicle
After the dismissal: the bill and the record
Expect to pay $60. Of that, $35 is an administrative fee and $25 is a surcharge earmarked for highway maintenance, and the law bars judges and magistrates from waiving either piece, even when they waive other costs.
For three years the court remembers that you used it, so a second ticket in that time will not qualify. Meanwhile your DMV record stays clean, because the DMV leaves these dismissed violations off.
If you decide to pay instead
Some tickets can be paid without a court visit, but the money must arrive a full week before the hearing date. Know what you give up: a payment is an admission, and with it goes your shot at a dismissal.
There is also a repeat rule in G.L. 31-41.1-3.1. Found guilty of two traffic offenses (parking aside) inside a year? Then summons number three has to be answered in person in front of a judge, at the Tribunal or the local court.
If a judge orders a course
G.L. 31-41.1-6 gives judges and magistrates the power to send you to a retraining course taught by an accredited college in the state, and in practice that college is CCRI. Prices as of October 2026: Defensive Driving, six hours, $200. Alive at 25, for younger drivers, $125. Alcohol education, $405. The Colin Foote program, which takes 60 hours, $850.
Sign-up and payment run through the DMV's Driver Retraining office in Cranston; the college will not take your money directly. You sit in a classroom, unless you live 70 miles or further from Rhode Island, in which case defensive driving and alcohol education have a virtual option. Ignoring the order can cost you your license or registration.
If you cannot get to court or cannot pay
Two forms on the Traffic Tribunal's site can help: one asks to appear remotely, the other asks for a hearing on whether you can afford to pay. Send them in before your date rather than staying home.
Skip the hearing and the court can rule against you by default, then suspend your license or your registration. Leave a balance unpaid and the state can hold back your tax refund; after 90 days the Judiciary may publish your name and what you owe online.
Rhode Island defensive driving: common questions
Can I go to traffic school for a Rhode Island ticket?
Not the kind that clears a ticket. Driving classes here are penalties a judge orders; CCRI teaches them and the DMV collects the fee.
What is the best way to get a Rhode Island ticket dismissed?
Use your record. Licensed over three years and nothing on file in the past three? Ask the judge for the good driving record dismissal at your hearing. You pay a fixed $60, and certain charges do not qualify.
Will a clean record dismiss my speeding ticket?
Yes, if the ticket says 14 mph over or less and you meet the record requirements. At 15 over or more, this route is closed.
I drive a truck for work. Can I use the good record dismissal?
No. Holding a CDL rules you out, even for a ticket you got in your own car. Tickets issued in commercial vehicles are excluded as well.
Would an online defensive driving course help?
No. Nothing online replaces the court's course here, and no class of any kind makes a Rhode Island ticket go away.
I already paid. Can I still ask for the dismissal?
A payment is treated as an admission, and six months after the case closes the dismissal is off the table. If you paid without realizing, call the court right away.
Do parking tickets count against my clean record?
No. Parking violations are not counted as prior violations for the good driving record dismissal.
