Preparing for the Rhode Island Permit Test

This page is for anyone about to sit the Rhode Island permit test, whether a teen finishing the CCRI course or an adult booking a slot in Cranston. The exam is the DMV's computer knowledge test: 40 multiple choice questions with up to 90 minutes, drawn from the Rhode Island Driver's Manual. Teens in the CCRI course take it through the college; everyone else reserves a seat at DMV headquarters. Fail it, and you wait at least 8 days to try again.

Step by step

  1. Under 18? Get through the course first

Teens finish the 33 hour CCRI-certified class before anything else. At CCRI the exam is the last step of the class itself, while graduates of other approved schools carry their certificate to the DMV.

  2. Read the Driver's Manual cover to cover

Get it as a printable PDF or read it chapter by chapter on the DMV website. Every question is built on the traffic laws and road rules covered there.

  3. Book the correct reservation

On the reservation site, pick Written or Computerized Permit Test. Driver privilege card applicants choose their own separate category.

  4. Pack your paperwork for Cranston

Pack the completed LI-1, all the checklist documents and, for teens, the course certificate. If you need lenses to see the eye chart, have them on.

  5. Pass both tests, then collect the permit

Clear both tests, get your papers approved, pay, and you leave with either the limited instruction permit (teens) or the instruction permit (adults).

First: where you will take it

According to the Driver's Manual, every first-time applicant takes the computer knowledge exam. Teens 16 and 17 need to pass an accredited 33 hour classroom course first. If that course was at CCRI, the college gives the RI DMV knowledge exam; a CCRI student who fails it there retests at DMV headquarters.

Teens from other approved schools, and all adults, book a reservation at headquarters (600 New London Avenue, Cranston). If you already hold a license from another state, you are exempt and simply surrender it.

What the exam looks like

The Driver's Manual describes 40 multiple choice questions with a 90 minute ceiling. That is a long exam, so set a pace: around two minutes a question leaves you time to go back over anything you flagged.

In October 2026 we found no published passing score and no official practice test on the DMV's permit pages. Ask what score you need when you book, and quiz yourself with the manual's own diagrams and review questions.

In the weeks before: what to study

Three partners write the manual together: the DMV, CCRI and Rhode Island's driver education program. Its online edition breaks into chapters, which makes focused review easy. Because questions are pulled from the whole book, do one full read, then circle back to chapters dense with rules.

Chapter I deserves extra time because its graduated license rules apply to you from your first day on a permit. Chapter IX gathers the laws Rhode Island expects every driver to know.

  • I. Applying for a Rhode Island Driver's License
  • II. Distractions, drowsiness and emotions
  • III. Basic Driving Skills and Safety Rules
  • IV. Signals and Roadway Markings, rotaries included
  • V. Driving Emergencies
  • VIII. Sharing the Road Safely
  • IX. Laws You Must Know
  • X. Drinking, Drugs and Driving

If you need a language other than English

During business hours, with a reservation, you can take the computer version in Spanish, Portuguese or English. Other languages use a paper exam, arranged in two moves. Book the right reservation category. Then enter that booking's confirmation number on the DMV's foreign language request form, which gives staff time to prepare your paper copy.

Plan to be there an hour ahead. Your appointment sheet, application and documents go to the Enforcement Office (first floor) for approval first. A friend or relative can translate while you check in and when you finish, but the exam room is yours alone. If your reservation is in the wrong category, staff will send you home.

On exam day: the eye test

Vision is part of the exam under G.L. 31-10-21. You need 20/40 or better, and if you wear glasses or contacts to see far away, you test with them on. Either read the chart at the DMV or have an optometrist or ophthalmologist sign a Vision Examination Card for you to bring.

If you only pass with glasses or contacts, your license will carry that restriction, so wear them every time you drive.

If you fail: the 8 day wait

After a failed attempt you wait at least 8 days and make a new reservation. Spend that time rereading the chapters behind the questions that tripped you up, rather than memorizing answers.

Leave room for that gap when you plan around a birthday or booked lessons. Take a teen who tests on their 16th birthday and fails: no retest for 8 days, so the six month permit clock, and the earliest road test, both slide back by at least that much.

Adults and driver privilege card applicants

Adults skip the classroom but not the exam; it is the same computer test in Cranston. If you once held a Rhode Island license and it has been expired over five years, you are treated as a new applicant and test as well.

Applying for a driver privilege card permit? You still sit a knowledge exam, but your booking goes under Driver Privilege Transactions rather than the standard permit test. Pick the wrong one and the DMV will turn you away and make you rebook.

Rhode Island teen drivers ed: common questions

How long is the Rhode Island permit test?

Forty multiple choice questions, with up to 90 minutes to finish, according to the Rhode Island Driver's Manual.

Where will I take the knowledge exam?

If you are in the CCRI course, at the college. Adults, and teens who used a different approved school, reserve a seat at the DMV's Cranston headquarters.

Can I do the Rhode Island permit test from home?

No. As of October 2026 the knowledge exam is in person only, in Cranston or through CCRI for its students.

Which languages can I take the exam in?

Spanish, Portuguese and English on the computer. For any other language, book first and then request a paper exam through the DMV's online form.

I failed. When can I retake it?

After at least 8 days, with a new reservation.

Does the DMV publish a practice test?

Not that we could find on the DMV permit pages in October 2026. The manual is the official study source, so read every chapter.

What eyesight do I need?

20/40 or better, wearing your glasses or contacts if you use them. Your eye doctor can sign a Vision Examination Card, or you read the chart at the DMV.

What is the passing score?

The DMV's permit pages do not publish one as of October 2026, so ask when you reserve. At CCRI, the course final is the DMV knowledge test and 70% passes.
