Mississippi Drivers Ed for Adults: What to Do and When

Required in some cases

This page is for anyone 17 or older in Mississippi who has never held a license, and for adults moving in from another state. Your decision is when to apply. Today, passing two exams can get you a permit and a Class R license from the same visit. On July 1, 2027 that changes: every first time applicant, whatever their age, will also need proof of a finished drivers ed program certified by the state. Already licensed in another state? Then the course rule is not your concern.

Step by step

  1. Pick your application date

Apply before July 1, 2027 and no course is needed. Apply on that date or later and finish a certified program first, so work backward from the class schedule.

  2. Line up a certified course if you need one

Look into the MDPS statewide program for adults, or call names on the MDPS certified instructor list. File the Certificate of Completion somewhere safe.

  3. Pull your papers together

Bring your certified birth certificate, two documents that show where you physically live, and either your Social Security card or official paperwork showing every digit. If you are not a citizen, immigration documents replace the card.

  4. Book a station and sit the exams

Make a Driver Service Bureau appointment. On the day you take two tests: eyesight, then the knowledge exam on a computer.

  5. Leave with your credentials

From 17 on, one visit can produce both the permit and the license. The license is $24 for a four year card or $47 for eight years.

Before you decide: the July 1, 2027 line

As things stand, adults do not need a course. That changes because Senate Bill 2695 wrote a new condition into Section 63-1-9 for every person who has never held a license, and it sets no age ceiling. Once July 1, 2027 arrives, MDPS will hold back a first license until the applicant shows a certified drivers ed completion, with certification coming from MDPS or the State Board of Education.

Put plainly: if you have been meaning to get licensed, applying before July 1, 2027 keeps the course out of the picture. If your application lands on or after that day, plan and save for the course now, because it becomes a required step.

A worked example: a 24 year old who books an appointment for May 2027 and passes both exams can be licensed without a course. If that appointment slips to September 2027, the course certificate has to be in hand first.

Before you apply: finding an adult course

The 2024 law gave MDPS a second job, beginning July 1, 2026: run a statewide drivers ed program that adults and home schooled students can join if they have never taken one. Graduates get a Certificate of Completion, and MDPS's Driver Service Bureau is sent a record of it.

MDPS also publishes a regional list of certified instructors and schools, and several of them cover the whole state. Phone a few of them. Find out whether they teach adults and how they let the Driver Service Bureau know you finished.

Before you apply: the papers to bring

Bring a completed, signed application and an original or certified birth certificate showing a state seal and certificate number. Photocopies are refused. Your Social Security number can be proven with the card or with official paperwork that shows every digit, for example a DD-214 or a W-2 that was returned to you. If the name you use today is not the one on your birth record, bring the court order, adoption order, divorce decree or marriage license that bridges the two.

Residency takes two documents with a physical address, and according to the Class R page neither may be older than 60 days. Accepted examples include a lease, a pay stub, a bank statement, an insurance policy, or a bill for power, water, phone or internet. With nothing in your own name, ask your landlord, a roommate or a parent to complete the Proof of Domicile Affidavit.

If you are under 21, a parent's residency papers count for you, and that includes the parent's Mississippi license.

On exam day: two tests, possibly one visit

Once you are 17, there is no required stretch of time on a learner's permit. Per the MDPS Learner's Permit page, passing the eye exam and the computerized knowledge test lets you collect both the permit and the license in that same visit.

The knowledge exam is drawn from the MDPS Driver's Manual, a free download or $3 in print at a station. If reading is hard for you, a headset can read the questions aloud. Fail the eye screening and you are given form DE26 to take to an eye doctor.

No road test is given right now. On the Class R page, MDPS states that regular license applicants do not currently take a skills (road) test, and the teen road test waiver form is not needed by anyone 17 or older. Some July 2026 news reports about the new law mentioned a road test coming back, but MDPS has posted nothing of the kind, so look at the Class R page again shortly before your appointment.

After you pass: do not skip practice

No road test does not mean no risk. An adult who has barely driven can get hurt, or hurt someone, in the first week. Paying for a handful of lessons from a certified instructor before your first solo drive is worth it, even though no law makes you do it today.

We found no Mississippi rule requiring insurers to discount premiums for adults who complete drivers ed. Before you sign up, ask your agent whether a certificate will change your rate, and get that in writing if it affects which course you choose.

If you are moving to Mississippi

Once you move, the state gives you 30 days to switch your plates and 60 days to switch your license. Your old license gets turned in; if you have lost it, a notarized Affidavit of Inability to Surrender takes its place.

Holding a valid license from your old state means you skip the knowledge exam and only take the vision screening. If the old license lapsed more than 30 days ago, the computerized test is back on. Anyone transferring from out of state brings a certified birth certificate, two residency proofs, and either an original Social Security card or an SSA printout.

Swapping a valid out of state license does not count as a first license, which means the 2027 drivers ed rule does not apply to you.

If you once had a Mississippi license

Former Mississippi drivers can renew within the six months before the card expires. If more than 60 months have passed since expiration, you take the knowledge exam again.

If English is difficult for you, you can bring an interpreter, who must come with a signed copy of the Mississippi Interpreter Oath.

If you plan to fly: the gold star

REAL ID compliant Mississippi licenses have a gold star printed at the top right. From May 7, 2025 onward, getting on a domestic flight takes that card or a passport.

REAL ID asks for the same birth certificate, Social Security proof and two residency documents you are already bringing. Request the starred card at your first visit and you avoid paying $11 for a duplicate later.

If you are military, a student or a non citizen

Nonresident service members and their families, along with out of state college students, can drive here on a valid home state license. A service member whose Mississippi license runs out while serving elsewhere has 90 days after discharge or returning home to renew, and no late fee applies.

If you are not a citizen, the rules are identical apart from the Social Security card; you show a Permanent Resident Card or current immigration documents. The license runs four years or until the end date of the lawful status, whichever is sooner.

Mississippi adult drivers ed: common questions

I am 30 and have never driven. Do I need a course?

Not if your license is issued before July 1, 2027. After that, any first time applicant, no matter how old, needs a certified drivers ed completion.

Can I walk out with a permit and a license on the same day?

Yes, at 17 or older. MDPS says adults have no waiting period and can receive both once they pass the knowledge and vision exams.

I just moved here. How soon do I need a Mississippi license?

You have 60 days. If your old license is still valid, the knowledge test is skipped and you only do a vision screening.

My license from my old state has expired. Does that change anything?

Yes, if it has been expired over 30 days: you will take the computerized test. Bring the same papers as everyone else, meaning a birth certificate, Social Security proof and two residency documents.

What does an adult license cost?

As of October 2026, a four year Class R license costs $24, an eight year license $47, and a learner's permit $7.

Where do adults find a certified course?

MDPS was told to run a statewide program for adults from July 1, 2026, and it publishes a list of certified instructors. Check that a provider is certified before paying.

Is there a behind the wheel test for adults?

Not right now. MDPS currently gives no skills test for a regular Class R license; you pass a vision check and the computerized knowledge test instead.

How recent do my residency documents need to be?

MDPS says the two proofs for a Class R license can be no more than 60 days old and must list a street address where you live; a P.O. box does not count.

Should I ask for the REAL ID star on my first license?

If you plan to fly without a passport, yes. The documents are the same, and adding it later means an $11 duplicate.
