Points, Suspensions and Your Louisiana Driving Record
This page is for a Louisiana driver who searched for a point reduction class after a ticket, or a parent checking what a teen's ticket means. The key fact: Louisiana never adopted points, which means a ticket adds none and a class subtracts none. OMV records each conviction and suspends licenses for specific conduct, such as DWI, three reckless driving convictions inside 12 months, or ignoring a court date. What you can influence is whether the conviction reaches your record in the first place, so diversion and regular record checks are your tools.

Step by step
Order your official record
Buy it on OMV's Express Lane site by card, entering your details exactly as on your license, or order a copy by mail, paying by money order.
Read every entry
The record lists major and minor violations, DWI, suspensions and convictions. Match it against your court papers and ask the court to fix mistakes.
Deal with open tickets early
Pay, contest or seek diversion before the court date, because an ignored ticket becomes a court suspension and a reinstatement fee.
Ask about diversion
Find out from the prosecutor whether your ticket qualifies, so the moving violation is amended or dismissed rather than posted.
Take a course for insurance, not points
Choose an NSC class or a state approved one on your own; state insurance law allows as much as a 10 percent premium cut afterward.
First: there are no points here
Title 32 of Louisiana's Revised Statutes, which governs licenses, contains no point values, and OMV has never published a schedule or threshold. A speeding conviction in Lafayette and another in Monroe are just two convictions on your record.
With no points, there is no point reduction class either. Anyone advertising a Louisiana point reduction class is offering something with no legal effect here, though the same course might still earn an insurance credit or satisfy a local diversion program.
What your record shows
The official record shows convictions of every size, DWI entries and suspensions, and whether your personal and commercial privileges are valid. Insurance companies and plenty of employers pull it, and a run of moving violations can lift your rates without a single point.
Out-of-state convictions count too. If an offense committed elsewhere, in another state or on federal land, would have cost you your license in Louisiana, R.S. 32:414 lets OMV act on it, and states trade serious violations through national driver databases.
If you are convicted of a suspending offense
Suspension follows conduct, not a tally. The list in R.S. 32:414 includes impaired driving, killing or negligently injuring someone with a vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash with injuries without helping, and a third reckless driving conviction (or forfeited bail) inside a year.
As of October 2026, OMV's published periods for alcohol cases were a year for a first DWI and two years (730 days) for the next. The statute and OMV policy describe reckless driving suspensions differently, so ask OMV how long one would last in your case.
If tickets keep coming: frequent violator reviews
Louisiana can still act on a driver who collects tickets. Subsection (E) of R.S. 32:414 allows an investigation when moving violations pile up often enough to show disregard for the law, or when someone drives recklessly or negligently as a habit. After investigating, the department can suspend, cancel or revoke.
Because no fixed count sets off that review, aim never to stack convictions within a short span. For minors there is an extra risk: the school attendance law lets a school board's report pull a teen's license until they are back in school or 18.
Picture two speeding convictions and a careless driving conviction in one year. No point limit is crossed, because there are none, but that pattern is exactly what a review is designed to catch.
If you ignore a ticket
The most avoidable suspension comes from not appearing or not paying. To clear it, show OMV evidence the matter is dealt with (a receipt, the final disposition, or a continuance setting a new date) and pay to reinstate.
October 2026 reinstatement prices on OMV's site: Louisiana courts $100; courts in other states $60; in lieu suspensions $60; Shreveport City Court $87.50. Check OMV's Driver Reinstatement Status Inquiry before going to an office.
If you drive commercially
CDL holders do face a count, under federal law. Under 49 CFR 383.51, serious violations add up over a 3 year window: going 15 or more over, reckless driving, bad lane changes, tailgating, texting at the wheel of a commercial vehicle. The second one means 60 days off the road commercially, and the third means 120.
Violations in your own car can count when they result in a license suspension. Diversion cannot hide a commercial driver's conviction, and the employer has to be told within 30 days.
Where a course does pay off: insurance
With nothing to remove, a Louisiana driving course earns its keep through premiums. State insurance law (La. R.S. 22:1457) permits a cut of as much as 10 percent on liability and physical damage coverage, if the insurer's data supports it, once the main driver finishes a state approved defensive driving class.
You lose eligibility if a judge ordered the class, if any regular driver of the car skipped it, or if the policy already carries a driver ed discount. Check with your insurer which providers it accepts before enrolling.
Louisiana defensive driving: common questions
How many points will get my Louisiana license suspended?
None, because there is no point system. Suspension follows specific offenses, like DWI, three reckless driving convictions in 12 months or a missed court date, and OMV can review drivers with frequent moving violations.
Is there a class to take points off in Louisiana?
No, because nothing is there to remove. Classes help in other ways: as part of diversion, or for an insurance discount.
How do I see my Louisiana driving record?
Purchase it on Express Lane with a card; you have a month to print it. By mail, pay with a cashier's check or money order.
Do tickets from other states matter?
They can. OMV may suspend you for an offense elsewhere if it would have been a suspending offense in Louisiana.
How long does a ticket stay on my record?
No official answer is published for routine convictions. Phone OMV, (225) 925-6146, about your own record, and ask your insurance company how far back it rates.
Are CDL violations treated differently?
Yes. Two serious violations in 3 years cost a commercial driver 60 days, a third costs 120, and no diversion can hide them.
Can my teen lose a license for skipping school?
Yes. If the school board reports a dropout or chronic absences, the license is suspended until your teen is back on track or 18.
