How to Prepare for the Alabama Permit Test

This page is for a teen (or adult) about to take Alabama's knowledge exam, and for the parent helping them study. The decision is how to prepare, because ALEA gives you only one official resource: the Alabama Driver Manual. The exam is taken on a computer at an ALEA driver license examining office, costs $5 per attempt as of October 2026 (no checks), and can be taken in English, in 11 other languages, or orally. Clear the exam and the eye check, pay for the license, and a Stage I learner license goes home with you.

Step by step

  1. Download today's manual

ALEA's Driver License Manuals page has the current Alabama Driver Manual as a free download. The version posted in 2026 is the November 2024 edition, so recycle any older printed copy lying around the house.

  2. Read all nine chapters, then reread two

Go through the full manual once. Then go back over traffic laws and road signs, and finish by quizzing yourself on point values and the teen license rules at the back.

  3. Pack the documents and the cash

Bring the ID, Social Security, school enrollment and residence papers ALEA asks for, and carry cash or a money order covering $5 for the exam plus the license fee.

  4. Speak up about language or an oral test

Tell the examiner at check in if you want a translated version or the oral exam. Asking up front avoids a wasted trip.

  5. Get through the eye check

If you normally drive in contacts or glasses, have them on. If the examiner refers you to an eye specialist, bring back the specialist's report.

  6. Answer the questions at the station

The test runs on an automated station. Once you pass and pay the fee, the examiner issues your learner license.

  7. Plan the retake if needed

If you miss, ask the examiner when you can return and budget another $5. Use the time on the chapters that tripped you up.

Before you study: do you even need the exam?

ALEA requires the knowledge test from anyone who has never had an Alabama license, and from anyone whose Alabama license expired more than three years ago. New residents usually skip it if their previous state's license lapsed no more than a year ago.

For most teens the exam comes at 15, as part of getting the Stage I learner license with its Y restriction. Applying for the first time at 16 or later? It is the identical exam, drawn from the identical manual.

For a motor driven cycle license at 14 or 15, the study book is the Alabama Motorcycle Manual. The driver manual notes that a teen applying for that license and the car learner license has to pass both exams.

While you study: which chapters to lean on

The November 2024 manual has nine chapters and an appendix. The first chapter explains licensing and the learner license. The second covers how a license can be lost and lists the point system. Chapters 3 and 4 take in turns, alcohol, Alabama's hands-free rule, and how to share the road with trucks, cyclists and motorcycles.

Most learners find the heaviest question load in Chapter 5 (signs, signals, pavement markings, roundabouts) and Chapter 6 (speed limits, right of way, school buses, the Move Over law). The last three chapters move on to freeway driving, darkness, winter weather, hydroplaning and keeping the car maintained.

The back pages are easy points. Both the Parent Teen Driving Agreement and the graduated license summary explain the Stage II limits on passengers, curfew and phones, and those questions are quick for a teen who has read them.

  • Chapter 2: point values, for example 5 for failure to yield
  • Chapter 3: give a bicycle 3 feet when passing
  • Chapter 5: the shapes and colors of regulatory, warning and guide signs
  • Chapter 6: stopping for school buses and moving over for stopped vehicles
  • Appendix: the graduated license summary

While you study: practicing without an official quiz

There is no official practice exam. ALEA's website offers manuals for cars and motorcycles and a road test study guide, and that is all. The manual is your practice material. A simple method that works: turn each heading into a question, and have a parent read them aloud at dinner.

A worked example of a study week: Monday and Tuesday, Chapters 1 and 2; Wednesday, Chapters 3 and 4; Thursday, Chapter 5; Friday, Chapter 6; the weekend, Chapters 7 to 9 and the appendix, then a parent quiz on signs and right of way.

Using an app? Check it against the November 2024 edition, because point values and the hands-free rule have both changed in recent years, and an old question bank can teach a wrong answer.

On test day: what the exam is like

ALEA says the questions cover Alabama traffic laws, road signs and safe driving rules, all taken from the manual. The manual also says automated testing is open to every applicant, so plan on a computer station at the examining office, not a paper sheet.

Neither the manual nor ALEA's license pages give a question count or passing score. You may see 30 questions and 24 correct quoted online, but ALEA does not confirm it; ask the examiner if you want to know. Prepare as though any page could appear, because any page can.

On test day: languages and the oral option

Besides English, the manual names eleven exam languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Arabic, Farsi, Russian, German and French. The district office has the details. If you cannot read or understand the written test, ALEA offers an oral version on its automated equipment.

House Bill 88, filed for the 2026 regular session, would have limited ALEA to English language license exams. Look up how it ended, or just ask the examining office which languages it currently offers, before counting on a translated test.

On test day: the vision screening

Every applicant is screened before a license is issued. If you need corrective lenses, ALEA adds a lens restriction and you must wear them every time you drive, including on your later road test.

If you do not pass, ALEA sends you to a licensed eye specialist. Return with the report, and as long as it says your eyesight is safe for driving, testing continues.

If you fail: the cost of another try

The fee is $5 per knowledge test and checks are refused. A pass means a second payment for the license itself: ALEA's October 2026 figure is $36.25, a bit higher in some counties.

The manual sets no waiting period and no limit on attempts after a failure. Ask the examiner before leaving, plan for another $5, and spend the gap on the chapters you missed.

Alabama teen drivers ed: common questions

What does it cost to take the Alabama permit test?

Five dollars per attempt as of October 2026, without a check. After passing, the learner license itself costs $36.25, give or take small county differences.

Is there an online Alabama permit test I can take at home?

No. The exam happens only in person, on automated testing stations inside ALEA examining offices.

How many questions should I expect?

ALEA does not publish the number. You may see 30 questions with 24 correct quoted elsewhere, so confirm with the examiner and study the whole manual.

Can I take the test in Spanish or another language?

Yes. Spanish is one of eleven non English versions listed in the manual, and an oral exam is available if reading the test is a problem.

I failed. When can I try again?

ALEA's manual names no waiting period. Ask the examiner when you can come back, and bring another $5.

Which book should I study?

Use the November 2024 Alabama Driver Manual from ALEA's website. If you also want a motor driven cycle license, add the Alabama Motorcycle Manual.

Do I need my glasses for the permit test?

Bring them. The vision screening happens at the same visit, and if you need lenses, your license will carry a restriction requiring them.
