Ticket Options in North Carolina When There Is No Traffic School

This page is for North Carolina drivers who just got a ticket and are searching for traffic school. There is no statewide course that dismisses a ticket or keeps it off your record. What you can do is decided in the county that wrote the ticket: the district attorney may agree to a reduction, sometimes after you complete a driving course; a judge may grant a prayer for judgment continued; or you can simply pay a waivable ticket. NCDMV's driver improvement clinic removes points only after a conviction.

Step by step

  1. Read every line of the ticket

Note the county, the court date, and whether the box for waivable is marked. Lost the paper? The state courts' online services can find the case.

  2. Hold off on paying

Payment equals a conviction. Reductions and PJCs only happen in court, so do not pay until you know what is on the table.

  3. Call the prosecutor's office

Ask the DA in the ticket's county whether finishing a driving course earns a reduction, and which courses count. Try to get the answer in writing.

  4. Finish the course before your date

If a course is accepted, complete it and bring the certificate, proof of a valid license and anything else the office asked for.

  5. Be there, or have a lawyer there

A missed date means failure to appear and an NCDMV revocation. If you cannot go, hire a lawyer or contact the clerk beforehand.

  6. Check the outcome in MyDMV

Confirm the final charge and points online, then ask your insurer what the outcome means for insurance points.

First: what North Carolina does and does not offer

Not traffic school as many states know it. No law lets you take a course and have a ticket dismissed as a right, and NCDMV approves no courses for that purpose.

What the state does have is a lot of local discretion. In some counties, district attorneys have run programs that lower a speeding charge (to a lesser speed, say, or a non-moving offense) for drivers who complete a course. These vary by county and change over time, and we could not confirm a current list, so ask the DA where you were cited.

For example, a driver ticketed for 79 in a 65 in one county might be offered a reduction after a course, while the same ticket two counties over gets no offer at all. The only way to know is to ask.

Before you pay: waivable tickets

The chief district court judges publish a yearly list of offenses that can be resolved without going to court. When yours is on it, the officer usually marks the citation and writes in the total due.

Pay by card through the court system's online payment site, by mail, or at the clerk's office in cash, money order or certified check. Paying gives up your right to fight it and produces a guilty or responsible finding that NCDMV records.

Before you pay, find out the license points and insurance points involved. A ticket that looks cheap at the window can cost much more through three to five years of insurance surcharges.

In court: prayer for judgment continued

A PJC means the judge accepts your plea or the finding but never enters judgment. Granting one is the judge's choice.

On insurance, the Department of Insurance says a moving violation PJC normally brings no surcharge. The exception, for PJCs granted from July 1, 2025, is when the owner, principal driver or a licensed household member has had another moving violation PJC within five years; older PJCs look back three years.

Keep in mind that the charge itself stays on the books with a PJC, so it is no substitute for traffic school. Talk to your insurance agent about anyone else in the house who has used one before you ask the judge.

After a conviction: court-ordered classes and the NCDMV clinic

Judges sometimes order a driving class as a condition of a sentence. Separately, NCDMV runs a driver improvement clinic that it can require or let you choose. That clinic is the one thing in state rules that subtracts license points, three per completion, with a five year gap between uses.

You become eligible at 7 points under the normal 12 point system, or at 4 if you are on the stricter 8 point system that follows a reinstatement. The screening conference costs $40 (Form HF-001) and the clinic $83.50 (fee schedule). Dates for 2026 are on NCDMV's suspension page.

If you miss court or cannot pay

Miss court or skip payment and the court tells NCDMV, which mails a notice with your revocation date. The revocation stands until the court reports the ticket paid or resolved, and getting the license back can cost an $83.50 restoration fee plus a $50 service fee.

If money is the problem, the courts have a Motion for Relief, form AOC-CR-415. Hand it to the clerk where the ticket was written and request a hearing. A judge may lower the debt, spread it into installments or forgive it, after which NCDMV is notified to drop the suspension.

If you hold a CDL

Under 49 CFR 384.226, states may not hide, defer or divert a commercial license holder's moving violation, whether you were in a rig or your own sedan. The course deals and PJCs other drivers lean on may be unavailable to you, or may fail to keep the conviction off a CDL record.

Tickets earned while driving a commercial vehicle also score more points. Get advice from a lawyer who handles traffic cases before you plead or pay anything.

North Carolina defensive driving: common questions

Will traffic school get my North Carolina ticket dismissed?

No statewide program does that. Some DAs offer reductions after a course; ask the office in the county that issued the ticket.

Can I take an online course for my ticket?

Only if your county's court or DA accepts that course. NCDMV runs no dismissal course, and its clinic follows a published schedule.

What does waivable mean on my ticket?

It is on the yearly list from the chief district court judges of offenses you can pay without appearing. Paying is a guilty or responsible finding.

Does a PJC dismiss the ticket?

No. Judgment is simply never entered. That often spares you insurance points, provided nobody in the household had another PJC inside the lookback period, but the charge is still there.

Can I get a reduction with a CDL?

Be careful. Federal law prohibits states from hiding or diverting commercial drivers' moving violations, so get a lawyer's view before you accept any deal.

What if I cannot afford the ticket?

Ask the clerk for a hearing on form AOC-CR-415. The judge may shrink the amount, cancel it, or let you pay in installments.

What does it cost to restore a license after failing to appear?

An $83.50 restoration fee, and possibly a $50 service fee, once the court reports the case resolved.
