Ohio Traffic School and Your Ticket: The Real Options

This page is for Ohio drivers who just got a ticket and went looking for traffic school. Ohio has no statewide program that wipes out a ticket or hides it from your record. The decision you face is which of two state courses, if either, fits. The 8 hour remedial course adds a 2 point buffer before suspension. The one hour Distracted Driving Safety Course stands in for the fine and points on a first phone ticket. Local diversion or anything else is the court's call.

Step by step

  1. Study the citation

Note the court, the date to appear or pay, and whether the mandatory appearance box is checked. The court's contact information is printed on the back.

  2. Hold off on paying

Paying the bureau is pleading guilty. If a lesser charge or diversion interests you, speak to the court or the prosecutor before you pay.

  3. Ask what that court offers

Some municipal and county courts have their own programs. Ask whether one covers your charge, what it costs and when it must be done.

  4. Match the state course to the problem

A first phone ticket points to the free Distracted Driving Safety Course. A points squeeze points to the 8 hour remedial class at a school OTSO approves.

  5. Get the proof where it belongs

The phone course certificate goes to the court within 90 days. For the remedial class, have the school log it as taken for the credit rather than under court order.

  6. Look at your record afterward

Once the case closes, order your BMV abstract and confirm the conviction, points and any credit are right.

Before you search for a course: why Ohio is different

Some states let a course keep a ticket from being recorded. Nothing in Ohio law does that. Courts report every conviction to the BMV along with the points the law attaches, and the BMV enters it within 10 days.

What the state provides instead are tools that soften points or swap out one specific penalty. Local courts and prosecutors may still offer diversion, deferred judgment or a reduced charge in their own cases. Those are local calls with no statewide rulebook; the court on your ticket is the one to ask.

Before you pay: how the violations bureau works

Ohio Traffic Rule 13 makes every court run a violations bureau that takes guilty pleas and fines on most tickets. Options include pleading and paying at the window, mailing in the signed ticket with the money, or paying by phone or online if your court offers it. Clerks can discuss installment plans.

Whichever remote method you use, mail, phone or web, the payment counts as a guilty plea and a waiver of trial, signature or no signature. A few charges can never be paid this way and need you in court:

  • OVI, or being in physical control while impaired
  • Leaving a crash scene
  • Driving with no license or a suspended one, if jail is on the table
  • Your third moving violation in a year, if jail is on the table
  • Going around a stopped school bus
  • Drag racing or fleeing police
  • Driving through water that covers the road

For a phone ticket: the Distracted Driving Safety Course

Ohio Revised Code 4511.204 sets the penalty for a first hands-free violation in two years at as much as $150 plus 2 points. Instead, you may complete the one hour state course and get the certificate to the court no more than 90 days after the violation. Do that and there is no fine and no points, although the court may still charge a processing fee.

The charge itself still stands, and repeat offenses inside two years do not qualify. Separately, ORC 4511.991 tacks on as much as $100 when distraction contributed to some other violation, speeding for instance; the same course replaces that add-on if you file proof within 90 days.

Example: you are cited in June for holding your phone, your first such ticket. File the certificate by early September, and the $150 and the 2 points never apply.

For a point problem: the 8 hour remedial course

Carrying between 2 and 11 points? Completing the adult remedial class earns a 2 point credit, which shifts suspension from 12 points to 14. The ticket stays on the record.

State law allows one credit every three years and five over a lifetime, and a course taken on a judge's order earns none. ORC 4510.037 permits approved courses to be taught in a classroom, online, over video conference, or some mix.

If you hold a CDL

Federal rule 49 CFR 384.226 forbids Ohio courts to mask, defer or divert a traffic conviction for anyone holding a CDL or commercial learner's permit, other than parking, weight and equipment defect violations. It applies even when you were driving your own car.

That rules out most plea arrangements that would spare a regular driver. Tell your employer about convictions as federal rules demand, and get a lawyer's advice before pleading to anything that might count as a serious violation.

If you would rather fight it

Contesting starts with a not guilty plea, either at arraignment or in a written filing with the clerk ahead of your citation date. The court schedules a pretrial conference, where many cases settle with a negotiated plea, and sets a trial if they do not.

Skipping a court date risks a license forfeiture or a warrant; phone the clerk to move it instead. A not guilty verdict means no points.

Ohio defensive driving: common questions

Is there traffic school in Ohio that makes a ticket go away?

Not through any state program. Check with your court about local diversion, and consider the two state courses.

Does the distracted driving course cost anything?

It is delivered through Ohio Learn, which needs an OHID login, and OTSO shows no course fee. The court may charge a processing fee.

What is the deadline for the distracted driving certificate?

The court on your case must have it within 90 days of the violation date.

Will paying my ticket online add points?

Yes. An online payment is a guilty plea, so the conviction and points are reported to the BMV.

Can a CDL driver use a course to hide a ticket?

No. Under federal anti-masking rules, a court cannot defer or divert a commercial driver's conviction.

Can the remedial course be done online?

Yes. Ohio law lets approved schools teach it entirely online, over video, face to face or combined.

Can I use the phone course for my second phone ticket?

No. It is available only for a first offense within two years.
