Traffic School in Massachusetts: The Options That Actually Exist
This page is for Massachusetts drivers who just got a ticket and searched for traffic school. The decision you actually face is pay or fight, because the state offers no class of any kind that wipes out a ticket or hides it from your record. Within 20 days you pay or ask a clerk-magistrate to hear you out. Courses do exist, but only as penalties the RMV imposes later; the main one is National Safety Council Driver Retraining, ordered when you build up 3 surchargeable events within 2 years.

Step by step
Find out what kind of citation you have
Read the charges. Civil infractions are handled by the RMV. Anything criminal is handled by the clerk-magistrate at the district court. Some tickets carry both.
On a civil ticket, decide inside 20 days
Either pay it all or ask to be heard. Allow roughly 10 days for the ticket to show up in RMV records before you act.
Get ready for the hearing
Put together pictures, paperwork and the names of anyone who saw what happened. Expect that the officer may not come; the written ticket is evidence by itself.
If you lose, pay the RMV
The money is due at the RMV inside 20 days. Need more time? Ask while you are still in the hearing.
Complete any course the RMV orders
When a suspension notice names a program, finish it ahead of the printed deadline and hang on to your certificate.
First: why there is no traffic school here
Elsewhere in the country, a class can sometimes buy a dismissal. Not here. Under Chapter 90C, a civil motor vehicle infraction ends one of two ways: you pay what the schedule says, or you argue in front of a magistrate that you were not responsible. Lose, or pay, and the finding is reported to the Merit Rating Board as a surchargeable event.
And the magistrate cannot hand you a warning instead. According to the Trial Court, that is a choice only the citing officer can make. Whatever course you finish online beforehand, the hearing outcome stays the same.
Within 20 days: requesting a hearing
Count 20 days from the date on the ticket. Let about 10 of them pass so the RMV has it on file, then appeal on the RMV website, or sign Box 2, enclose $25 by check or money order made out to MassDOT, and post it to the Citation Processing Center at P.O. Box 55890, Boston, MA 02205-5890. Your hearing date arrives by mail from the court.
Blow the deadline and three things happen: the hearing is gone, late and release charges are added, and a default letter comes. Still unpaid 30 days after that letter, and the RMV suspends your license. Win on every count of a citation written after September 22, 2017, and the $25 is refunded, generally within 90 days.
On hearing day
Expect video. Many courts run these hearings on Zoom now. Strict courtroom evidence rules are set aside, and the magistrate simply weighs whether each civil violation is more likely true than not. Tell your side, show what you brought, call your witnesses, and, with the magistrate's permission, put questions to the officer.
Cannot make it? Call or write to the clerk-magistrate's office and ask for a new date. A second postponement is unusual unless something truly urgent comes up. No-show without good cause, and the full ticket is due within 20 days. A magistrate's ruling can sometimes go to a judge on appeal; the clerk can explain the route.
If the ticket is criminal: a separate track
One criminal charge on the ticket changes everything; the RMV cannot take your payment for it. Chapter 90C, Section 3 gives you 4 days to write to the district court clerk-magistrate and ask to be heard before any complaint is filed. That session is called a show cause hearing, and its purpose is to decide whether a criminal complaint should go ahead.
Miss it and a summons orders you before a judge. Ignore the summons and the consequences stack up: suspension of your license, a warrant for your arrest, added fees, and holds placed on tax refunds and benefits. Get legal advice on any criminal driving charge.
Later: courses the RMV can order
If anything here resembles traffic school, it is Driver Retraining. Collect 3 surchargeable events in 2 years, counting tickets from other states, and the RMV mails a suspension notice. From then you get 90 days to complete either the National Safety Council program or the Massachusetts Driver Retraining Program. NSC sends a packet inside 10 days and notifies the RMV when you are done.
Drivers under 18 can be ordered into two more. One is an attitudinal retraining course, for instance the 4 hour Alive at 25. The other, after a speeding or drag racing finding, is the State Courts Against Road Rage program. Both have to be done to get the license back; neither replaces the suspension.
For commercial drivers
If you have a CDL, a class cannot keep a conviction off your record. Federal rule 49 CFR 383.31 gives you 30 days to notify your employer in writing after a moving violation conviction, whatever you were driving at the time. For professional drivers, contesting the ticket at the hearing is the main lever.
When a voluntary course still makes sense
Signing up for a defensive driving or mature driver class on your own leaves the ticket and your event count exactly where they were. It can still be worth it after a near miss, purely for the skills. Do not count on a premium cut: we found no official Massachusetts rule obliging insurers to give one, so get your insurer's answer in writing first.
Massachusetts defensive driving: common questions
Is there traffic school in Massachusetts?
Not in the ticket-dismissal sense. Nothing you can sign up for erases a ticket; your choices are paying or contesting it at a magistrate hearing.
Will an online defensive driving course get my ticket dropped?
No. A class is not accepted in place of the ticket by the courts or the RMV, and the magistrate has no power to downgrade it to a warning.
Which course does the RMV order after too many tickets?
Reach 3 surchargeable events in 2 years and you must complete NSC's course or the Massachusetts Driver Retraining Program in the 90 days after the notice.
How do I ask for a hearing on a civil ticket?
Inside the 20 day window, appeal on the RMV site, or sign Box 2 and mail the ticket with $25 (check or money order to MassDOT).
What is Alive at 25?
A four hour class from the National Safety Council aimed at drivers aged 16 to 24, and one of the RMV's approved attitudinal courses for junior operators.
Is the $25 refunded if I win?
It is, when the citation is dated after September 22, 2017 and every violation on it goes your way. Allow about 90 days.
Can I reschedule my hearing?
Contact the clerk-magistrate's office, possibly in writing. A second postponement is rarely given without a real emergency.
