Studying for the New Jersey MVC Knowledge Test
This page is for anyone getting ready for what New Jersey calls the permit test, which is really the MVC knowledge test. The choice in front of you is how to study. Expect 50 scored questions and one extra survey question about organ donation; 40 right answers, or 80 percent, is a pass. From 17 you sit it with a vision screening at an MVC Driver Testing Center once you have bought an examination permit, and a fail sends you home for 7 days. Every question is drawn from the free 2026 New Jersey Driver Manual.
- Number of questions
- 50, plus an organ donation survey question
- To pass
- 40 right (80 percent)
- Location
- MVC Driver Testing Center, by appointment (16 year olds: check with the school)
- Written languages

- What to study
- 2026 New Jersey Driver Manual, Chapters 1 to 9
Step by step
Get the permit that matches your age
For a 16 year old, the special learner's permit is purchased by the driving school or school instructor. Anyone 17 or older buys the examination permit in person at an MVC Licensing Center, bringing documents worth 6 Points of ID.
Book the test
With the permit in hand, make a knowledge test appointment. Only some MVC sites test, so choose a Licensing Center that includes a Driver Testing Center.
Study the manual and try the sample
Get the 2026 manual from the MVC website and work through the sample questions online. Give extra attention to GDL rules, road signs and alcohol limits.
Arrange language help in advance
Tell the MVC you need an interpreter two weeks or more before the test. For applicants who are deaf or hard of hearing, an MVC approved interpreter costs nothing.
Pass the eye check and the 50 questions
If glasses get you to 20/50, wear them. Get 40 or more of the 50 right; otherwise, the earliest retest is 7 days out.
Before you study: who takes it and when
No first-time New Jersey driver gets to practice before passing this test. On the 16 year old route, the instructor buys the special learner's permit for a student enrolled in an approved course. The MVC contradicts itself on where that student tests: the First Driver License page says at the school, the Driver Manual says at the MVC ahead of validation. The school will know which. From 17, an applicant can buy the examination permit and test at an MVC testing center with no school involved.
People licensed in another country take the same knowledge test and eye screening, and the manual keeps those results good for two years. On the other hand, a driver 18 or older bringing a valid, non-provisional license from another U.S. state may not have to take the knowledge or road test at all.
Booking at an MVC location
The sequence the MVC gives is: go to a driver testing center with your 6 Points of ID, buy the examination permit, and then set up the knowledge test appointment. The manual says most agencies handle both knowledge tests and eye screenings. To find out which Licensing Centers offer testing, look on the MVC site or call (609) 292-6500.
When appointments are scarce, you may need one visit to buy the permit and a second to test. Carry the same documents each time. Anyone under 21 should also bring $4, because the MVC hands out the pair of GDL decals together with the permit.
Weeks before: the manual chapters that matter
There are 12 chapters in the 2026 manual. Chapter 2 explains testing itself. Skip Chapter 10, the motorcycle manual, and Chapters 11 and 12, which describe safety programs and office locations. For a car permit, put your effort into the first nine chapters, and give Chapters 4, 5 and 6 the most.
A three week plan: in week one, read Chapters 1 to 3; in week two, read Chapters 4 to 6 twice; in week three, finish Chapters 7 to 9 and do the sample test.
- Chapter 1: how the New Jersey license system works, including permits, GDL, decals and hour limits
- Chapter 2: testing, from documents to the eye, knowledge and road tests
- Chapter 3: a driver's responsibilities
- Chapter 4: rules of safe driving, such as signs, speed, turns and who has the right of way
- Chapter 5: defensive driving
- Chapter 6: alcohol, drugs and health
- Chapter 7: privileges and penalties, including suspensions, points and surcharges
- Chapters 8 and 9: sharing the road with others, and vehicle information
Using the MVC's sample test
On its website the MVC offers 17 sample questions, each multiple choice, with the answers supplied, as a taste of the written test. A handful focus on New Jersey's GDL rules, for example the blood alcohol reading at which a driver under 21 is considered impaired, and the hours of the day a special learner's permit holder is allowed to practice.
Getting 17 right does not prove you can handle 50, so use the sample to learn the format. Once every sample answer makes sense to you, reread the manual a chapter at a time and test yourself on the figures: how far to follow, how far to park from things, fines and point values.
If you need another language or an interpreter
You can read the test in English or Spanish, and also in French, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Albanian, Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Korean or Mandarin Chinese; the manual lists American Sign Language too. For applicants who cannot read any language, the MVC offers a spoken version through headphones, in Spanish or English.
If none of those is your language, the manual asks you to try the test once in an available language first. If that does not work, the MVC books an interpreter from the court system's registry and pays for it, and its website warns those slots usually run four to six weeks out. Applicants who are deaf or hard of hearing may bring an approved interpreter, whom the MVC pays after a voucher is filed.
If you only want to ride an e-bike
From July 2026, a New Jersey e-bike rider who is 15 or older and has no driver's license needs the e-bike and moped license, and getting it starts with a separate knowledge test. That exam, the MVC says, pulls from two books, the 2026 E-bike and Moped Manual and the regular Driver Manual, and skips local ordinances.
The process looks a lot like the car permit. File form BA-208, show 6 Points of ID, add a parent's consent if the applicant is under 18, and pass the knowledge and eye tests; after a fail, wait 7 days. Until January 2027 the $5 exam fee is waived. The road test comes 20 to 45 days after validation.
After the test: fees and next steps
As of October 2026, the car permits cost $10 each and stay valid for two years, and a pair of decals is $4. A failed knowledge test means booking again after 7 days. A failed eye screening is handled separately: an eye doctor completes Form ST-14 for you to bring back.
Once you pass, what happens next depends on the permit. On an examination permit at 17, supervised practice can begin immediately. On a special learner's permit, the student first completes six hours of driving with the school, and only then is the permit validated. Drivers under 21 must then hold it for at least six months before the road test, while anyone 21 or older at permit issue needs three months.
New Jersey teen drivers ed: common questions
How long is the New Jersey permit test?
Fifty scored questions and one organ donation survey question. A score of 40, or 80 percent, passes.
Can I take it from home?
No. It is given in person, by appointment, at an MVC Driver Testing Center, and only after you have bought a permit.
Which languages can I take it in?
Thirteen written languages including English and Spanish, plus ASL. If you cannot read, a spoken version is available in English or Spanish.
I failed. How soon can I go again?
After 7 days. Spend that week rereading the manual chapters behind the questions you missed.
Is there an official practice test?
Yes. The MVC website has 17 sample questions, and the answers are provided.
My teen just wants an e-bike. Is there a test?
Yes, if the rider is 15 or older and unlicensed. Both a knowledge test and an eye test come with the e-bike and moped permit, and the $5 fee is not charged until January 2027.
Which chapters should I spend the most time on?
The first nine chapters of the 2026 manual, especially 4, 5 and 6.
