Studying for the Arkansas Permit Knowledge Test
This page is for a teen or adult in Arkansas getting ready for the written permit test, and for the parent quizzing them at the kitchen table. The decision is when you are ready to book, since every attempt costs money. The Arkansas State Police give this exam at troop testing sites found in every county; the revenue office that sells licenses has nothing to do with it. Book online, study the State Police study guide (the English edition was revised on October 6, 2026), and pass the knowledge exam plus an eye test. Act 1289 of 2015 charges $5 per written exam, and DFA adds those fees to your bill when the license is issued.

Get the newest guide
Download the study guide from the State Police Driver Examination page. Check the date on the cover: the English edition put up in October 2026 reads 10/06/2026.
Practice only with official tools
Use the State Police practice test online, or the AR Driver Testing app from the Apple or Google store. The State Police say they have no tie to outside practice test websites.
Choose the correct appointment
Use the State Police online scheduler. Pick the instruction permit test, or the learning differences appointment if you need the exam read aloud.
Fill the folder
Pack the items on the checklist for your age group, a parent or a signed ASP-33 for a minor, and proof of residency if the birth certificate comes from a neighboring state.
Take the eye check, then the exam
The examiner screens vision first and gives the knowledge test second. A pass starts a two year permit.
Budget for retakes
Each attempt adds $5. You pay the total to DFA with the license, not at the troop site.
Before you study: who sits this exam
If you want an instruction permit and have no Arkansas license, you take this test, and the earliest age is 14. Adults who have never driven take the very same exam, bringing the adult version of the State Police checklist: two primary documents, or one primary and one secondary.
A handful of places have reciprocity that exempts their drivers from testing, Germany and Manitoba in Canada among them. Those drivers go to DFA rather than sitting the exam.
Before you study: booking your seat
Each highway patrol troop commander sets the testing calendar for the counties in that troop, and the State Police say every county in Arkansas hosts license testing. Reserve through telegov.egov.com/aspdlskills, where open times are listed by troop location.
Pay attention to appointment types. The instruction permit test slot also handles motorcycle exams. If you are not a citizen and hold immigration papers, that is the slot to pick, because it builds in extra examiner time. A separate learning differences appointment books an oral exam, though some sites do not offer it.
While you study: what to focus on
The study guide tells you directly that knowing it well improves your odds on the written exam and the road test alike. The Driver Examination page does not say how many questions there are or what score passes, so do not skip any chapter.
Give Chapter 2 extra hours. Along with signals, signs, turning right on red, railroad crossings and pavement markings, it covers work zone safety and has its own question and answer section. The 2026 edition adds the story of a road worker who was killed on Interstate 30 in 2025.
A simple plan for a 14 year old: one chapter a night for a week and a half, the official practice test every weekend, and Chapter 2 again the night before. Parents, ask questions out loud during car rides; signs and markings stick better when your teen sees them on the real road.
- Chapter 1, state law: seat belts, child passengers, school buses and the Move Over law
- Chapter 2: railroad crossings, signs, signals and work zones
- Chapter 3: roundabouts, right of way, turns and lanes
- Chapter 4: the distracted driving law and safe driving
- Chapter 5: changing speed, signaling and using lights
- Chapters 6 through 9: emergencies, fitness to drive, motorcycles, bicycles and trucks
On test day: the eye screening
State law makes a vision test part of every permit and license. Score 20/40 without correction and you qualify for an unrestricted license; 20/70 wearing glasses or contacts qualifies you for a restricted one.
The vision result stays valid for a year. If you are handed an ASP-90 referral, it can only be completed by an optometrist practicing in Arkansas, so make that appointment in state before you try to rebook.
If you fail: what retakes cost
Under Act 1289 of 2015, every written examination carries a $5 fee, and the study guide says the number of exam fees charged at license time has no cap. That fee is separate from any duplicate fee.
DFA collects all of it at the end, so a teen who needs three tries will find $15 in exam fees on the revenue office bill. The State Police page lists no waiting period between attempts; ask the examiner when you may book again.
If English is not your first language, or reading is hard
Besides the English guide, the State Police post a Spanish edition dated January 2018, a Vietnamese edition dated February 2024, and audio testing instructions. The Spanish guide is several years older than the English one, so Spanish readers should check newer material, like the work zone and distracted driving sections, against the English edition.
If you have a learning difference, the scheduler can book you an oral exam with an examiner. Call the troop ahead of time, because some locations do not offer it.
After you pass: the permit and two wheel options
A pass on the written and eye tests gets you the instruction permit. It is good for two years from the exam date and cannot be renewed, and every passenger buckles up whenever a permit holder is driving.
Teens aged 14 to 16 who want to ride a motor driven cycle or motorized bicycle take two written exams, the standard driver test and the motorcycle test, plus an eye check and a motorcycle riding test. For the Class MD license, a passed written exam counts for one year.
Arkansas teen drivers ed: common questions
Where in Arkansas do I take the permit test?
At a State Police driver testing site. Every county has testing, and you book through the State Police online scheduler.
What does each attempt at the Arkansas permit test cost?
Five dollars per written exam under Act 1289 of 2015, as of October 2026. DFA adds the fees to the price of your license.
How many questions will I get?
The State Police do not list a question count on the Driver Examination page. Prepare with the official practice test and the October 2026 study guide.
Is there a practice test from the State Police themselves?
Yes, online and in the AR Driver Testing app for Apple and Android. The State Police say they are not connected to outside practice test sites.
Can someone read the test to me?
At some sites, yes. Book the Driver's License Test for Learning Differences appointment and an examiner gives the exam orally.
Once I pass, how long is the permit good for?
Two years from the day you pass the written exam, with no renewal or extension.
Is the Spanish study guide up to date?
It is dated January 2018, years older than the October 2026 English edition, so compare newer sections such as work zones and distracted driving with the English guide.
