Getting Ready for the Ohio BMV Permit Test

This page is for anyone in Ohio about to sit the knowledge test for a temporary instruction permit. The test is 40 multiple choice questions on traffic signs and motor vehicle regulations, and 30 correct, or 75 percent, passes. You can take it at home online, at some deputy registrar offices or at any BMV driver exam station. Your key decision is where, because the retake rules differ: in person you can try again after 24 hours as often as needed, while online you get two attempts in six months.

Step by step

  1. Download the manual

It is on the BMV's documents page as the Ohio Driver Manual, also titled the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws. Spend most of your time on the regulations and the sign pages.

  2. Try the BMV's 10 question sample

The Sample Driver License Knowledge Test is written in the same style as the real thing. Let your wrong answers tell you what to reread.

  3. Choose where to test

Online spares you a trip but caps you at two tries in six months. In person, at an exam station or one of the deputy registrars that test, you can go again every 24 hours.

  4. Pass the test and the eye check

Exam stations do both. If you tested at home, the deputy registrar screens your vision when you buy the permit.

  5. Buy the permit within 60 days

A deputy registrar issues it once you show documents and pay. After 60 days the pass expires and you test again.

Before you study: how the test is scored

The BMV describes a 40 question multiple choice exam on road signs and Ohio's vehicle laws with a 75 percent pass mark. Put simply, 10 misses still pass and the eleventh fails.

No separate sign score is required, and the BMV publishes no clock for in-person testers. Still, every time the BMV describes the test it names signs alongside the laws, so expect plenty of them.

While you study: the manual

Your study text is the Ohio Driver Manual, which still carries its formal title, the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws. The BMV and OTSO alike tell applicants to read it, because the questions are drawn from its rules and sign pages.

According to the Ohio Legislative Service Commission's December 2025 bill analysis, the BMV posts the manual in Haitian Creole, Somali, Spanish, and English print and audio. A bill from the 136th General Assembly, House Bill 616, would make the BMV publish it in each language the test comes in. Check the bill's status before counting on new translations.

A study plan that works for most teens: one section of the manual a night for a week, the sample test on day one and day seven, and a family quiz on signs during car rides.

While you study: the official practice quiz

Ohio offers exactly one official practice test, called the Sample Driver License Knowledge Test, on the BMV website. Its 10 questions cover things like what a flashing red signal means, whose signature a minor's application needs, who goes first when two cars reach an intersection together and when you may turn right on red.

At a quarter of the real length it is a quick check, not a rehearsal. Do it once before studying and once after. Fewer than 8 correct means you are flirting with the 75 percent line.

Before you book: online or in person

What happens after a fail is the biggest difference. In person, you wait at least 24 hours and may take the test as many times as you need.

Online you get two attempts per six months, per the BMV. The company that runs online testing words it a little differently in its FAQ, as two tries per test type and then a 120 day ban. If you have already failed online once, switching to an exam station is the safer choice. Two online fails do not stop you testing in person the following day.

If you test in person

You can test at any BMV driver exam station and at a handful of deputy registrar offices. Use the Department of Public Safety's locator to see which, before driving across town.

Exam stations also handle paper tests, interpreter-proctored tests in languages the BMV lacks, and the moped and motorcycle knowledge tests, none of which are available online. If you need special assistance during testing, plan on an exam station as well.

After you pass: 60 days to buy the TIPIC

A pass is not yet a permit. After the test and eye check, a deputy registrar sells you the TIPIC itself, $26.50 as of October 2026.

Buy it within 60 days or the pass lapses and you repeat the test and the vision screening. Teens should arrange for the parent or guardian, who signs for anyone under 18, before making the trip.

If you are an adult or a returning driver

Adults face the same 40 questions and the same 75 percent. What differs is afterward: at 18 and over there is no six month permit wait before the road test, and no parent signature.

An Ohio license that has been expired for over six months sends you back to the permit and the knowledge test. Newcomers holding another state's license should check with an exam station on which tests they face; that active out-of-state license also rules out testing online.
