Managing License Points in North Carolina

This page is for North Carolina drivers watching their point total climb. The question is how close you are to a suspension and what can bring the number down. NCDMV adds points after convictions, from 1 for littering out of a vehicle up to 5 for passing a stopped school bus. Twelve within three years can suspend you. The only early relief is NCDMV's driver improvement clinic, worth 3 points once every five years. Insurance points are counted on a different scoreboard altogether.

Step by step

  1. Look up your total

MyDMV shows your status and points for free. Points are tied to the date of the offense.

  2. Watch for 7

That is when you can request a driver improvement clinic, and NCDMV may write to you once you qualify.

  3. Ask for the conference

Send in form HF-001 to request the screening conference. In October 2026 it cost $40, and you can file it on the web, by post or in person.

  4. Complete the clinic

Pay $83.50, attend a scheduled session and finish satisfactorily. Your record drops by 3.

  5. Answer any suspension notice

Reaching 12 brings a letter from NCDMV. You can often challenge a suspension, or get it cut, by requesting an administrative hearing; expect a separate fee.

When a conviction is reported: how points land

Once a court reports a conviction, NCDMV adds points according to the offense. Convictions in other states come back to NCDMV and count as if they happened here.

Suspension decisions look at a three year window, measured by offense date. So a 2024 ticket that is not decided until 2026 still sits on your record as a 2024 offense.

Worked example: a 4 point tailgating conviction, a 3 point red light conviction and a 2 point moving violation add up to 9. That is past the 7 point eligibility mark, so you could request the clinic; finishing it would bring you to 6 and buy room before any next ticket.

What common tickets cost

These values are from the NCDMV handbook for drivers in an ordinary passenger vehicle.

  • 5: passing a school bus that has stopped; aggressive driving
  • 4: reckless driving; hit and run with property damage only; tailgating; driving left of center; illegal passing; not yielding to a pedestrian, bicycle, scooter or motorcycle
  • 3: stop sign or red light; a speeding conviction above 55 mph; failure to yield; no license, or one expired more than a year; not stopping for a siren; no liability insurance; not reporting a crash; speeding in a school zone
  • 2: child not properly restrained, and every moving violation not listed elsewhere
  • 1: throwing litter from a vehicle
  • None: illegal parking, registration or plate problems, a bad muffler, an expired inspection, overload or oversize

When points lead to suspension

Reach 12 in three years and you face a suspension. Lengths escalate: two months, then half a year, then twelve months for the third and every later one. After a reinstatement the trigger drops to 8 within three years.

Reinstatement wipes the slate, canceling all earlier license points. Getting a suspended license back costs $83.50 for restoration, plus a $50 service fee unless you handed in the license before the suspension started.

Speed can take the license regardless of totals. Clock more than 55 mph while also being over 15 above the limit and you lose it for a month or longer. Pick up two convictions for going above 55 inside one year and it is 60 days.

Before you hit 12: the clinic step by step

Point credit requires three things: qualifying, a meeting with an administrative hearings officer, and attending and completing a clinic. Form HF-001, revised February 27, 2026, prices the conference at $40, and the fee schedule prices the clinic at $83.50.

Finishing removes 3 points, and you can attend for credit only once every five years. NCDMV posts each year's clinic schedule on its license suspension page.

Private online defensive driving courses do not touch NCDMV points. Before buying one, make sure a court or DA asked for it, or that your insurer will give you credit.

Insurance points: a separate count

Your insurer counts differently, using the Department of Insurance's Safe Driver Incentive Plan. Its numbers are not the same as NCDMV's, and the clinic does nothing to them.

Two examples from the plan's scale: a minor speeding ticket, no more than 10 over on a road posted under 55, is worth a single insurance point; reckless driving or a school bus pass is worth four. Expect a surcharge for three policy years in most cases, stretching to five for certain convictions of 4 points or more dated July 1, 2025 or later.

For teens and commercial drivers

Under 18, the count that matters is moving violations within a year, not points. The second costs a month, the third three months, the fourth six. And any moving, belt or phone conviction resets the six month clock before the next GDL step.

In a commercial vehicle the scale is steeper: a school bus pass is worth 8 and speeding above 55 is worth 4, and the fines for those can double.

Checking your record

MyDMV shows your status and current points free. For a copy, NCDMV charges $12.75 for a limited or complete driving record extract and $18 for a certified true copy, as of October 2026.

Give the court a few weeks, then review your record. Mistakes happen: a charge you got reduced may post as the original one, or a dismissed case may show points. The clerk of court in the county that heard the case is who corrects it.

North Carolina defensive driving: common questions

How many points cost you your license in North Carolina?

Twelve within three years, or eight within three years after a reinstatement. Some high speed offenses suspend you without reaching either total.

How do I get points off my record?

Complete an NCDMV driver improvement clinic, worth 3 points once every five years. Reinstatement after a suspension also clears all points.

How many points is a speeding ticket?

Three if you were going above 55 mph, and three for breaking a school zone limit. Below 55 and outside school zones, speeding is usually a general moving violation worth 2.

Will an online defensive driving course lower my points?

No. Only the NCDMV clinic reduces license points.

How long do points count?

Suspensions look at a three year window, and reinstatement cancels everything. Insurance points follow their own three or five year surcharge period.

Where can I see my points?

MyDMV, for free, or order a record extract from NCDMV for $12.75.

My dismissed ticket shows points. What do I do?

Contact the clerk of court in the county that handled the case and ask them to correct what was reported to NCDMV.
