Behind-the-Wheel Hours in New Jersey, From First Lesson to Road Test
This page is for New Jersey parents planning the driving hours. The question is how to fit professional lessons and family practice into the permit months. The professional part is short: a teen who starts at 16 on a special learner's permit drives 6 hours beside a licensed instructor in a car with dual controls. The family part is longer. Every driver under 21 with a permit dated February 1, 2025 or later must rack up 50 or more supervised hours, at least 10 in darkness, over a practice period of 6 months or more, and certify them on form BA-CSD.
- Instructor hours, 16 year old route
- 6, dual-control car
- Family hours, under 21
- 50, including 10 after dark
- Accepted proof
- Form BA-CSD and nothing else
- Shortest practice period
- 6 months, or 3 at 21 and over
- Supervisor
- 21+, New Jersey license, 3 years experience
- Parent instead of the 6 hours
- Not allowed
Step by step
Get the 6 instructor hours done
On the 16 year old route, your teen drives 6 hours with the licensed instructor in a dual-control car before the permit is validated. Next, a parent or the school takes the permit for validation at an MVC agency that handles driver testing.
Pick your supervisors
Line up one or more adults aged 21 and up who hold a valid New Jersey license and have been driving for three years or longer. Only they sit up front during practice.
Write down every drive
Note the date, the time, the minutes and the conditions. The log in the Share the Keys guide works for this, but it is your record, not proof the MVC will accept.
Spread out the 10 night hours
Schedule dark-hour drives across all six months instead of piling them up at the end. They count toward the 50.
Fill in form BA-CSD
Once the 50 hours are in, a supervising driver, parent or guardian completes and signs the BA-CSD. The probationary license will not be issued unless that form comes with you.
Book the road test
Pick a date 6 or more months past the knowledge test (3 months for anyone 21 or over when the permit was issued). The car must be insured, inspected, registered and wearing decals, unless you use a school car.
Before practice starts: who needs professional lessons
Professional training is mandatory only on the 16 year old route. Per the MVC's young adult page, the special learner's permit cannot be validated for practice until your teen has driven a dual-control vehicle for 6 hours with a licensed instructor.
Teens who begin at 17 with an examination permit, and adults, have no required professional hours. Lessons still make sense when no qualified supervisor is around, or when you want a school car on test day.
What to expect from a licensed school
Both the school and each instructor hold MVC licenses. Every training car must have dual controls and Student Driver signs front and rear. Schools also post a surety bond, carry insurance, and hold onto student files for three years.
Before you sign, find out how the 6 hours are broken into lessons, who schedules the road test, and whether the school's car can be used for it. You can check a school against the licensed list linked from the MVC's school licensing page.
During the permit months: the 50 hour rule
The hour count is new. A law signed on January 8, 2024 led the MVC to set the 50 hour, 10 in darkness requirement for drivers under 21 holding permits dated February 1, 2025 or later. Earlier permit holders had a minimum practice period but no hour total.
What matters is the permit date, not the birthday. So someone issued a permit at 20 who reaches the license counter at 21 still owes the certification.
Signing off: form BA-CSD
The MVC leaves no room for doubt here. Form BA-CSD, the Certification of Supervised Driving, is the one document that satisfies the hours requirement. The Driving Hours Certification Form printed in the Share the Keys guide does not.
Still, write down every drive with dates. Should anyone, the MVC or your insurance company, question the hours, the log supports the signature.
On every practice drive
The supervisor sits next to the driver. Parents, guardians and the supervisor's own children may come along, and beyond them a single extra passenger is the limit unless a parent or guardian is also riding.
No phone or other interactive device may be used, hands-free included; everyone wears a seat belt, and drivers under 21 show the red decals on both plates. Breaking these rules is a $100 fine.
A six month practice plan
Fifty hours in six months is about two hours a week. Start with empty parking lots and quiet neighborhoods. When basic control is solid, work up to the Parkway or the Turnpike, wet roads and driving at night.
Here is one way to split it: 15 hours of lots and neighborhoods in the first two months, 20 hours of busier roads and highways in months three and four, and the last 15 on night driving, rain and road test rehearsal.
Drill the road test items: parallel parking, the K-turn, reversing, using signals and coming to complete stops. The test itself lasts about 10 to 15 minutes, so clean basics count for more than long trips.
On road test day
Your teen arrives with the permit, ID documents worth 6 points and a qualified licensed adult. The test car needs current registration, inspection and insurance plus decals front and back; self-parking cars and illegal tint are refused.
From the passenger seat, the examiner has to be able to reach the foot brake or the parking brake. A backup camera is no problem. After a fail, book again no sooner than 14 days out.
New Jersey teen drivers ed: common questions
How much driving with an instructor is required?
Six hours on the 16 year old route. Separately, drivers under 21 with permits dated from February 1, 2025 log 50 supervised hours, 10 of them after dark.
Can I teach my teen instead of paying a school?
You can supervise the 50 hours. You cannot stand in for the instructor during the 6 required hours on the 16 year old route, though a teen starting at 17 has no instructor requirement.
Will the MVC accept the Share the Keys log?
No. It is fine for tracking drives, but the only accepted proof is form BA-CSD.
I am 22 with a new permit. Do I owe 50 hours?
No, as long as the permit was issued after your 21st birthday. Your minimum practice is 3 months rather than 6.
Can a grandparent be the supervisor?
Yes. Grandparents qualify like anyone else: 21 or older, a valid New Jersey license, and three years or more behind the wheel.
Can we use the driving school's car for the test?
Yes. School cars are allowed at the test, and plenty of schools offer a road test package.
How many of the 50 hours have to be at night?
At least 10, driven after dark.
