Points and Surcharges in Massachusetts: What Counts Against You

This page is for Massachusetts drivers trying to work out where they stand after a ticket or a crash. The usual question is whether anything can shrink the damage. The honest answer is no class can. Massachusetts keeps no running license point total and offers no point reduction course. Every responsible finding and at-fault crash is logged as a surchargeable event; the RMV counts those to decide suspensions, and insurers on the Safe Driver Insurance Plan price them at 2 to 5 surcharge points. Time is the only thing that wears them down.

Minor violation
2 surcharge points
Major violation
5 surcharge points
3 speeding tickets in any 12 months
30 day suspension
3 events in 2 years
Required retraining course
7 events in 3 years
60 day suspension
Habitual traffic offender
4 year suspension
Course that removes points
None

Step by step

  1. Order your driving record

Use a MyMassGov account to buy it from the RMV online. Unless a court needs it, the cheaper unattested copy is fine.

  2. List your events by date

Note the date of every responsible finding and at-fault crash, then see which of the 12 month, 2, 3 and 5 year windows each one sits in.

  3. Find out your insurer's plan

Ask whether your carrier follows the SDIP or runs its own merit rating plan; your premium depends on the answer.

  4. Act quickly on any RMV notice

A three-event notice starts a 90 day clock for retraining. Beat the date printed on it and you are never suspended.

  5. Contest tickets you did not earn

Because nothing removes an event afterward, a hearing is your one chance to keep it off. Ask for it inside 20 days.

First: events, not license points

What the RMV tallies are surchargeable events. Each civil violation you are found responsible for counts, each crash you caused counts, and ones from other states count too. The number of events, and how tightly they bunch together, is what triggers a suspension. The point values attached to them mainly move your insurance bill.

That is why you will hear people say there are no points in Massachusetts. There are, but your license is put at risk by events stacking up inside a window rather than by one number creeping upward.

How many points each incident carries

The Safe Driver Insurance Plan prices incidents by type. One incident that generates several surcharges is still scored as a single incident. The SDIP reaches four coverages: bodily injury, personal injury protection, property damage, and collision if you carry it.

  • Major violation: 5 points
  • At-fault crash, major: 4 points
  • At-fault crash, minor: 3 points
  • Minor violation: 2 points

The windows that lead to a suspension

Each of these suspensions is mandatory, and the habitual offender one is the only one where a hardship license is possible. If two suspensions of the same kind overlap, they are served together. Crashes are not counted when the RMV decides whether you are a habitual offender.

  • Any 12 months, 3 speeding tickets: 30 days
  • 2 years, 3 surchargeable events: NSC or Driver Retraining inside 90 days, or suspended until finished
  • 3 years, 7 surchargeable events: 60 days, starting 30 days after notice
  • 5 years, 3 major or 12 total moving violations: 4 years as a habitual traffic offender
  • 3 convictions for no transparent window: 90 days

A worked example

Imagine a speeding finding in March 2025, a minor at-fault crash in January 2026 and a stop sign finding in October 2026. That is 3 surchargeable events inside 2 years, so expect an RMV suspension notice and a National Safety Council packet. Finish the course within 90 days and the suspension never starts, but all 3 events stay on your record.

If that driver collects 4 more events before March 2028, the 7 in 3 years rule brings a 60 day suspension, and no course prevents it.

Over time: how events and points fade

Insurers on the SDIP review six policy years, and nothing in the earliest of the six adds points. A lone minor, non-criminal violation inside the five years ahead of your policy start date is free of points too, as long as it really is the only one.

Then there is Clean in 3. You lose a point off every incident when three conditions all hold: no more than 3 incidents in five years, nothing new for at least three years, and at least three years of driving experience. Go five or six years with no incidents and you move into the Excellent Driver Discount tiers. None of these breaks apply while your license is revoked or invalid.

Can a class bring points down?

No. Several states knock points off for a defensive driving class; Massachusetts has no equivalent, for events or for SDIP points. The NSC retraining course you take after a three-event notice heads off that one suspension, and the events stay right where they were.

Parents of junior operators, note that a class will not shorten a teen's suspension either, and it must be served to the end even if the teen turns 18 first.

Checking your record

Buy your record from the RMV online with a MyMassGov login. October 2026 prices: $8 online for an unattested copy; $20 for a true and attested copy signed by the Registrar, which is mailed and mostly used for court; $20 by mail for a full certified history.

Pull it again each time a ticket is settled. Check that a win did not get recorded as an event, and that tickets from other states show the correct dates, because the date decides which window an event lands in.

Massachusetts defensive driving: common questions

Is there a point system in Massachusetts?

Not a single running number. Suspensions depend on how many surchargeable events you have, and SDIP insurers price each incident at 2 to 5 points.

How many events lead to a suspension?

Three inside 2 years bring a 90 day deadline for retraining. Seven inside 3 years bring a 60 day suspension. Three speeding tickets in any 12 months bring 30 days.

Can I take a class to lose points?

No class does that here. Events and SDIP points only fade as the years pass.

How long do surcharge points stay?

The SDIP considers six years, and the sixth adds no points. Clean in 3 can shave a point from each incident earlier.

Do tickets from other states count?

Yes. They are counted for the speeding, three-event, seven-event and habitual offender suspensions alike.

How do I get my driving record?

Buy it online from the RMV with a MyMassGov login: $8 unattested or $20 attested, at October 2026 prices.

Does finishing the retraining course clear my events?

No. It cancels the suspension threatened by the three-event notice, and the events themselves remain on file.
